Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes meet precisely where you'd expect: punching the same asshole in an alley behind a bar. Unfortunately, falling in love isn't as simple as recovering an old lady's purse.
“Is Bucky Barnes working tonight?” Steve asks the young woman checking IDs.
She looks him up and down, from boot to tight shirt to neat hair, and then sneers. “Why? Who the hell is asking?” She's got a faint French accent that adds a pretty lilt to her speech.
“I'm, uh, a friend,” Steve fumbles.
“Wrong lie, asshole. Bucky Barnes doesn't have any friends,” she says. “Get out.”

"I'm doing okay." He said finally.
"Lying through your teeth is what you're doing," Bucky knew he couldn't lie to Sam, but he insisted on trying for his own pride. "No one is doing okay, Buck, and that's alright." The snark his friend usually gave him was replaced with what Bucky believed sounded like genuine concern. Maybe Sam had gotten one too many dispatch calls about depressed, agoraphobic New Yorkers who were handling the new downtime and precariousness poorly.
"Not bad for the end of the world." Bucky sighed.
or, Bucky Barnes is anxious, agoraphobic, and living through COVID-19 in Brooklyn. The only thing keeping him sane is the skinny blonde Sam insisted would be the perfect socially distant companion.
(title from "Falling" by Harry Styles" - warning for lots of angst, self-deprecation, and Factime calls)
Just after 1am - a few hours after he posted today’s photo - he hears the tell-tale sound of a twitter message. Bucky grabs his phone, not checking who it’s from as he opens it because it’s probably one of his mutuals yelling at him as per usual. When he actually looks at his phone, though, it’s not Natasha
The ‘verified’ check stares back at him for a long moment before he can even bring himself to process the name on his screen. Steve Rogers is messaging him. Or, he reasons, a very good fake. The handle looks right though, not that Bucky knows. Not that Bucky has Captain’s America’s tweets set up as notifications, or that Bucky’s own display name is set to captain america’s bitch. Not at all.
Hey, the first message says. It’s Steve.
