Summary
Some of them kept their eyes downcast, fixed on the rough planks of the deck. Others peeked up warily at him and his crew, as if their peaceful attitude might shift in an instant. Other still glared openly at Sylvain, like their look might make him keel over where he stood.
One such pair of eyes was a beautiful amber, set in a slender face of creamy pale skin, stark in contrast to the long, inky blue-black hair that was gathered up in a loose knot at the top of the man’s head. He was, perhaps, just a couple years younger than Sylvain, in his early twenties. His thin pink lips were pressed into a hard line, all contempt and disdain. A pretty little thing.
And achingly familiar.
Of course, Sylvain knew when he gave the order to attack The Aegis that she was a Fraldarius ship. But he hadn’t expected to actually find a Fraldarius aboard. It had been years; Sylvain couldn’t have been more than ten the last time he saw the little Fraldarius boy, but there was no doubt in his mind that the whiny, crying child he’d known for a single summer in his youth was now the scowling man being held at sword point while Sylvain robbed his father’s ship.
Sylvain made a rash decision.

“There’s one more person you need to see,” Felix says, and Dimitri can feel a stone of disappointment settle into his stomach.
“Who is it?” He asks, trying not to sound quite too put out, wondering why Felix had sent the guards away.
Felix walks up the steps to the throne and then kneels at Dimitri’s feet. “Me,” he says, and Dimitri’s mouth goes dry.

But when Miklan left, it had been Sylvain who had come to him, eyes red as blood and rotten leaves, putting the everything he’d ever been and the nothing he’d ever become and the perfect, boring life that was planned out for him right into Felix’s icy hands and icier soul. Felix doesn’t truly understand why, even now, though he knows exactly what could drive someone like him to deal with devils and forego their own humanity; no, what he doesn’t understand is why choosing his cold, constant company instead of the comfortable warmth of loneliness and detachment, but perhaps there is nothing to understand, and Sylvain is just as unhinged as Felix is.
In any case, they make for a perfect team, the both of them; Felix knows what monsters look like, and Sylvain knows all the ways they like to hide. "
