Cute story about shy puppy love, growing (like an adolescent boy) a bit awkwardly, yet also completely naturally/inevitably, into something more confident, something warm (like the hearth of a home) and beautiful. Noteworthy for showing a relationship so shy that holding hands in public and having a first kiss takes 2 years of quiet dating...not many I’ve read are like that, but somehow I do feel that it is more true to such a story of childhood friends falling into place as teenagers.

If you ask Wei Wuxian about it, he will tell you that he first starts dating Lan Wangji the day of the fundraiser, after Lan Wangji had very grandly and very romantically kissed every single thought out of Wei Wuxian’s head, rendering his knees weak and his heart beating an inhumanly pace.

If you ask Lan Wangji the same question, Lan Wangji will say, a little too softly and a little too sadly, “Wei Ying and I are not dating.”

Hajime returned to him knowing nothing. Feeling, only. A bird that flies north.

I really loved the color gradient, black to blue, blue, blue. A story about convincing yourself that you're okay with giving up, that the despair you feel is certain, inevitable, that the dreams you had as a child were just that: stupid, naive, dreams, made when the monoliths of adulthood could not be seen standing in the way; and then looking up one day, at the inescapable, always-blue sky, and realize that no, there was really ever only one possibility, one helpless trajectory, one... north.

The way they grew apart was written so heartbreakingly --- "the number of miles they say they’re going to travel and then don’t, a whole column for the number of times he’s heard Oikawa’s voice cut away over the phone because he was laughing at something someone else had said. A record of the way Spanish has begun to sound in his mouth, more slanted, more sure." --- it becomes obvious that Iwaizumi's not "okay, with it", and instead feels that Oikawa has already found a place, happiness even, without him. When Iwa sees that "[Tooru] fears being replaced" and "not making it", it's glaringly evident that that's exactly what Iwa fears too, except about Oikawa instead of volleyball. When Iwa hangs up the call, he does not flee from his own longing; no he flees because he knows he lost Tooru once, and laying eyes upon "the towering scale of his own longing", knows that he can not bear to even see Tooru, 'knowing' as he does that fate will only rob him of Tooru once more. At first I didn't quite understand why Iwa was so angry and chose to do something that would hurt himself so much (wow, the analogy ``knowing the blood before it wells''), so I write this explanation for myself.

The writing is absolutely beautiful, and the motifs and metaphors and word choice are all so precise and precisely woven together that I think that this may very well be the artistic culmination of the special brand of growing-up/growing-apart angst and unbreakable, simultaneously childlike and yet almost primordial love that the IwaOi dynamic is known for.

Because misfortune come in threes, Iwaizumi Hajime starts his Thursday having a screaming fight with Shittykawa, spends his lunch break listening to the UCI women's volleyball team gossiping about how Ushijima Wakatoshi had gone public about his longtime love affair with Oikawa Tooru, and closes out the day by drunkenly dropping his phone into a sewer grate.

Although the reunion scene/resolution wasn't very satisfying to me, I still must nominate this fic for its stunning and virtuosic/acrobatic use of language (carefully engineered to be both incoherently bonkers and also poetically raw), and as one of the comments (pg. 9) puts it, the incredible "sense of place in this story" (in terms of the vibrant and apparently very true-to-life setting, and again very vibrant and apparently true-to-life personalities/chatter/experiences/yearnings). As for how I found this (the absence of tags is duly noted and cause for great mourning), user @lycheelaicha on IG has a IG story for "fic recs".
