    Summary

“Help me understand,” Kara says. “Are you saying everyone falls in love with their best friend?”

“I’m saying that queer women have a special affinity for it,” Lena repeats, fishing the cherry out of the bottom of her drink. “The whole ‘falling for your straight best friend’ is basically a rite of passage.”

    “Says who?”

“Everyone.” She puts the cherry in her mouth, bites it off the stem. “The L Word was like, built on the premise that a friend group of queer woman in LA dated each other in some sort of terrible repeating circle for, god, however many seasons that went on. And it’s been my experience that when two people are attracted to each other, and they’re close, feelings are likely to develop.”

“That’s just, I mean, come on.” Kara’s cheeks are a little pink. “A trope and a tv show? That’s your evidence?”

“So you’ve never been in love with your best friend?” Lena looks down at her empty glass.

“No!” Kara sounds affronted. “No, I have never been in love with my best friend.”

Or, A love story, told in three acts.

“Oh,” she said finally. “Sue! From middle school. Weren’t you in Boston?”
    “I moved back,” Sue said.
“Yeah, I heard about that, actually,” Emily replied. “I love your dog.”
“Thanks,” Sue said. “Are you — okay?”
“Oh, yeah, I’m fine,” Emily told her, though she looked at the same time like she was about two seconds from falling over.
    “Are you drunk?”
“Yeah,” Emily said, then, clearly sensing some judgement in Sue’s tone that wasn’t actually there: “What’s it to you? Free country, right?”
“Kind of,” Sue replied, “except you’re on my front lawn, so.”

Sue is perfectly fine being alone and not in a hurry to change that. Emily doesn't get the memo.

Lena doesn’t let herself think about how Kara won’t even be around to do it for her anymore in October. Lena will be at MIT, and Kara will be in New York at Pratt, and their lives will be going in completely opposite directions, probably to never meet up again.

Or, it’s 1995, Kara and Lena are headed off to different colleges in three months, Kara’s in denial about losing Lena like she’s lost everyone else, and Lena’s having an identity crisis, while also pretending not to be in love with her best friend. And, oh wait, Kara is, too.

    Summary

They stare at each other for a moment, time splintering in pieces around them; a masterpiece waiting to paint itself, a train waiting to wreck itself. Asami is the one who’s dead, but Korra doesn’t think she’s ever felt this cold in her life.

“Don’t,” she chokes out. “Don’t talk to me. Not like this. Not when you’re...”

Silence, for a moment. Silence and shadows and shaky breaths. It hurts to look at Asami, and it hurts to look away.

“It’s still me,” Asami says at last, her voice bent around a note of desperation, and Korra thinks: no, it’s not.

[Asami is dead and Korra knows it, but nothing is ever that simple.]
