Summary
There's a gene, rare enough to be all but unknown, hidden deep in the DNA of humanity. It emerges only when triggered by intense situations of danger and anger. In some places, places torn by warfare, by violence, these situations might happen often enough for some cultural knowledge of it. These cultures might call those in possession of this active gene various things - Úlfhéðnar, mengamuk, berserker, even rager; they are often regarded as myth by the wider world.
Being myths doesn't stop them from being real. Being in a world with no idea how to help them doesn't stop them from existing to be in need of help. The world doesn't know how to deal with them, and neither do they. In the absence of understanding, of comprehension or explanation, the possessors of the active gene are often labelled Problem Children.

She's five, when she finds the wolf cub in the woods, bleeding and crying, black fur wet and sticky with his blood, leaving red smears on her fingers when she picks him up. He trembles against her, and he's almost too heavy for her small arms to carry, but she does so, determined, cradling him close to her chest, careful.
Her mother's lip curls when she sees the creature. “Leave it to die, Clarke. Or better yet, put it out of its misery. That's one less beast in these woods.”
Clarke juts out her jaw and shakes her head, holding the cub a little closer. She's not going to leave him; she's going to save him.

She cherished her little brother, who was so weak; it was for his sake that she’d first turned to medicine, seeking a way to return to him to some type of balance after the events of his childhood, although she’d continued the work for her own sake, curiosity and fascination both. She’d excelled in it, brought honor to her clan with it, made her sect leader proud with it.
She was a doctor.
Her sect leader – saw her as a woman, instead.
“Meet your husband,” he announced grandly, and gestured at the mountain of a man behind him.
