The thing is, despite what others may think and believe and assume, Tony is unhappy.
He has a lovely husband, yes, who spends all of his waking hours at the office instead of at home with his family. He has two children who look at him like he can fix everything in their world, yet they feel Steve's absence more and more each day, and Tony doesn't know how to fix that. And then, Tony meets Natasha Romanoff, one of Steve's colleagues, and he starts to realise exactly why his husband prefers not to come home anymore.
Despite this, Tony loves Steve, loves him enough that he's willing to ignore any indiscretions, if it means that his family will stay together and whole.
But when Tony's first love, James, also known as the most terrifyingly competent mass murderer in the world, the Winter Soldier, shows up after almost a decade, asking for his help to fight a terrorist organisation that Tony knows all too well, suddenly, keeping his family together and whole isn't as easy as he thought it would be, when it was just him who had to suffer.
Now, he's torn between the man that left but came back to him and the man who loves him but maybe not enough.

Captain America hates him.
He was sort of expecting that, but to have the man staring down at him with unbelievable contempt, well, he’s not lying, it does sting.
One moment, he’s blasting Loki into a well-earned sense of modesty, and then, Steve Rogers is facing him with that condemning smile on his face, saying that “you’re all about style, aren’t you?”
To be fair, they’re both giving as good as they get, and then, Rogers is retorting that “I’ve known men worth ten of you with none of that”, and suddenly, time is freezing all around them.
Tony curls his fingers around his right wrist, his thumb settling over where the words are written over his pulse point: James Buchanan Barnes.
“Yeah, I know,” Tony says, quietly, and then, the entire laboratory is burning.
The hands of fate must have been having a laugh when they’ve finally fulfilled Tony’s wish. That or they were all pissed drunk with Loki because what other deity could have cursed Tony to such a fate: soulmate to none other than Captain America himself.
He truly wants to blame Loki for this awful luck.
So many people in the universe. Eight billion alone on Earth and yet none of them could have been Tony’s soulmate. Nope. It had to be Steve Rogers, who is already bonded to his dead best friend, James ‘Bucky’ Barnes.
Tony reached for the file opening it slowly, on top was a memorandum filled with dark black lines of redacted information. Clever hazel eyes widened as he skimmed through the text and the horrible truth became clearer.
“There were two?” he mumbled.
Fury hummed, “It would appear the history books got it wrong, Erksine used the serum twice….once on James Barnes, known as Captain America and the other, his best friend, a man named Steve Rogers.”
Tony leafed through the old papers, “How did we not know?”
Fury leaned forward than looking surprisingly pensive, "They scrapped the program, and Barnes was turned over to do bond drives with the war effort, while Rogers…he was sent to a secret facility.”
