Geralt has always been a little afraid of losing control. And after what happened the last time, it's not an unreasonable worry, one which the Council shares. He's been watched since he left Kaer Morhen, but he's always been... perfect. Kept himself in control, never done anything to create a reason to come after him.
And then he meets a girl. A girl with a grudge against a sorcerer, who asks him to give her her revenge. And he fucks it up worse than anything else in his life.
Julian has always told himself that he doesn't mind being a Witcher. It's not like he's got another choice, after all. But when the Council asks him to take down a half-feral fugitive, he starts to think that might not be true anymore.
- Part 1 of The End of All Things

“Jaskier,” Geralt starts, pleading. Julian scoffs. The stupid man really can’t take a hint, can he?
“Jaskier was nothing but a pipe dream, Geralt,” Julian reminds him coldly, even as Jaskier cries out at his words and tries to force his way back up his throat. But Jaskier is dead and can never return. Julian swallows him back, voice wavering only slightly. “And you need to wake up from him, as I have.”
(Or: Jaskier's glamour breaks after the terrible events on Niedamir's Mountain and Julian is forced to return to the Path. Everything should have been fine—Julian has spent nearly a century before being Jaskier as a witcher; he should be used to it—but then he ends up taking the same contract as Geralt and his Child Surprise and suddenly Julian isn't sure where he ends and Jaskier begins.)

By his understandably shoddy memory, Jaskier had died over 1300 times since he first drew breath several hundred years ago.
Somehow, none of those deaths ever seemed to hurt as much as the dreams of Geralt.
Or, the Old Guard AU no one asked for, but I wrote.

Jaskier knows two things:
1. He cares about Geralt.
2. He ran headlong into danger when Geralt's life was at risk.
But though the first statement tells him why the risk to Geralt mattered to him, it doesn't explain the course of action he took. And he would really like an answer.
Because he's alone now, and with injuries like these, well... Suffice to say, if Jaskier is to die for this one act, it would be nice to know why.
