Summary
Ever since he traded his grey Lieutenant’s shit for a white Captain’s shirt there has been a little more weight on him. A heaviness in his features that never really goes away. Sylvie thinks back to when he got the promotion, the tension of his personal life, the losses he had suffered, and she has the weirdest feeling that she should have done more to protect him then. She’s not sure how she could have, but it’s a little ache in her heart that she didn’t.
He has to be so many things to so many people, of course he can’t be more than a friend to her, he’s already used up. Sylvie feels an immense tenderness towards Matt in her heart, a sudden deeper understanding for everything that transpired between them. Reaching up she rubs her temples, the urge to cry, the gamut of emotions have all built behind her eyes to give Sylvie a pounding headache.

Time Stamp: directly following 9x03
After they eat messy deep dish in the living room, Matt has a stunning moment of clarity. It’s dark outside, the orange golden glow of a street light coming in through the large window. It’s caught up and broken by the lace of the curtain, then falls on Sylvie, lighting up her hair, her cheeks, her collar bones. It has given her an unearthly glow, angelic almost.
He loves her.
Loves her in a way that he has never loved an other person. He loves her unreservedly, and with the knowledge that with her his heart is safe, knows that damage would only come from it being a love unfulfilled; it’s silly really, he’s know it for a while.
He could have lost her, that day when the Ambo went over the guard rail. That knowledge makes his hands itch to reach for her, makes him want to wrap her in bubble wrap and keep her safe. But, the world is better with her in it. With her capable hands, her optimism, her love, her smile.
She wanted space, and the universe intervened. Matt’s not going to let this chance slip away.

•in the universe right next door•
She looks happy. No, happy is not the right word, or maybe it’s look that he disagrees with. She is glowing from within, her feature’s lit up with incandescent jubilation. Sylvie turns back and grins up at him, “what?” She asks, “did I smudge my lipstick?”
“I’m sure you’ve heard it a million times today, but you really are the most stunning bride.”
Her cheeks flush with colour. If possible it makes her more appealing.
“You have to say that, I’m standing here in front of you.”

Summary
On the sidewalk Matt risks it all. He reaches out and touches her elbow. Grainger still has his arm wrapped around her waist, but this, this one thing Matt can have. He would rather hug her. Kiss her. Tell her not to leave with Grainger.
Instead, he touches her elbow.
“See you on shift then.”
Sylvie nods. Belatedly offering him a half smile as she moves down the street, still with Grainger. Before the block ends, she turns a little, and calls back, “see you on shift.”

Summary
Groaning, Sylvie covers her face. “It’s because I accidentally overshared my messy personal life with Severide, and if I had gone to Vegas, we would have absolutely been dumb enough to get married.”
“I could see it.” Kidd says. “At the very least, the two of you are hot enough and dumb enough to get married in Vegas.”
Sylvie smacks her, leaning into Matt, wrapping her arm around his. “Take me away from these idiots. I’ve had too much champagne, and they’re trying to trick me.”

Summary
Sylvie asks if he wants to volunteer at the animal shelter with her one Saturday when they’re not on shift. Matt’s pretty sure the word ‘yes’ comes out of his mouth before she’s even finished with her question, much to his embarrassment. Sylvie’s face lights up, she smiles her signature sunshine smile, and Matt feels vaguely weak at the knees. He’s acting like a school boy with his first crush, but he can’t bring himself to care. Sylvie isn’t like anyone he’s ever met.
Or; Casey gets a new dog and it helps bring he and Sylvie together.
