Summary
Silence fell and Lan Wangji sank gracelessly to the floor. The array painted on the floor slowly faded from red to charred black. Wei Wuxian lay completely still in the center, bound tightly with strips of torn white robe; Lan Wangji wasn’t even sure if he was breathing.
He wanted to rush to Wei Wuxian, pull him into his arms, but he was so, so afraid. What if it didn’t work? It’s possible Lan Wangji had misread the first array. He was not as good with this sort of thing as Wei Wuxian. It was possible he had drawn it incorrectly or missed an important element. Or worse, what if it was about to work and Lan Wangji interfered prematurely and they had to begin the entire cruel endeavor all over again?
Wei Wuxian was put under a devastating curse. This is the aftermath.

Summary
Wei Wuxian had heard the story of course. It had made its rounds through his high school and followed him into his college days. He didn’t think there was any possibility it was true. Virginity was a social construct, invented by creepy old men to exercise dominance over women. The idea that a simple lack of sexual activity before the age of thirty could give one magical powers was absolutely ludicrous.
Wei Wuxian believed this until the morning of his thirtieth birthday.

“Why are we doing this anyway?” Kevin whined. “This is so dumb.”
Thea swatted his arm. “It’s not like you to back down from a challenge,” she said.
“For like sports or academics, both of which are noble pursuits,” Kevin protested. The camera zoomed in, showing an extreme closeup of a pimple on his chin.
“One,” Neil interrupted. The camera zoomed back out and swung over to Neil. “Last week, it was your idea to have a race to see who could eat a plate of spaghetti the fastest using only a spoon. Two, this might actually have practical application in the near future since you’re one of the straights and will probably wind up with a picket fence and 2.4 kids in the next five years. Three, are you scared?”

Summary
It had been a bad winter so far, the worst winter he had experienced up north. He had been tempted to stay warm inside his cabin for all five hours of daylight but he knew he needed to check his few traps before whatever he’d caught had frozen solid.
There was something big in his last trap. He squinted, hardly able to see its outline as the white blended into the falling snow. Usually, he wouldn’t catch anything bigger than an arctic fox. This was at least twice the size.
As he got closer, he realized he wasn’t seeing fur but feathers. There, lying on the ground, neck curled up against its wings, too exhausted to startle at his approach, was a swan.
