All he can hear are Roach's hoof-beats against dry, trodden earth, no soft twangs of lute strings or Jaskier’s incessant chatter. His back feels inexplicably exposed – on longer journeys with the bard, he’d offer Jaskier a ride out of pity (or kindness, possibly, though he would never admit it) and he’d lean against Geralt’s back as easy as anything, facing backwards so he could continue his newest composition all the while. Something stirs in his gut.

Eugene doesn’t know what he wants from Snafu. Closure, maybe, but the thought of saying goodbye is bitter, acidic, rising in his throat like vomit. He never wants to say goodbye, and he hopes that may be why Snafu never woke him on the train. If he can find him, he wants to hold him close, never lose him again.

Years after they stopped writing each other, Newt and Hermann run into each other on the steps of Cambridge University Library. Quite literally.
Newt stares at him, expecting more. He doesn’t get any. “Come on, man, who are you? Maybe I’ve read something.”
I doubt it, Hermann barely catches himself from saying. “Gottlieb. Hermann Gottlieb.”
And Newt looks like he’s struck oil. “Oh my god,” he says, and something flickers behind his eyes, like there’s more than just recognition there, and before he can wonder any more about what it is, Newt blurts, “Oh my god!” and Hermann flinches and makes a face like a disgruntled frog.
