Summary
Nikandros was trying to talk to him about practicalities, but here was no room in Damen’s mind for practicalities. There were only thoughts of Laurent and of Leon, and of getting them back and of killing the men who had taken them, and Nikandros’s questions were like pesky flies bothering a horse.

Summary
The ceremony was about twelve times more complicated than Damen thought necessary. In Akielos, men were married by making oaths to each other and clasping hands, and perhaps by inscribing each other’s names on themselves with a matching tattoo. Laurent had declined to be tattooed, and Damen decided Veretian weddings had been designed by cloth merchants, as they seemed to involve at least seven different excuses for changes of clothing.

Summary
“When you were young,” said Damen, “we lived near here. South a few miles, back closer to the construction. And we were planning a new capital in the center of both Vere and Akielos, to combine the administrative functions of both kingdoms into a single location.”
Leon had many questions but he wasn’t sure how many he was going to be allowed to ask. “By ‘we’ you mean you and me and Nikandros?”
Damen’s arm was still on his shoulder. Damen pulled Leon in closer to his side and squeezed him briefly. “Yes, you, me, Nikandros, and also the King of Vere.”
