Summary
An excerpt from A Guide to Shire Flora by Bilbo Baggins, collected by Frodo Baggins:
The Mile’s End is a rare flower found only in the four farthings of the Shire. While no one is certain when it was first recorded, it can be found in Hobbit art and embroidery patterns going back at least 500 years. The peculiar thing about mile’s ends is that they only bloom when in the presence of true love or rather, soul mates. In Hobbit culture, therefore, it is mainly used during wedding ceremonies. They are of particular importance to weddings between two brides or two grooms, for both relationship and flower are seen as precious and symbolic of Hobbit love for community and family in all forms.
Etymology: the name “mile’s end” is most likely derived from the Sindarin loth, meaning flower; mîl, meaning love; and henia, meaning understand. What originally was mîlothenia, became milothen and eventually milen. From there, Shire accent turned it into two separate Westron words: mile’s end.- Language:

Summary
Slow burn. Bilbo Baggins is a half-baked archaeologist who has put his dreams of adventure on hold to teach secondary school. Thorin is the grandson of a politically powerful figure in the historically rich and deeply isolationist country of Erebor. When he flees conflict and corruption in Erebor to settle in London, he finds his hands full with two young boys. Gandalf meddles, and Bilbo signs on as a personal tutor for the boys in hopes of getting a foot in the door to archaeological work in Erebor. He soon discovers that Thorin is a tough nut to crack. As Bilbo takes care of the boys he and Thorin grow closer, and secrets about not just the brooding stranger, but the mysterious country and politics of Erebor begin to unravel. It turns out that Bilbo isn't leaving adventure behind, after all.

Summary
One day Bilbo came across a cat with a thick black coat and white whiskers. Initially the animal lashed out at Bilbo, but once he had seen his mistake, the stray came and licked at the cuts in apology.
Bilbo took the cat home that night and named him Oak, after the tree the hobbit had found him under.

Summary
On his way back to the Blue Mountains from a meeting in Rivendell, Thorin is ambushed on the forest path.
His would-be attacker is not at all what he expected, however - instead a poor and hungry hobbit looking to steal his food.
Fortunately for Thorin, this hobbit makes a god damn awful thief.

Summary
Bilbo patted Gloin awkwardly on the back, once, and was glad when the dwarf let go. It had only been a fraction of the time Thorin had held him for on the Carrock, and he was glad for it. Somehow it had been different, and perhaps until now, until he had been hugged fast by another of their company, held as a friend expressing gratitude, Bilbo hadn’t quite realised how different.
The thought of their leader caused Bilbo’s gaze to drag across to where Thorin was standing, restrained firmly by two elves, and he was embarrassed to find those blue eyes fixed upon him quite unblinkingy. His expression was unreadable, as it always seemed to be, but there was something fierce in his gaze. Something barely contained. Hidden, but so close to the surface that Bilbo still got a sense of it. Like a shadow, or smoke reflected in glass.

Or: How might the events of Mirkwood unfolded if Bilbo hadn't had the ring?
