Summary
If Elias waits too long, he knows Jon will likely lose his nerve. For now, he is driven by the flare of stubborn rebellion that sent him here early in the first place—wanting to see Elias's face when Jon took such bold action—and the nervous anticipation that fuels it. The hope he does not acknowledge, that Elias will smile and reward his initiative. But it will not last forever.
And so Elias opens the door.

“I...” Jon hesitates, trying to corral his wandering thoughts long enough to say this right. “I like—giving. It's just complicated,” he settles on eventually, distracted by old memories. He can't quite form the words to explain the rest at the moment, but he meets Martin's eyes and licks his lips reflexively, and Martin sucks in a sharp breath.
“Oh,” Martin breathes. “... Cool.”
“Cool,” Jon echoes, fond and exasperated all at once.

Jon nods, and when Martin holds his hand over, Jon takes his cigarette back. It seems so simple and easy, in that moment. The two of them sharing space in this little pocket away from the rest of the world, passing the one shared cigarette back and forth and watching as it burns down to nothing.

“Come in, Martin,” he says, not looking up from his notes.
“Hi, Jon,” he says, and Jon stops writing at the sound of his voice. “We’re out of the green tea, but we’ve got lemon?”
Jon looks at him. Martin smiles at him in his usual tentative way as he sets the mug of tea down on Jon’s desk. Heat spikes so sharply in his gut that he twitches with it.
“Thank you, Martin,” he says, mouth dry, and he stands up.
“Oh,” he says, sounding almost surprised. He smiles again. “No-- no problem-- um, what are you--”
Jon takes Martin by the shoulders, leans up on the tips of his toes, and kisses him.
