“Are you hungry?” he asks, as Dodger runs back inside and attacks his bowl.
“Yeah,” Sebastian answers, with a lopsided grin and a dangerous flash of his eyes. “But. Later. After.”
After, said so nonchalantly, as if he doesn’t understand how much he can unzip Chris with just a word, or a look, or a raised eyebrow. Chris is such a fumbling idiot around him sometimes, because Sebastian’s charm is effortless. One crook of his finger and Chris would be stumbling after him like a newborn colt who hasn’t quite learned to walk yet. This time, Sebastian just looks at him, the promise of something in his eyes, and Chris goes over to him. Sebastian’s hands go onto his hips, low enough to dip fingertips underneath his waistband, and blinks up at him, angelic and demonic all at once, and this man is going to be either his forever or his demise. Chris is ruined for anyone else. Already, after two months.
“Has he imprinted on you yet?”
“What?”
“When we first became friends, he would always suggest I borrow his sweatshirts, or lend me soap or laundry detergent, or get me using the same shampoo as he did. I figured out after a while he liked when I smelled like him. He did it to Anthony, too, when we started getting serious, although that turned into more of him stealing Anthony’s clothes than the other way around.” Looking back up at Chris, she smiles too. “It’s a thing he does to people he loves. His way of claiming them.”
Chris swears. “I should make sure I packed those.”
“You did, sweetheart. I watched you do it.” Sebastian licks his lips and brushes Chris’s cheek. “But go check, if you need to.”
Chris blows out another breath, frustrated this time.
“Listen to me,” Sebastian says, kissing Chris on the lips before he continues. “Everybody has their shit. This is a thing that’s hard for you. That’s okay. Don’t make it worse by beating yourself up about it. If making sure you’ve got those sticks is gonna help you be a little less anxious, go do it.”

Sebastian’s beautiful because Sebastian’s always beautiful. But today Sebastian’s beautiful in a hopeless bruised uncomprehending sort of way, beautiful like the edge of despair or the glint of broken glass. His eyes are wide and desperate and not quite focused, and his skin is more pale than ever, and he moves as if even breathing hurts, as if being on his feet’s taking every last scrap of will but he can’t do anything else.
“Are you crazy, the fall’ll probably kill ya,” Sebastian quotes lazily. “Sometime. Perhaps.” No commitment. He can’t. Chris can’t.
The fall, that fall, the kind of fall involving hearts, that’ll probably kill them. Not cinema magic, either. Real bullets and real guns. And the knives in his jacket, in his boot.

Chris cries, “Mackie’s here!” and without letting go of Kat, manages to drag Anthony into their little vertical semi-consensual snuggle.
“Tellin’ everybody all about how much you love Seabass?” Anthony asks, and Chris nods against him.
He isn’t slurring, so he isn’t completely gone, just drunk enough to be extra happy and extra concerned that everyone in the vicinity is kept up to date with whatever thoughts are currently running half-formed in his chemical-soaked brain. Chris giggles. “You call him Seabass.”
“I certainly do,” Anthony agrees.
Kat is squished between them, and is taking no effort to free herself from the embrace but Anthony is halfway worried she’ll be crushed if Chris decides he isn’t hugging tight enough.
