    Summary

James’ memory was patchy these days — like a book with the pages disarranged — but he closed his eyes and the scene on Terror’s lower deck swam sluggishly to mind. Francis with his teeth bared, Francis leaning forward, Francis’ hands convulsing at the sound of each stinging stroke. Revelation came as light through morning cloud.

    “You enjoyed it,” he said.

    Summary

Francis will not deny that he thought it to be a very queer idea, when it first came to him. But, like all great ideas, this one was born out of necessity, and when the whiskey left him soft and dormant and Fitzjames’ needs were going unmet, Francis considered at once the possibility of a proxy; some strapping young lad to get in and get the job done.

    Summary

“Ah. Well. They’re saying,” says Irving, his voice dropping to a hoarse whisper, not meeting Tozer’s eyes, “that I, ah.” He swallows, starts again. “The men are saying… that I possess a… a member, of… unusual size…”

Tozer lets that delicious understatement hang in the air for just a moment before saying, “Do you, now?”

    “Yes. I mean— I—” Irving stammers, “I mean that’s what they’re saying. Not— I mean, I don’t—”
