Although the universe has been brought under Reinhard's heel, he lacks the one thing necessary for the continuation of his dynasty: an heir. As Reinhard grows weaker, the duty to produce one falls to his sister.
When all it would take is one person's refusal to send the whole of the Neue Reich crumbling into a new civil war, the burden of choice weighs heavily on everyone.
“Is that the only choice you feel you have?”
“The question of choice is a poor one. We all have responsibilities, and that sometimes means doing things willingly that we would not have chosen if we had been in different circumstances. Under those different circumstances, you might be asking my brother about marrying someone.”

When Oskar von Reuenthal enrolls at the Imperial Officers' Academy, he doesn’t expect to make real friends. The IOA is a competitive place, and Reuenthal has never been well liked. But when a foreign student shows up to challenge him for the top spot in the class, Reuenthal can’t look away.
“Why do you have such an interest in me? You’ve been staring at me since the day we arrived," Leigh said.
“So has everybody else.”
“You know what I mean.”
Reuenthal was afraid that he did. Or, not afraid precisely, but surprised to acknowledge that his thoughts about Leigh stretched back, in some form, to before, even, than the brief moment they had spoken in the hallway outside the practicum where they had faced each other. Reuenthal had seen Leigh at the convocation dinner, seen his head tilted back to the ceiling, seen his throat bared— vulnerable— and thought, “So, this is the number two.”
“Isn’t it only natural for me to have an interest in my direct competition?”
This is part one (ish?) of a very involved roleswap AU. You can read either this work, Speaking in Tongues, or Life out of Balance first.
Some elements of canon are respected. Some are not.

Three soldiers. Two bodies to be buried. One haunted house.
[Written for "A Momentary Ripple in the Stream" fanzine <3]
This story takes place immediately after the events of "Servants of the Pharaoh". You really have to read that one before this will make any sense at all.

After a year of self-imposed solitude, Magdalena decides it's time to pay Annerose a visit.
[spoilers up to e55 of the OVA]
“Is this really living, Annerose?” She tried not to sound dismissive. “I don’t know if I could bear it-- you’ve been locked up here like the princess in the tower for a year, just because…” She leaned forward, elbows on her knees. “I feel like, if people didn’t see me, I’d stop existing. Is that what you want?”
“I don’t feel that way,” Annerose replied. Her voice was firmer than it had been, which made Magdalena curious.
The hesitation was back, but Annerose looked over at her, and the earnesty in Magdalena’s posture seemed to bolster her. “For ten years-- I couldn’t let myself exist. I don’t think I knew who I was. It’s easier to be an empty shell. You understand, right?”
Softly. “I do.”
“Here, there’s nothing except me. I don’t need to be some object for anyone… For the Kaiser. A thing for people to look at.” She squeezed her eyes shut. “That’s all.”
“Can I say something?”
“I never thought you were an empty shell.”

spoilers up to e100.
Reinhard and Hilde go on their honeymoon, and are forced to confront the true nature of their relationship.
“Go on. Why is it different for you to be my wife?” Coming from someone else, the question could have felt flirtatious, but coming from him, it was direct-- a negotiation of power, if she wanted to negotiate such things.
Tentatively, as he leaned against her, she stroked his hair. When he made no objection, she let her fingers play with it, bright as gold and soft as silk. There were things about him that were beautiful, even if she had never thought it would be more than an abstract, arms-length type of beauty. Like paintings of goddesses in museums: larger than life, inhuman, divine objects of desire. Touching him was strange and unfamiliar, and she wondered if it would ever be less so, if she could get used to being married to him.

Reinhard von Müsel's mother learns that Annerose is to be sold to the Kaiser's court, so she takes her two children and flees to the FPA, arriving as penniless refugees beholden to the Alliance's charity.
A roleswap AU featuring slow burn romance, exciting space battles, court drama, treason, murder, intrigue, strategy, secret identities, heavy handed metaphor, and much, much more.
You do not need familiarity with Legend of the Galactic Heroes to read this story.

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
A series of canon compliant one shots, loosely connected by the central subject they orbit around; a different perspective on Reinhard.
You don't have to read these in order or all together / they're mostly grouped as a series to help people find them more easily. Order is chronological.
Updates whenever I feel the urge. Feel free to make requests but you'll only get follow through on my part if you manage to give me a brain worm.
These are "canon compliant" in a somewhat loose sense. I treat Reinhard/Kircheis and Reuenthal/Mittermeyer as "subtextually canon", ie implied heavily enough by the text that I can write them without contradicting the OVA in any way.
