Harrow could see through the open top the lurid, brightly-printed covers of cheap pulp magazines. CULT SECRETS: THE STRANGE REVENGE OF THE SCARLET BOUNTY HUNTERS! read the issue on the left. DOUBLE FEATURE TROUBLE! read the one on the right, THE HANDMAIDENS OF SUBTERRANEA! TERROR ON THE JOVIAN FRONTIER! It showed a malformed pterodactyl attacking a woman wearing what must have been a really large red sheet, set against the backdrop of a huge pile of jewels.
"Ugh," said Harrow, who had secretly been hoping the box contained a skeleton.
Or: Gideon Nav and Harrowhark Nonagesimus grow up together in the shadow of the Ninth House cult.

"How do you know Nonagesimus has gone somewhere dangerous?" asked Isaac. "Have you wired some kind of alert system?"
"It's, uh. It's on the schedule," said Gideon. "I just... forgot. Because of the bread."
Nobody was convinced by this, least of all Gideon.
"It's a Ninth House thing," Gideon went on, backing away with increasing desperation. This was a slightly more plausible explanation, if only because nobody wanted to look too closely at what fell under the awful skeletal-ribbed and rotting umbrella of Ninth House things. "Gotta go—!" And she was out the door, gone.
But it wasn't a Ninth House thing, except inasmuch as it was happening to the only two representatives of the noble and decrepit Ninth House on this quite literally godforsaken rock. Gideon knew Harrow had gone somewhere dangerous—knew that Harrow was back in the lab where they had only just completed a horrible trial—because she could see it, clear as day: an awful overlay on her vision of that terrible dangerous room and a pair of terrible dangerous hands drawing some kind of ward next to the plinth.
The hands were definitely Harrow's.
This was definitely a problem.

Summary
Harrowhark became very aware of Gideon next to her. Her bodyguard always seemed to appear out of nowhere the instant Harrowhark mused on her own lack of physical strength.
Gideon looked up from her tablet, almost as if she could read Harrow's mind. The stadium's bright lights seemed to bother her as much as its sound tormented Harrow. She'd since been wearing sunglasses throughout this entire interminable week. Gideon lifted them now to look at Harrow, and the gold of them stung far more than the lights.
"You look like you're about to pass out. Or die." Gideon said this cheerfully, as if nothing could be better.
