“Rerouting all power from life support to the engines,” Alex calls. Kara doesn’t even bother to protest. Rerouting power from life support is Alex’s favorite move.
It’s risky, but it pays off. They shoot forward and, by Alex’s count, four seconds before they’re back in weapons’ range, the wormhole opens in front of them.

Maggie swallows. “I showed you mine,” she says softly, and Alex hates how she sounds. How lost, how confused, how worried.
Alex has never, not once in over ten years, done anything but melt when she’s heard Maggie talk like that.
She pulls out her own badge, somehow remembering to click it over to display the best credentials for the day. “Secret Service,” she lies.
Maggie tilts her head, and Alex had almost, almost forgotten about the head tilt.
“How the hell did you become secret service?” she asks, her hands on her hips.
And Alex wants to say 'how the hell did you move to National City' and 'how the hell are you on my crime scene' and 'how dare you talk to me' and 'how are you feeling right now' and 'are you as fucked up right now as I am,' but she doesn’t.

Maggie peers into the crack, and it’s just as she thought. There’s a little girl there, not more than three years old. She’s Black, or maybe biracial. Her hair is puffed out in an adorable small little afro, contained at her hairline with a sweet red headband. She’s wearing orange shorts and a bright blue tshirt with rocket ships on it. Her shoes look like they might light up, but it’s hard to tell, because the kid is currently floating about a foot off the ground.
