It’s in the middle of scanning the last bottle of green tea that Itadori properly looks up. Eye contact with him is a physical, unexpected shock, a crunch of imaginary static snapping through Megumi and leaving his hands twitching at his sides.

"Hey." Itadori blinks, wide and earnest. "Do I know you from somewhere?"

The tea sloshes backwards in the bottle he’s holding. Megumi focuses on this until his vision steadies.

"No," he says. "I don’t think so."

In the aftermath, Itadori loses his memories instead of his life. Megumi grieves nonetheless.

If someone had asked Daichi yesterday how he planned to spend his Monday lunch period, he probably would have answered "eating my lunch" or "thinking about volleyball" or "eating my lunch while thinking about volleyball." He would not have answered "sneaking into the staff room to hack into my physics teacher's email so I can delete the embarrassing video my best friend accidentally submitted in place of our projectile motion assignment"—and yet somehow, to his profound horror, here he is, slandering the father of modern physics to his teacher's face as he stalls desperately for time.

“You must rest as well, and take treatment if you are injured. Stories can wait until the evening gathering. What does the child eat?”

Under his helmet, Din grimaces. “Got any live frogs?”

There is a pause, and then the first Mandalorian shakes their head, dragon-signet glinting in the low light. “We do not, but I have no doubt some of the young ones will have no objections to catching some. Are there any, uh, restrictions?”

Din grimaces again. “I haven’t noticed a preference for any particular species, as long as it’s live.”

“Well,” Dragon-signet replies after another awkward moment, “we must all love our children as they are.”

“It is the way,” Din says, echoed by several others, knowing it will be the end of the discussion.

    Summary

Bucky is so competent that it hurts my feelings is not a rational complaint to have about a person, and yet, after a year of being Captain America and partnering up with Bucky for the new and improved, post-Blip Avengers, that’s kinda how Sam’s feeling.

It’s not great. It maybe leads to Sam making some rash, ill-advised decisions like claiming he has a previously undisclosed superpower, and then getting caught in a web of lies when he ends up actually developing that surprisingly inconvenient superpower. Talking to birds had seemed like a harmless superpower, but it turns out that birds have a lot of opinions, and they don’t hesitate to tell Sam about them, especially when it comes to his supposedly subpar courting skills. Which is ridiculous, because Sam isn’t courting Bucky. Right?

What he wants most from Sawamura is not going to happen, he reminds himself. Even if everything else was aligned just right – which it isn’t - he still would never say anything, do anything, this close to Nationals. Would never risk even something small that might mess up their battery, or their team dynamics, or distract them and this is not something small by any stretch of the imagination.

He’s told himself that a million times, but he can’t stop thinking about bold hallway confessions and time slipping away from him, graduation looming ever closer.
