Agni has stood by as his children have used their gifts to burn the world, consumed with despair but reluctant to interfere. When the one who is meant to act as his intermediary in the mortal realm burns his own son in a shocking act of cruelty in front of a crowd who fail to step in, that is the final straw.
The Fire Nation descends into chaos at the sudden loss of Firebending, & the war becomes bloodier still, as the troops fight on out of sheer desperation, terrified that a reckoning is now due.

“How dare you think you can command me, in my throne room!” his father snarled down at him as the flames around the throne blazed higher. “You will tell me, or join your uncle in prison.” ]
Ozai wants to know why his brother chose to kill an Admiral with an exemplary military record. He does not like the answer he gets.

Iroh looks up and smiles at him, looking a bit teary.
“I think my nephew is a good and kind leader.”
Zuko sighs in relief.
“Do you think he’ll like it?” He asks softly.

Summary
It was kind of a wild ride between the Day of Black Sun and the end of the Hundred Year War. Sides were taken, battles were fought, firebending was lost and gained and taught and mastered. Team Avatar stood against the Fire Nation and won, and the world entered a new age of peace.
For Mai, it wasn't a roller coaster from battle to battle, but her experience of the last weeks of the war was no less complex and life-changing.
