He had broken up with Alice because — it almost didn’t bear going into. He had broken up with Alice because he never should have gotten back with Alice; because they were different people who wanted different things in a way that had been easier to ignore when they were grad students wrestling with the same coursework; because he came back from the dead and the person on the other side of the faultline in his life seemed suddenly very far away; because Alice was always saying things like “Q, have you thought about seeing a therapist?” and “I’m worried about you, Q,” and “Quentin, I really think you should be talking to a professional,” and Quentin was always saying things like “I need to go to sleep,” and “I’m gonna get another beer,” and “Not to be an asshole, but can you like get off my fucking dick?”

But also, he had broken up with Alice because he had a sex dream about Eliot Waugh.

(Or: Quentin blows up his life, hops into a car with Julia, and flees the state. It's not exactly the fresh start he'd hoped for.)

“Do you wear a lot of blue?” she asks. Cindy, her name tag says.

She hands Patrick a pair of dark gray wire-frame glasses which he slides on until they hook behind his ears. And it’s not like—well everyone who knows him knows he likes blue. But he feels a little unsettled that this stranger picks up on it, like at she can see his whole life contained within the frames around his eyes.

“Uh, yeah. I guess so,” Patrick says, taking them off again. This pair, like all the others she has given him, is exactly right and completely wrong.

Or, Patrick gets glasses and thinks about identity. David helps.

    Summary

Not even being a magician can rescue Eliot's Solsti-yule-mas, this year. After graduation, he'd leapt at the chance to apprentice with a world-famous magical architect, even if her office was in the Midwest; but now, with a major deadline looming, he can't take any time off for the holidays; and an approaching blizzard looks like it's about to ground his best friend at LaGuardia, two days before Christmas. The only bright spot? Eliot's boyfriend just beat the storm—and he brought Eliot a very cool present.

Then their holiday plans take a sideways turn when—not even 24 hours into Quentin's visit—Eliot's mother shows up at their front door.

Eliot's perfectly happy to see his mom—seriously, he really is, honestly—but their relationship has always been complicated, and the better part of a decade of radio silence hasn't exactly laid the groundwork for easy cohabitation in a studio apartment during the most stressful time of the year. As the storm hits, suffocating Chicago just when Eliot most needs an escape, it starts to seem like the only thing that can guide him through it may be a 100-year-old clock, made by a long-dead Coldwater, that just might turn out to be a little bit magic.

    Summary

Quentin Coldwater has always wanted to be a writer. And he is, more or less, though journalism was never supposed to be anything more than a way to support himself while he worked on his novel. When Margo asks him to take over writing for the The Coastal Review’s online column, The Heart Healer, he doesn’t feel like he can say no. It turns out though, that writing ‘from the heart’ is a hell of a lot harder than he anticipated, especially when his own heart feels more than a little bruised these days.

When a plane crashes off the coast of Virginia, killing everyone on board, Quentin unexpectedly finds a note written by one of the dead passengers to someone addressed only has “J”. There’s a story here that might save not only his job, but also his belief that writing can do something other than drain the life out of him. With the help of Eliot Waugh, his friend/coworker/maybe something more, Quentin begins his search for “J”, determined to deliver this final message while learning a little about grief, letting go, and finding the love that’s been in front of him this whole time.
