Summary
Anthony used to be an aerial performer, but he’s a yoga instructor now. It's a good job, really. Decent pay, flexible hours. He's doing just fine.
And yet, when his old friend (they also had a show together all those years ago, but really, do you have to bring that up?) Anathema tells him that a few of her graduating students are starting a circus company and are looking for someone to help them with their new show, he says yes. Mind you, he’s not going to perform — just help with choreographing the acts and making sure the concept for the show shines through.
Why not, Anthony rationalizes. Having a creative outlet with no strings attached would be good for him. Do a nice thing and help the kids out, scratch the circus itch (not that he has an itch to scratch, but if he had...), have some fun, and then get back to normal life when they don’t need him anymore. Sounds like a solid plan.
Turns out, however, that the group's aerial performer, Ezra, is absolutely not what Anthony expected him to be.

Poly-Am Party Week Fic!
Inside the saloon, he’s immediately aware that something is off. It’s as loud and chaotic as any bar he’s ever been in, with local men arguing over drinks or flirting with the resident working girls, but there’s also an obvious bubble of space that no one’s entering near one corner of the room.
A corner where John is sat, fiddling with something on his wrist and looking annoyed.
Arthur sighs and heads for the younger man.
“What’d ya do?” He asks, dropping to sit across from the man and swiping the remains of his beer.
OR
John's mind is just one big dirty minefield.

Summary
The first time he sees Abigail, she’s sitting perched on a bright red vinyl booth seat dressed in cut-off shorts that are so short he can see the curve of her ass cheeks and wearing a cropped pink tee that proudly proclaims SAVE A HORSE, RIDE A COWBOY.
She’s smiling, a bright open grin that lights up the room as she accepts a beer from a blushing waiter that John is immediately and overwhelmingly jealous of.
Sean, the bastard that’s dragged him along that evening, skips past him to sit in the booth behind her.
“Abi! My love, I brought you a present!”

Summary
Second epilogue added
Arthur Morgan followed his own advice and left the gang when he had a child (the canonical Eliza and Isaac), taking up as a bounty hunter. Along the way he picked up a young John Marston, who thus never runs with Dutch. Despite leaving, Arthur never truly left his connections behind him, and when Dutch asked for help, he always answered. In 1899, during the event of the game, this arrangement might eventually force Arthur to choose to whom he truly owes his loyalty.
John sneered. "You think I'd protect Dutch Van der Linde? Believe me, if I knew where he was, I'd tell you. Hell, I'd go get him myself. He's worth 10 large right now."
Milton sneered right back. "I am not a fool, Mister Marston, kindly do not treat me as one. You would do nothing without Arthur Morgan's say-so, and that will be what puts you on the gallows right beside him."

Second Chapter Added
[Canon-compliant pre-game backstory, set after John returns from his absence and exploring his reintegration into the gang.]
"It weren't like that," He shot back. "I wasn't leaving. I just needed to get my head on straight, that's all."
"Well did you?" Arthur asked, as he cracked his neck to the left, then the right. It was theater, a show for the gang around them. A signal that John Marston was going to get his, and Arthur Morgan was going to give it to him. "Because I gotta tell you, I'm about to knock it clean back off."

Summary
All this was to say—he was perfectly justified in sneaking out on his own to go robbing, and there was no way that he was worth enough to justify the team of three bounty hunters that descended on him.
This fic is a birthday gift for the lovely and talented oheart. Her request was, in brief "Arthur being reluctantly protective of John", so oheart, I really hope that I have gave you what you were looking for! xo.
