He’s done this before, counted their interactions, sometimes kisses, or touches, or how often they have sex. Even now, as he looks down at the gold encircling his fingers, with the assuredness of what they represent, he can’t stop that small bruised part of himself from wanting to quantify. He doesn’t like feeling this way, unsteady, questioning if what he’s found with Patrick is the forever thing he’s been promised. He knows, deep down, on the other side of the bruise, that it is. But he has to go poking at it every once in a while for reasons he just can’t seem to explain.

It had been a morning. A morning where they both woke up on the wrong side of the bed and somehow all the little quirks they’ve grown to love about the other turned into pinches and bruises and a pile of hurt feelings. Thinking back, he can’t even pinpoint the thing that set it all off, which is equally frustrating a huge relief. If he could remember, that would mean it was important.
But it wasn’t. It was just...life.

After the grant money he promised to get was delayed by an emergency bridge repair project, Patrick's done his best to help David with the store while still working at Ray’s, not giving him enough time to ascertain where David’s head might be, in terms of his feelings or interest or whatever in anything beyond the friendship they’ve built these many months. Sure, they banter, which Patrick hopes David is seeing as flirting, but David’s so quick witted with everyone that Patrick isn’t sure that what they have is special. It’s special to him, special in ways he’s still coming to grips with, but is it special to David?
