The first time Nawaki realizes something is wrong, he’s three years old and alone in the room in the attic of the orphanage.
That’s not my room, he thinks.
“Naruto, do you want to go to Ichiraku’s?” Hokage-jiji asks him when he visits him.
That’s not my name, he thinks.
Because he’s pretty sure his name is Senju Nawaki.
It takes him a while to understand what happened.
He died, he remembers one night, waking up screaming from a nightmare that shakes him to the bones because it’s not just a nightmare, it’s a memory, and he remembers running ahead of his team, seeing, too late, the wire as he trips it, and then fire, sound and pain, so much pain, and it hurts and it hurts so much and then…

Summary
This is the specially bred Denden that connects him with Shanks without anyone being able to overhear their conversation, the special bred of Denden that Mohji and Rockstar had perfected over the years to allow the two of them to stay in contact no matter what, and it's ringing but it's not Shanks' face forming on the snails'd body, it's Benn's and that's only happened once before, when Shanks lost his arm, and Buggy grabs the Denden with barely a nod at his left hand, and rushes into his cabin, closing the door behind him as he takes the call, rummaging through the drawers of his desk.
"Benn, what's going on?" He asks as he grabs a small box out of the drawer. "Is Shanks-"
"Captain Buggy," Benn's voice is hoarse and wet, like he's been screaming and crying recently, and no no no please please Davy Jones and the Sea please don't let this be- "Captain has been captured by the Marines."

Shanks is drunk. Drunk enough that the world spins a little bit, drunk enough that he stops paying too much attention to his surroundings, drunk enough that all he cares about is getting drunker.

Drunk enough that he doesn't notice the small figure until it drops from the trees right next to him, and it's not a full moon but it's not a new moon either, it's something in between where he can see a bit but not quite clearly, and his head hurts and his sight is foggy, and he blinks, multiple times, tries to make out the shape that just dropped next to him and-
Legs apart, solid on the ground, unshakeable, back straight, head held high and wild curls flying every which way, a long weapon held in hand, ready to be unleashed on whoever incurred the figure's wrath, and the size is wrong and the shape is too different, too small, but for a moment all Shanks can think is familiar even as it feels like the breath just got punched out of him, and he can't help the longing that grips him in that moment.

Summary
“D.... dad is coming back?” A small voice pipes up from the open door to their right, where Buggy’s Observation had already tracked the child and his mother’s faint presence.
Buggy’s first impression of Usopp is that he looks exactly like his father, but with darker hair and a longer nose. Otherwise? That boy definitely takes after his father. That might also be due to the sickly pallor of the woman resting on the bed, making it hard to find similarities between her and her son beyond their shared long nose and hair colour.
“There’s nothing and no one that can stand between Yasopp and his family if you’re in danger,” Buggy tells the boy as he crouches down in front of him, letting Loyal slip into the room and start examining the unconscious woman. “He and a couple of his nakama sailed off from the Red Force last night. They’ll be here before the end of the week if the winds hold.”

Summary
Buggy only meant to check up on Banchina and Usopp as a favour for Shanks. After making sure she would be alright and having his doctor treat her, he decides to stop by and check out that kid Shanks sacrificed his arm for.
Only, the kid doesn’t live in the village anymore? What do you mean mountain bandits? Oh hi Dadan long time no see - what do you mean Monkey D. Garp gave you TWO kids to keep an eye on? And why does that kid look like a mini Blackjack D. Rouge crossed with Captain?! And hating his own existence? Yeah no that won’t do.
Also he’s out of his league, so much it’s not even funny. So he calls Banchina, because she’s doing a great job with Usopp so she has to know how to raise kids, right?
Turns out, there's a surprising number of pirates' kids and wannabe pirate kids out there in need of comptent adults to take care of them or prepare them for their dreams.
(And a surprising number of parental figures I CAN and WILL unfridge with Buggy's help, so watch me Goda)
