The fur on Catra’s spine stood up and she furrowed her brow. “Yeah, I know, okay? No need to rub it in,” she grumbled. She sipped her tea and turned her gaze toward the wall.
“But do you think the trees are scared of you? Angry at you? The Woods have been around far longer than even Madame Razz. The scars of this war that you and Adora fought are not the first, and they will not be the last.” Razz sipped her own tea, then breathed a deep sigh. “I must have taught you this lesson a thousand times already, dearie. Magic does not hold petty grudges! Magic is simply there, waiting for you to decide how to treat it. Will you try to destroy it? Control it? Or will you let it into your heart?”

Perfuma looks back out into the Whispering Woods, weighing what she’s about to say. She takes a deep, centering breath. “Adora… I want to tell you a story.” She looks back into silver eyes, reflecting the light of the still-novel stars overhead. “Do you know what I was before I was a princess?”
“Before?” Adora puzzles.
Perfuma hesitates, but keeps on. “Well… I used to be a prince.”

He stops abruptly, catching his own words with a grimace. Adora has gone tense, her hand frozen where it rests on the bulbous end of a spindle. Catra, still down the hall with studied disinterest, has gone even tenser.

“Yeah, well, we didn’t qualify for any scholarships, so that’s out of the question,” Catra starts off, bitter. “We don’t have any disabilities that are medically certifiable, nor are we related to anyone who does. We’re not related to anyone at all, really, but that doesn’t seem to matter.”
“It sucks,” Adora agrees offhandedly, blood rushing in her ears. “Go on.”
“I don’t know. Parents? I’ve kinda just skimmed the rest of the page. All the focus on family was annoying.”
Adora shrugs, trying to look and sound nonchalant. “Married couples, too.”
