    Summary

Half-Elf historian, Tolerantia Marcosdottir-Sabelle wants to write a more personal account of the Dark War that changed the world irrevocably all those decades ago. Everyone’s read the Sage of Silvergrove’s dramatic account of the war, and scholars, human and elven, debate endlessly on who truly deserved the credit for ending the threat of Aaravos. But Tol wants to peek behind the veil. She wants to know how much of Sage Callum’s marriage to the High Dragonguard Rayla was political, or if the legendary romance was exactly as it was retold. She wants to know whether King Ezran really commanded the august dragons to serve as the mounts for his knights. She wants to know if the final duel between the Forces of the Dove and the Dark Army was really as mythic as the records claimed. With a satchel full of moon opals, and a spellbook with just one spell, Tol sets out to scry the past for the answers to her questions.

Wei Wuxian laughs, loud and bright against the silence of the gray sky. “Ah, Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan. I love you so, so much, you know that?”

Lan Zhan’s lips part slightly in surprise. His ears, already pink from the winter frost, darken to the color of the sunset—that lovely, lovely red that happens when the sun bleeds into the horizon. Wei Wuxian giggles into his sleeve at the sight, his breath curling around him wispily.

“Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan says, voice sounding oddly strangled. It’s amazing, how even after so long, Lan Zhan is left breathless from a simple ‘I love you’.

“That’s me,” Wei Wuxian says, tacking on a wink and his trademark grin at the end. “Your dear, dear Wei Ying!”

Lan Zhan’s eyes crinkle at the corners and his lips twitch the slightest bit, and despite the cold biting at him, Wei Wuxian’s chest just positively floods with warmth. “Mm. My dear Wei Ying.”

Blood rushes into his cheeks as Wei Wuxian buries his face in his hands and crouches low to the ground, all confidence absolutely gone. “Ah, Lan Zhan, Lan-er-gege, Hanguang-Jun! You can’t say such things with such a face! You’ll be the death of me like this!”

Wei Wuxian hears the crunch of snow under heavy boots, and then Lan Zhan is kneeling before him, gently grasping his hands in his own, and pulling them away from Wei Wuxian’s (most likely) red face.

“Wei Ying won’t die,” Lan Zhan says. “Not ever.”

Wei Wuxian chuckles. “I know you won’t, Lan Zhan. You have everything to say about it, and since you do, you’re obviously going to make sure I stay as safe as possible, won’t you?”

    Lan Zhan nods. “Mm.”

“Does that mean you won’t let me go on night-hunts with A-Yuan and A-Ling?”

    “If necessary.”

    “Lan Zhan!”

(They both know they don’t mean that. It’s never about protecting one or the other, not anymore. It’s about protecting what they are now, from the world they walk to the legacy they’ll leave behind. From the junior disciples who aspire after them to the nights spent grading papers and composing new songs.
