“Small coffee, black.”
These are the three simple words that had been scribbled in blue across Darcy’s left wrist for twenty-six years, in the cramped capital-letter handwriting of the person that she had been not-so-patiently waiting to meet for just as long.
In hindsight, it may have been either the best or worst idea to take a job where she heard her own words a dozen times on a daily basis.

“Do you still need a job?” Natasha asked Darcy over the phone. Darcy was sitting in her apartment, answering Jane’s emails.
“Yup,” Darcy said, pushing up her glasses.
“This would be an unusual arrangement,” Nat said slowly. “One of my colleagues was recently dumped.”
“Yeah?” Darcy tilted her head to hold the phone awkwardly.
“His ex and her new fiancé work for SHIELD. He wants someone to make appearances with him in public, make him seem happy and over it.”
“A fake girlfriend?” Darcy said, slightly stunned.
“Fiancée, I think,” Nat said. "He's very competitive."

“Somebody snuck a dog into the building the other day,” Darcy said. “I want to find the dog so I can pet it---what’s wrong?” she asked. Cam had gone a little pale.
“What night?” he said.
“Umm, Wednesday?” Darcy said. “Sort of Labrador-sized, dark? Could we find him on the security footage?”
“I’m sorry, but uh, I really can’t help you,” Cam said, looking, well, odd. “New rules about the system feeds.”
“Okay,” Darcy said. She thought he’d walk away, but Cam actually leaned in.
“Darce, if you see a big, dark dog in this building that looks like a--a sled dog, do not approach, okay?” he said, eyes wide and serious. “I really mean it.”
“O-okay,” Darcy said, more slowly. “Gotcha.” She nodded. Cam looked relieved.

“You think you could keep your little family hidden from SHIELD? From me?” Fury said.
“What the hell are you talking about?” Rumlow said. He laughed openly now. He had no idea what Fury knew. Fury leaned forward and smiled.
“She put your name on the birth certificate,” Fury said, sliding the phone out of his pocket and flicking through to a photo. He held it up. “That close enough? The doctors said your vision’s damaged from all the debris.”
Brock blinked, trying to make sure he was seeing the image correctly. On the screen, Darcy Lewis was carrying a tiny, dark-haired infant. He stared at the image for a long moment. Closed his eyes. Refocused. “You want the bases?” Rumlow said quietly.
“All of them,” Fury said, tucking the phone away. Rumlow’s eyes followed it to his pocket.
