“You did not leave me?” Nicolo said.
“What?” Yusuf’s head snapped up, taking a good look at Nicolo for the first time this morning. Whatever he saw made him rush over.
“Nicolo, what’s wrong?” he said. “You’re crying. Why would you think such a thing?”
“You said—” Nicolo started and every word was like gravel. He would suffer a thousand more deaths before he wished more of this pain upon himself. “You said we would part when we came to the sea.”
He waved a hand at the open balcony and the seagulls beyond, the glittering pearl that was the Mediterranean, how it would carry him to the festering forested heartbreak of Europe in a matter of a few short weeks.
“There it is.”

Summary
All of this scared me. Yusuf scared me. He scared me with his easy repudiation of my beliefs, his laughter, the way he looked at me, the things he made me think. My belief in God scared me too, standing as it did on shaking legs. I had suffered for Him and suffering should have proven my love, but it never made anything better. But who was I, if I was not a God-fearing man? What would I become?
If you will not die, why continue to suffer?

The plan goes thusly: he will find the busiest inn in all of Cairo, and he will ask for a room, and when they inevitably only have one bed to spare, he will shrug and say it can’t be helped, and then he will have Nicolò all to himself, within four safe walls. He will say, “Nicolò, you are the stars that light up my night sky,” or perhaps, “Nicolò, finding you has been like finding safe haven to one lost at sea”, and most crucially, “Nicolò, may I please kiss you?”
The plan does not work.
