    Summary

Athos had often been accused of not feeling. The placid face, the wry curl of the lip, the mustache and beard carefully crafted to disguise reaction all contributed to the effect. Leaning against a wall, or any available surface, really, gave off an air of nonchalance. To those that did not know him, he seemed untouchable, far above the common man. Those that knew him, knew differently, but those were few. Aramis and Porthos, d’Artagnan and Treville could, to a varying degree, see beyond the surface, knew him well enough to interpret signs others missed. Athos had worked hard, nearly all his life, to erase those signs, but he was only a man and men feel. Despite his father’s assurances to the contrary, Athos had been cursed with a depth of feeling beyond most men. His father did his best to cure such a curse.

    Summary

Athos was stunned when his eyes drifted down to the corner clock on his laptop. It was 3:45, on a Friday, and he didn’t know. Typically on a Friday, he would have been interrupted all afternoon. Porthos and d’Artagnan would have reminded him every time they saw him that it was indeed Friday. But the most unhelpful would be Aramis. He would stop by every so often, a note of celebration ringing in his voice, encouraging Athos to join them after work in this or that club. Then there would be the emails, arriving in bunches, detailing the plans, where they were going, what they would be doing (which inevitably boiled down to Athos nursing a bottle of wine while the others bounced around being social). About every forty-five minutes, another email bunch would arrive, inevitably changing whatever plans Aramis had laid out previously, so that Athos was never really concerned until about 4 pm. But today, no impromptu visits, no constant dinging email alerts, no Aramis.

    Something was wrong.

    Summary

By mid-December, the whirl of holiday parties was growing cumbersome for Athos. Had he been a guest at the many soirees, well, if he were honest, he wouldn’t have attended as a guest. Protecting the king and queen amongst nearly all the nobility of France, its allies, and its neighbors was wearing thin. All of the guests had agendas of a sort: some to catch the eye of the monarch, some to advance their own financial gain, and all for some type of personal gain. It fell to Athos to distinguish the merely annoying from the truly malicious. As such, he hovered on the outskirts, always near the king, alert for unwanted advances. It was exhausting.

    Summary

Porthos opened his door on Christmas morning to find a colorful package placed on the threshold. Instead of continuing on his way to the garrison, he brought the package in to his table, and respectfully, slowly, undid the knot of string holding it together.

    Summary

Louis (and Anne, really) hosted an annual ice skating festival. Children, both of the nobility and the poorer streets of Paris, would gather at the frozen pond in the palace gardens for a morning of gliding across the ice. Afterwards, there was a luncheon in the solarium before the urchins were sent home. The adult nobility took their turn in the afternoon, making the experience much like a ball, only with blades. The king and queen remained present throughout the day, requiring, of course, their personal guards.
