Tony Stark knew more about the name Loki than most mortals long before Asgard banished Thor down to earth for a while, but then again, most mortals aren’t the blessed of Fenrir, also known as wolf’s-kin, or werewolves.
Tony was relieved, honestly, when it turned out palladium exposure at high doses fully suppressed all signs of his more inhuman heritage. Except when there were problems. In this case, Loki might be the problem to ruin his long no-shifting streak entirely.

What if Tony decided in Siberia that he couldn't just go home? He was used to being the scapegoat, but this time the cost would be more than he could pay.
Ross would have the ammunition he needed to get Iron Man under his control, and what he'd do with the tech didn't bear thinking about.
Tony decided to use Protocol Pass The Torch. He'd be fine. A penniless fugitive's life would make a nice change of pace. Everything would be peachy keen.
(Tony miscalculated the pull the world had on him. He also miscalculated how many people would join him. Ultimately, Thanos underestimated him.)

Tony Stark was tired. But he had a planet to protect, even if everyone laughed at him whenever the prospect of alien invasions was brought up. He could count on one hand how many people he could trust, which was disheartening but then, what else was new?
