"It exactly sort of thing we known for thirty years ago. Me refuse--” Verity look up at that, because Cookie still have script approval, but they all know Verity hold purse strings. Cookie say it again for good measure. “Me refuse to do one more story where it shocking twist ending that monster not eat people."

Randy Johnson (photographer; member, Baseball Hall of Fame): Rob Manfred found me somehow. I don’t know how. I thought, 20 years ago, it had been enough. I was in my backyard taking some photos of birds and Rob stood on my deck and said, “Randy, you have to help us out with a project,” and I said, “I will only help you if it’s a photography project, Rob, I am retired now, you can go to my website to look at my photos,” and Rob said, “if you didn’t want to help us, you shouldn’t have given up that goddamn moonshot to McGwire.”

    Summary

Grandmother ruled Gir Niajra, and always had.

Jummai felt certain this was so, mostly because it was impossible to imagine otherwise: anyone, anyone at all, seated so comfortably on that great golden throne except Grandmother? Anyone who could look or speak with such authority, to whom so many great and worthy people bowed down? No—only Grandmother. It had always been Grandmother, and it always would be.

Then Grandmother died; and there was a war.

(Or: Jummai is a princess without a throne—but she has no intention of leaving to others what is rightfully hers. She needs a wife with an army, and gets one; but her wife seems impervious to her tactical charm, she keeps making mistakes, and her cousin still wants her dead.)

“Just to be clear,” Andrew says. “You want me to pretend to be your boyfriend at a party to spite your high school bully and your high school girlfriend and possibly the entire state of Ohio?”

Steven giggles. “Spite’s such a harsh word. Shock and impress, maybe.”

“For a man of faith you’re being awfully morally flexible about this,” Andrew says.
