“Was it terrible?” Bucky asks. He’s sloppily eating some kind of Brazilian black bean stew, dribbles of it sliding down his chin. Steve is charmed despite himself, but he passes him a napkin anyway while he considers the question.
“No,” he admits at last, and he must sound more reluctant than he meant because Bucky slants a look at him. He laughs, pushing at Bucky’s metal arm, which is halfway around his back anyway and making it hard to eat. “No, it really wasn’t. Nat and Tony spoke, said some good stuff. There was a priest,” Bucky snorts, “shuddup, he read some nice Psalms but it wasn’t full-on Catholic.”
“Good,” Bucky says, leaning in to kiss Steve on the mouth.

It was a good book, while Derek could focus on it. “He doesn’t talk to me much anymore, but Allison and Scott both say that he’s all right. He’s sleeping more, at least.” Derek hears the wind coming through the leaves of the nemeton, the only tree in the woods that’s not bare, and a moment later Derek feels it on his face. He likes to think it’s in response to him, but he doesn’t know if he can afford to be that optimistic yet.

“You can go, you know,” Sam says, one day out of the blue, when they’re perched on the hood of the Impala, gazing at the night sky.
Dean shifts a bit, takes an absentminded sip of beer but keeps his eyes on the heavens, on the star that each night seems to get a little bit bluer, a little bit brighter the more that Dean watches it.
“Go where?” Dean says, and Sam’s next words are careful, spoken so softly that Dean can barely hear them.
“I know you miss him, Dean,” Sam says and his voice is gentle. “You don’t have to stay for me.”
It’s been years.

“Y’all are sweet,” she says, and nods to indicate him and Cas. “Is he your—are you all together?”
Dean’s still contemplating how to answer this without saying something offensive—he never has figured out a polite way to say “no homo”—when Cas answers for him. Cas doesn’t even look up from his plate, his mouth full of baklava and some stray flakes of phyllo dough sticking to his lips when he says, “Yes.”
Dean feels more than sees Sam go very still across the table, forkful of salad and grilled chicken poised in midair.
