“Tell me,” Lan Zhan hums, hands on her thighs. The laugh in her voice feels suddenly cold, mocking. Wei Ying jerks away.
“It’s not funny,” she mutters, sliding back a little; she misses Lan Zhan’s warmth but doesn’t think she’s ever wanted to be touched less, stomach churning in humiliation.
“Wei Ying?” Lan Zhan sits up, alarmed. The lust and humor is gone from her voice; Wei Ying is very suddenly ashamed of that, too.

"Are you alright?" Jiang Cheng asks. "What happened?"
"Jiujiu!" Jin Ling says, his voice panicked. "Jiujiu, it's Wei Wuxian! He's hurt!"
Jiang Cheng freezes.
Wei Wuxian gets hurt on a night hunt. Jiang Cheng is displeased to find out that he's been wandering around on his own instead of living with Lan Wangji in Cloud Recesses. He ends up fixing it.

“It’s okay that you miss him,” said Lan Wangji, a familiar litany to them both by now. “Do you feel sad?”
“I feel sad,” A-Yuan repeated, shoulders hitching with tiny hiccuping sniffs. “When is he coming back?”
“I don’t know. I am not sure where he is.”
But this seemed to frustrate A-Yuan. “Xian-gege! I miss him! Please, baba?” He looked up at him with wet cheeks and a wide, quivering frown. “Please baba can you ask him? I really miss him!” He sobbed again, heartbreakingly.
It stabbed straight through him, cracking open the reservoir of loss and helplessness that was all his own. His child’s grief did that, sometimes. It always took him by surprise. He caught his breath sharply and gathered A-Yuan into his arms, holding him tight until the pain ebbed.
“I will try,” he said softly into A-Yuan’s hair, when he could speak again. He never made uncertain promises and tried not even to raise uncertain hopes, but his son was hurting. His son believed he could make it better. He couldn’t not try.
Wen Qing might at least know who this “Xian-gege” was. He would text her in the morning. It would be a start.

But alas, the spot next to the Crown Prince continued to remain empty a decade later.
Exultant praises of the Crown Prince's beauty soon morphed into muttered scepticism. Maybe... there’s something wrong with the Crown Prince? Is he ugly? Disfigured? Unlovable? Or maybe, the challenges were truly too difficult.
The day of summer solstice, a mysterious figure appears. "My name is Crimson Rain Sought Flower," the masked man announces, "and I'm here to ask for the Crown Prince's hand in marriage."
