Work Text:

Izuku remembered a time before humanity. A time when the world was different and the land rules by creatures lost to time. He remembered when he huddled in the forest, crying out when his leaves were ripped from him. He remembered that time through a mist, for he was far too old to remember it perfectly. He had survived when other died, growing strong off of the dead around him. He wasn’t sure how long ago that was, but he remembered. He would always remember.

Izuku watched as humans rose, creating places to live. Then they were carving the very earth, taming it to their desires. He watched as they crept closer to where he stood. He remembered creatures now long dead. He remembers them and feels that these humans are far more dangerous. As he watches the forest around him fall, he is ever more certain.

Izuku woke to fire. The forest ragged as it had not since before humanity, when giant insects ruled. He looked around as the fire twisted closer. He had survived for melania, he would not burn . His roots shifted, branches stretched, and trunk thickened. A press of something innate and he was safe. He watched, detached, as the forest burned. When the last spark faded, he was alone once more. Rain fell, soaking the ash covered ground.

He wasn’t sure when, but the forest had started to grow back. Trees reached for the sun, flowers bloomed, and animals roamed. He was mildly surprised to see a clearing in front of him. Flowers grew in abundance and animals grazed in peace. He was curious at this emptiness. Stretching his roots he slowly cover the entire plot of land. There were no tree seedlings. How odd. His curiosity satisfied, he fell back into sleep.

He woke to smoke. Smoke but no fire. No. There were humans in the flower clearing. Looking closer he saw that an area had been cleared, and the fire placed in it. How curious. Three humans sat around the fire. A woman, man, and girl child. They wore ragged clothes, ripped and torn. Blood seeped from the man, and water fell from the woman. The girl child did nothing. As he watched the woman started to talk. He had never heard the humans speak. There was something in her voice though, something that spoke of age . Something old. The blood stopped flowing from the man and skin mended. Now, that was interesting. He watched them for as long as they stayed, and when they left he mourned. She had used something old . Something he knew intimately. How had humanity found it? Perhaps it would always be a mystery.

A short time later shouts and slashing and burning woke him. Confusion lasted until a woman child ran into the clearing. Panting she looked around, eyes like a cornered rabbit. Blood dripped down her forehead, a low keening slipping past her lips. From the edge of the clearing opposite of him, men emerged. They seemed to be covered in starlight, tamed fire leaping from sticks. The woman child turned, backing away and toward him. As she moved closer, he remembered. He remembered a bleeding man, a girl child, and a woman who could use something old . This was not the woman, but the girl child grown. As he watched she threw her arms up and out, and old/age/forgotten came. It flowed through her easier then it had her mother. Her pursuers were flung as the forest reacted to her innate plea. A flash of something and the woman child collapsed. A stick with feathers bloomed from her chest. Blood bubbled past her lips and Izuku felt old mourn. He had never felt the old mourn before. He watched as a man stalked toward the child laying at the base of his tree. The old was mourning, and he would not allow it! Pushing every bit of the old forgotten from his trunk he formed himself in the likes of man. He stood above the woman child, eyes glowing green , and the forest raged .

Izuku has not been able to save the woman child. Not truly at least. Under his branches, at the base of his tree grew another. The woman child, with her during breath, said her name and her wish to live. He had asked, would you live with me for all eternity? Yes, she replied, tears and blood mixing in the dirt. And what should I call you? He had asked. She smiled and said, Ibara.
