The tornado of fire swirled tightly around them. It was so much more powerful than they had anticipated, but it was the only thing that either could think of that would take down the powerful ‘villain.’ For a second, they both actually believed they had defeated the large alpha with their combined quirks.
“A prison made of fire and wind. A nice idea.” Gang Orca praised. “If I were an average villain, I might give up, or cry. Or maybe beg for your forgiveness.” He paused before he reached on his suit jacket pocket to retrieve one of the few water bottles he kept inside. “However, what if that wasn’t the case?” Gang Orca smirked before he opened the bottle and poured the content on his head. Their eyes widened in disbelief when they watched the tightening of his skin instantly ease. “The moment you attacked me, I had already worked out my next move!”
Todoroki bit his tongue in annoyance while Inasa gritted his teeth to stop himself from shouting in frustration. Even when using their strongest quirk move, both felt a dreading feeling in their heart, knowing that whatever they did to subdue the villain had failed.
Gang Orca gave an earth-shattering scream while using his sonic waves to shoot the water now stored on his skin to extinguish the raging inferno around them. The vibrations helped neutralize the tornado prison they’d built.
The whiff of scent Shouto smelled at the beginning of their battle suddenly amplified to the point of choking him. The combination of arctic saltwater and iron filled his nose and lungs in such a way that he felt his body scream to submit to the naturally stronger ‘villain.’
“Well?” He taunted. “What do you have planned next?” Gang Orca said to make the simulation as real as possible. Since he wasn’t one to do things half-assed, his taunting added more layer to his performance. Though, as he watched Shouto struggling with himself to gain back his control instead of untangling himself from the restraints that bounded him, he had to admit that letting his scent out at full force might not have been the best idea. The alpha boy, however, was giving out his own scent to retaliate. He wasn’t sure how the smell of high mountain winds was supposed to be intimidating, but he assumed to some lesser alpha and beta it would be.
‘Nothing damn it!’ Todoroki shouted in his head as he braced for the ‘villain’s’ next attack. It took everything in Shouto to struggle in keeping his instinct at bay and prevent himself from baring his neck to the powerful alpha in front of him as a sign of his submission. He’d be damned if he let anyone force his body to submit into doing such an omega thing like presenting.
As the air got thick with aggression and anticipation around the vicinity, Gang Orca almost felt sorry for the students on what he had planned next. Before he could execute his plan, though, he felt a sudden shift of power that had him tensing instinctively.
“Get away from them!” Midoriya yelled as he used his full five percent as he gave the alpha a roundhouse kick. To his shock and dismay, the alpha managed to block him at the last second.
‘Midoriya!’ Todoroki realized. ‘Even with the strong scent in the air you-!’ Summoning his fire once again he readied himself to help his fellow omega if need be, his own internal struggle be damned, but it seemed he was too late.
Midoriya got startled at the sudden loud noise that pierced in the air, breaking all the tensions they felt until the still silence reigned in the arena. He didn’t have time to balance as he felt himself falling on the ground the moment he lost his momentum.
“Erm-” A voice droned over the speakers. “If I could have everyone’s attention please.” The speaker paused as he saw everyone turned their heads at the source of the speaker’s voice. “All ‘civilians’ have been rescued from the crisis area.” The few students who had just crossed the safe area smiled at each other while others continued to take note of injuries. “With the main objective of this test completed, I must bring these provisional license examinations to a close!” They exclaimed.
“It’s over?!” Midoriya shouted in indignation. Looking between Todoroki who had one side of his body still glued together and Inasa who looked significantly red-faced then he had been before the simulation started, he tried to think of the best way to help the both of them. The adrenaline running through his system keeping his mind away from the two overly aggressive scents lingering in the air. But before he had the chance to move a muscle, the voice was coming back over the intercom.
“After we tally up the scores, I will be presenting the results back here. Those who have suffered injuries, please direct yourself to the medical office. The rest of you, please change back into your normal clothes and regroup with your respective schools. Thank you.” The voice echoed around the facility.
A few people breathed a heavy sigh of relief while others gave nervous whispers of what their score will be. Once everyone was treated, dressed and reassembled according to their school and all volunteered civilians went home, the test organizer stood on a stage platform that had been placed in the middle of the makeshift battlefield.
“Hello everyone, you’ve all worked hard today, and I thank you for your patience. I have just a few words before presenting the results of the examination.” Razing a hand, he flashed a peace sign at everyone. “We, the hero public safety commission as well as our colleagues from the HUC, have two systems of point deduction that we used to evaluate your performance. Based on these merits, we will determine whether or not you qualified to get a Provisional Hero License.”
His tired eyes watched as a few of the students looked pleased by this fact while others had the equivalent of a deer in the headlights look. “In short, we were examining both the quality and nature of your conduct in times of crisis.” Gesturing to the large screen behind him, he continued with his mandatory speech. “The names of those who passed will be displayed here in alphabetical order. With all that in mind, please go ahead and review the results for yourselves.”
Pressing a button on the inside of the podium, the screen flashed on. Instantly, quiet murmurs mixed with sighs of relief and cries of defeat respectively. Flashes of scents suddenly filled the air as those who didn’t have complete control over keeping their scents contained let them out unintentionally.
“Mi… Mi… Mi… Mi…” Midoriya mumbled as he quickly scanned the screen. His heart felt like it was going to jump out of his chest as his eyes finally found the beginning of the M's. In the back of his head, he noticed Mineta doing the same thing right next to him. Suddenly his eyes passed over the first ‘Mi’ and he felt his eyes bulged while his mouth dropped in shock. His name was up there! His name was actually up there! The sudden pungent smell of too sweet wine suddenly assaulted his nose, making it wrinkle in discomfort.
“Where’s my name?!” Mineta cried. Turning to see Midoriya about to pass out, for a split second he was worried for his omega classmate before remembering his own dilemma. “Midoriya!” Shouting the other teen’s name seemed to snap his friend out of his daze. “Do you see my name up there? I think I’m missing it.” He explained desperately.
Midoriya gave a small nod in understanding and turned his attention back to the board to see if the small alpha had missed his name. The smell seemed to lessen at his actions, and he couldn’t be more grateful. When his eyes scanned over the screen more than once and still came up empty, he looked back down at his silently pleading classmate. “I’m sorry Mineta-kun, but I don’t see it either.” Giving an apologetic smile as he held his breath as the alpha gave a cry.
“No!” Mineta shouted. Quickly turning, he needed to find Kaminari or Sero, maybe both, and see if they could help him.
Todoroki watched him leave out of the corner of his eye, letting his own breath out now that the smaller teen was gone. Finally turning away from the screen when he felt a familiar presence stand next to him. Midoriya was giving him one of his bright smiles that made his heart do a small flip. Giving his own ghost of a smile in return, he waited for his friend to ask what was on his mind.
“Did you find your name Shocchan?” Midoriya asked curiously. He hadn’t really been paying attention if the other names were up there when looking for his own and then Mineta’s. He’d seen a few names he recognized but not everyone's. The other omega gave a hesitant nod that had him slightly on edge. “What’s wrong? Aren’t you happy that you passed?” He tried to keep his voice light, but with the way his friend's lips tightened in a thin line, he was honestly worried.
“I didn’t think I’d pass,” Todoroki said quietly. For a second he didn’t think Midoriya had heard him, but then the other let out a loud laugh.
“I’m pretty sure that’s how everyone’s feeling,” Midoriya reassured.
Todoroki just gave him a deadpan look as he watched his friend clutch his chest in what he assumed to be in relief. Blinking a few times slowly before clearing his throat to get Midoriya’s attention back. “That’s not what I-”
A loud explosion, with the sudden rush of burned sugar, echoed to their right and both jumped in surprise. Turning to see what had happened, they gave a collective sigh at the cause.
“Where’s my name damn it?!” Bakugou cursed while another explosion sounded off in his palms. Ignoring the uneased expressions of the other students around him, he could feel his blood pressure rising as he struggled to reign his scent back in.
“Ah.” Midoriya gave another sigh. “Kacchan needs to learn to control his anger, and his scent, a bit more…” Turning back to look at Todoroki, he was surprised to see the heterochromatic teen was looking back up at the screen. His usual unreadable expression in place but Midoriya had the feeling it was different somehow. “Shocchan-”
Both omega’s turned once again to the source of the noise, but unlike with Bakugou’s tantrum, both were surprised to see who had called out.
Inasa walked towards them at an incredible speed until he was face to face with both baffled teens in a matter of seconds. He took a few seconds to gather his pride as well as a few deep breaths before he bowed low. His head smacking against the hard ground as he bellowed out as sincerely as he could,
“I’m sorry.” He heard a few feet shift in surprise at his exclamation and hoped that Todoroki had been one of them before continuing. “My failure to pass… It was my own fault! My lack of heart and unwillingness to cooperate as a team with you until the last second is entirely to blame! If I hadn’t let my feelings towards you cloud my judgment, then we would have been able to defeat Gang Orca and his sidekicks with ease. It was also unsightly of me to lose what little cool I had left to try and match him in a standoff of alpha pride, so please,”
Pausing quickly to take another deep breath. “Forgive me!” Closing his eyes, he waited for the smaller teen’s response.
This… definitely hadn’t been what Todoroki had expected when Inasa had called to him. Especially with the expression, he had worn while walking over. But since it seemed that the alpha had thought long and hard about his apology, he decided that he might as well give his own. “From the very beginning, this was a result of my own actions.” Pausing a second to gather and organize his thoughts before continuing. “So cut that out.” He said evenly.
‘During the long journey up to now even more so than my drive to become a hero, I could only think of myself as his son and on top of that an omega. ’ Todoroki thought to himself bitterly. ‘And I let those burdens weigh me down.’ Releasing a long breath, he tried motioning for Inasa to stand back up.
“You really gave it to me straight back there. And thanks to that there were some important things that I came to realize.” He tried to put as much sincerity as Inasa had during his apology and pushed on. “But I will have to correct you on one thing.” Receiving a noise of confusion from the still bowed teen, Todoroki braced himself. “I shouldn’t have passed.” He said simply.
“What?!” Inasa yelled while springing up. The sudden change of blood flow making him lightheaded but he chose to ignore it in favor of staring wide-eyed at the other teen.
“What you said before, about lack of heart and not cooperating? That was both of us, not just you. I honestly don’t know what happened to make me pass over you, but I certainly don’t feel like I earned it.” Todoroki explained. Looking to a few of his classmates that had walked over he gave them all a small nod in greeting.
“Todoroki… did you not want to pass?” Mina asked, surprised.
“I did, but I don’t think I did enough to earn it.”
“But if you hadn’t passed then that would have meant that both of our top two classmates wouldn’t have made the cut.” Sero tried to reason.
“Well, the two of you are both top class no doubt about that, but consequently…” Mineta walked around the omega/beta duo to stand in front of Todoroki. His scent back under control now. “The egoistic and self-centered portions of your personalities backfired even if only one of you actually failed.” Giving a condescending smile, he pats the part of Todoroki’s arm that he could reach. “And so, the hierarchy begins to crumble.” He cheered.
Before anyone could say anything, Iida squished Mineta’s face in his hands and wordlessly picked him up to set him off to the side away from them.
“Shocchan…” Midoriya whispered, a bit stunned.
“Todoroki-kun…” Momo whispered just as shocked. She hadn’t been close to Todoroki’s fight with Gang Orca so she couldn’t really say much about her classmate's actions. But she was sure that he wouldn’t be questioning his results without a good reason.
“Ahem,” Mera called into the speakers once again. “Moving along, we’ll now distribute some handouts. Your scoring is described there in great detail, so please look over them carefully.” Giving the signal to the others, they began handing out the papers. “The cut off line was fifty points. You can read over the various actions and behaviors which resulted in a loss of points, followed by how many points were lost for each one.” He finished. Looking over the faces closest, he noticed an equal mix of understanding and outrage at some of the deductions.
“How’d you do Iida?” Midoriya asked after looking over his own paper. The beta gave him a slight smile before turning to fully face him.
“Eighty points. Overall, I feel like I wasn’t able to apply everything I learned.” Iida admitted a bit sheepishly. “What about you Midoriya?” He asked politely.
“I got seventy-one.” Moving so that he could show his friend his paper. “I wasn’t so much my actions themselves, but more my conduct before taking action that was the problem.” Thinking back, a few instances did stick out to him that could have resulted in reduced points. “Like my legs freezing up and stuff like that. That’s where I lost a good portion of points.” He admitted.
‘But…’ Looking around at his other classmates and students alike, he couldn’t help but wonder. ‘It was a point deduction system with no way of adding points… and anyone who fell below fifty points automatically failed so…’ Looking over to see both Inasa and Mineta intently studying their papers. ‘Why were they allowed to continue instead of being asked to leave the moment they dropped below fifty points?’ Shifting to look at Todoroki to ask what his score was, he frowned when he noticed a deep frown edged into his usually blank face.
“To all those who passed, depending on the nature of the emergency, you now have the authority to exercise privileges equal to that of pro heroes....”
As the speaker continued on, Todoroki let his mind wander back to his peculiar results. The paper in his hands felt heavy and the words on it even more so as he reread what it said. He still couldn’t shake the feeling that his passing had been some sort of a fluke. Looking over the words, though he already knew what they said, he only took some of the feedback into consideration, especially the areas where he felt their evaluations were correct. Less so for those who’s words didn’t seem to match their points. The sudden deafening sound of cheers and applause snapped his attention back to the present, and he focused back into whatever had made the other students so happy.
“To cope with the ‘from now on’ situation which I mentioned earlier, above all else, we desire “high quality” heroes and as many of them as possible…”
Todoroki couldn't stop a scowl from forming on his face at that. It was that exact mindset that had allowed his father to get away with so much away from the eye of the public. God only knows how many others were allowed to disguise themselves as heroes just because they could play along to what society deemed as heroic.
“You better believe-”
“I will !”
The dual shouts knocked him back out of his head once again. Looking between the causes of the declarations, he blinked as both Inasa and Bakugou continued their rants of promise. The burnt sugar smell flaring up once again.
“That’s great Kacchan!” Midoriya congratulated to the still steaming omega.
“I’ll catch up to all of you fucking extra’s in no time!” Bakugou screamed back.
Ignoring the explicit screams, Midoriya turning to meet Todoroki’s eyes. “Do you want to go find Aizawa-Sensei and tell him what’s bothering you?” He asked.
Todoroki thought for only a moment before nodding. If nothing comes out of a discussion with his teacher at least, he wouldn’t feel as uneasy as he did now. At least he hoped that would be the case. The beta wasn’t hard to find, all the teachers were lined up at the back of the room watching their students mingle with themselves and others. When their homeroom teacher’s tired eyes landed on them approaching, he could see his face twist into something akin to annoyance.
“We can discuss whatever questions you have about your results back at the dorms.” Aizawa instantly interjected before they could even open their mouths. Instantly, his student snapped their mouths shut and shared a look with each other. He had a feeling that whatever the two wanted to say would be something much more… troublesome than just discussing their results. “Spit it out then.” He conceded with a sigh when neither tried to say what was apparently on their minds.
“I wanted to talk to you about my results,” Todoroki said first. No point in beating around the bush, though, he supposed his wording could have been better if the way his teacher's eyebrow ticked was anything to go by.
“And I just said-”
“No Sensei.” Todoroki interrupted quickly. Aizawa’s expression didn’t change, but he could feel the shift in irritation as if it was visible. “I have a concern with how my points were added.” He tried instead. That seemed to settle down whatever comment was on the tip of his teacher's tongue because instantly he pushed himself off the wall and motioned for him to follow. Giving Midoriya a small thank you nod, his friend gave a smile before moving to rejoin their group.
They walked down a set of hallways that Todoroki didn’t bother memorizing but soon they reached an unmarked door. Aizawa motioned for him to enter first and he didn’t need to be told twice. The room was empty save for a few couches and a single table between them. He took a seat on one of the lounges while the beta sat across from him of the other.
“Let me see,” Aizawa ordered while holding out his hand. “What was your concern about? I know you said that you thought your points weren’t added right, but I’m not sure how you came up with that conclusion.” Scanning over the comments and notes when the paper was in his hand. He was slightly shocked to see that most of them weren’t necessarily positive ones.
“As you can see, the praises that would otherwise keep my score high is significantly outweighed by those that would have, or in this case should have, lowered it below the passing bar.” Todoroki began. Leaning over to look over the paper as well, he pointed to a few specific notes that had been written near the bottom. “These also raised my suspicion since they openly say that I will need more coop training before the next exam.”
Giving his teacher time to process everything he absently looked over the blank walls. Noting any cracks or stains in the otherwise white walls, he had a twisted sense of deja vu in comparison to his mother’s hospital room.
“I agree that with your results, there should have been no way you should have passed. That being said, I’m not quite sure what I, as only a teacher, can do. But I will certainly try to talk to the higher-ups and see if I can figure out what happened.” Folding the paper to put in his pocket, he met inexpressive dual-colored eyes. “I’ll keep your results for the meantime and present it to the meeting with the higher-ups. For now, just go through the motions, and when I have answers, you’ll be the first one I notify.” Todoroki gave a nod in understanding before moving to stand but stopped abruptly from walking towards the door.
“My old man…” Todoroki began, but the sharp nod from his teacher told him that he already knew.
“Believe me when I say, your father’s knowledge on this subject won't go beyond your name on that board out there,” Aizawa reassured while standing. He watched his student’s shoulders relax, if only slightly and he almost didn’t stop the sharp remark on the tip of his tongue. His opinion of the flame-user alpha was one of the worst-kept secrets among both the teachers at UA and hero society in general. He’s openly said, on more than one occasion, that Endeavor’s ego could use a few blows to bring him down a few notches from his high horse.
“Thank you Sensei.” Todoroki bowed before following his teacher out the door and back into the arena area. He gave both Midoriya and Bakugou a look when both gave concerned expressions, though the blond’s usual scowl was plastered on his face. Both seemed to get the hint and left it be for now. The others, however, didn’t seem to see the hint.
“Is everything alright Todoroki-kun?” Momo asked when she saw that her classmate had returned.
“Yay, we saw you walk off with Sensei and Midoriya wouldn’t spill,” Kaminari whined with a small pout.
Todoroki watched with slight surprise as someone slapped the beta on the back of the head.
“Leave him alone dude. He probably just had a question about his results or something.” Kirishima chided. Bakugou gave a small snort at his side, and he felt his eye twitch. “You might want to talk to Sensei about your own performance Bakugou.” Instantly the explosive omega rounded on him with his teeth bared. The blond's scent flaring up once again.
“What’d you fucking say Shitty Hair?!” Bakugou screamed at the now smirking alpha. Setting off a few warning pops, he was about to lunge at him until a stern voice sounded from behind them.
“Enough,” Aizawa called. He had half a mind to use his capture weapon but figured it was too much of a hassle at the moment. “Those who passed, your cards are at the collections desk. Those who didn’t,” Eyeing both Bakugou and Mineta in kind. “You’re coming with me to wait at the bus. Once everyone is accounted for, then we’ll head back to the dorms.”
The ‘so don’t waste time’ was implied but from the excited cheers of both Mina and Kaminari, he regretted not actually adding it. As he watched most of his students rush towards where the other schools were heading, he noticed that Todoroki was hesitating to join them. “Todoroki.” He sighed. When he had the teen’s attention, he made a shooing motion with his hand. “Go on.” When a few more seconds passed without movement, he was about to say something else, but someone beat him to it.
“Come on Shocchan! I want to send a picture of us with our licenses to my mom!” Midoriya called when he noticed that his friend wasn’t following.
That spurred Todoroki forward. He liked Ms. Midoriya. She reminded him a bit of his own mother and the thought of sending her a picture of their victory, even if his own was up in the air, made his lips quirk into the ghost of a smile.
“What’s up with half-n-half?” Bakugou grumbled as he watched the other’s leave. Tuning out whatever the small alpha beside him started blabbing in favor of locking eyes with his teacher. He hadn’t been close enough to hear what everyone had talked about before Todoroki disappeared with the man, but from the looks on the other’s faces, he guessed it hadn’t been good.
“Don’t worry about it,” Aizawa said. When he heard a growl bubbling up in Bakugou’s chest his eyes flashed and pressed, “Drop it.” Another growl followed, but it sounded more akin to annoyance than threatening.
“Fucking whatever, I’ll just ask the bastard when we get back.” Bakugou snapped. He didn’t get what the issue was especially if Aizawa wasn’t worried. But if his teacher wasn’t going to tell him, then he’ll just find answers elsewhere.
As they made their way to the waiting bus, everyone else was practically vibrating in line. Waiting with bated breath as the lines slowly got shorter and shorter until they were next. Iida and Momo, being their class representatives, were handed two stacks of pristine cards.
Iida, being the orderly one out of them, instructed that they all wait until they got back to the bus to keep from taking to long. With a begrudging moan from the rest of the class, they all hurried out and to the bus as quickly as they could. The distribution didn’t take long, and soon everyone was standing in amazement at the little cards in their hands.
“Deku, are you crying?!” Uraraka asked in surprise.
“N-no!” Midoriya spluttered as he tried to wipe the still flowing tears away. “You see… I’ve been helped by so many people along this journey, but I’ve also caused trouble for those same people.” Thinking back to his mother and All Might made his chest constrict almost painfully. “So that’s why this is my proof that I’m actually growing and improving you know?” Tears began to blur his vision again, but he didn’t bother trying to wipe them away.
“Yeah, you’re right!” Uraraka cheered as she watched her friend start to sob softly. A thought popping into her head as she pulled out her phone. “Hey Deku!” The omega snapped his attention to her immediately.
“Let me take your picture!” She laughed at the wide-eyed look she received. “I heard you told Todoroki-kun that you wanted a picture to send to your mom. If I’m taking the picture, then you both can hold up your licenses without issue.” Making a grabby motion with her hand once her own was back in her pocket, she smiled when Midoriya practically tripped over himself in trying to get his phone out.
“You’re a genius Uraraka!” Finally able to free the device, Midoriya handed it over while motioning for Todoroki to come closer. The teen looked unsure for a moment but seemed to shake whatever was keeping him in place fairly quickly. Winding his free hand around his friend’s waist, he thrust the other out to hold up the card. Giving the biggest smile he could muster, he couldn’t help but mentally cheer when he felt Todoroki’s arm draped over his shoulders and copy his other hand in holding out his own card. Though he couldn’t see his face, he was sure the dual colored teen was giving a blank look.
“All right boys, say ‘All Might.’” Uraraka trilled while holding up the phone.
The sound of light clicking could be heard, and soon all three of them were looking over the phone to pick out which one was the best.
The familiar booming voice made most of class 1-A not already on the bus turn. Inasa was rushing towards them at full speed and didn’t seem to be slowing down. Skidding to a stop right in front of Todoroki, he gave only a short pause before speaking.
“Todoroki!” He exclaimed at the unmoved teen. “I’ll be catching up to you in no time so don’t start slacking just because you passed you hear?!” He felt like an excited puppy but seeing the unreadable expression remain on the omega’s face, he blurted the thoughts he’d been keeping to himself out before he even realized it. “But honestly I still kinda don’t like you!” Slapping himself mentally as he felt his cheeks heat he figured it was better to make a hasty retreat for now. “So I just wanted to apologize in advance! Sorry!” He threw the words over his shoulder with a wild wave before sprinting off to rejoin his own group of classmates.
“What kind of apology was that?” Kirishima whispered. Flabbergasted by the other alpha’s words. As he watched the exuberant teen dash away, he couldn’t help but worry for his mental state.
“That man is…” Pausing when he didn’t quite have the words, Todoroki let his unfinished sentence hang in the air.
“Rather audacious, I’d say.” Aoyama continued instantly. “But also sensitive. He definitely has both qualities within him.” He praised.
Todoroki nodded at the alpha’s words. Grateful that someone had words to describe his feelings.
Midoriya gasped suddenly when he saw the Shiketsu class representative walking by. Taking off as fast as he could to try and catch up he reached behind himself for his backpack to take out his notebook. “Excuse me!” He called out when he was close enough.
Confused, Moura paused to see what was going on. Seeing one of the students from UA, Midoriya-san if he remembered correctly, stopped abruptly in front of him.
“Exactly what kind of training do you do to erase your presence in any situation?” Midoriya started eagerly, his pencil already at the ready.
Perplexed, Moura wasn’t entirely sure what the smaller teen was talking about. “I’m not sure what you mean but... We’ve never done any training like that.” He said slowly.
“But the girl from before-” Midoriya started but stopped himself. “I thought she had more she wanted to talk to me about.” He said instead. “I had hoped I could talk with her again, but I haven’t seen her since the exam ended...” Trailing off into a bit of a mumbling fit, he completely forgot that he was still supposed to be talking to Moura.
“You mean Camie?” Moura interrupted. He did need to get on the bus, but he figured that answering the omega’s questions wouldn’t take to long. “She said she wasn’t feeling well while we were heading to the changing rooms. She decided to take a taxi back to the station ahead of us.” He explained.
“I see.” Midoriya deflated slightly before bowing to the other teen. “Sorry to have bothered you.” He apologized before making his way back to his friends.
Moura smiled slightly beneath his hair as he watched Midoriya’s retreating back. He wished he could have helped more, but that was the best he could do. Thinking back to his classmate a sudden thought pushed itself to the forefront of his mind almost violently. “Now that I’m thinking about it… She has been acting strange for a while now.” He thought out loud. “Something about her just seems… off…”
In the back alleys near the train station, a phone starts to ring for the third time in a row. Its high pitched sound masking the squelch of large clumps of wet flesh smacking against the concrete floor. On the fourth loop through the call finally passed through as the receiver answered it.
“You finally answered!” An annoyed voice yelled from the other end. “Where the hell have you been this whole time?!” They screamed. As the sound of childish giggles coming from the other side, they felt their patience snap. “ Toga !”
Chapter 2: Fallen Gods and Risen Sinners
Chapter by DaimeGuiral, DanielStrokke
Welcome back, lovely sinners!
I'm sorry that this is so late, we have both been swamped with school and work more than anticipated. We will try and get more chapters out but in the meantime please be patient. We love all of you! <3
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
“Toga!” Mr. Compress screamed into the receiver. His scent spiked with rage, making a few of the others in the room stiffen or gag.
“ Don’t be like that Compress, I just wanted to have a little fun before we get all busy again in our missions .” Himiko continued to giggle. Her cautious steps turning into skips when she thought she made a safe distance from main roads and other Hero students who might recognize her.
“Don’t neglect to check in regularly!” He chastised. Trying to take steadying breaths to control his frustration before he ended up snapping at someone. Their numbers were already low so he couldn’t afford to lose control and start killing people because he let some child get under his skin. “If they catch even one of us, then we might as all be dead!”
“ Don’t worry about me. ” She tried to sooth the irate alpha. “ If it comes to that then I’ll just use my quirk for a while so they can’t track me. It’s what I did before I joined you guys. ” Giggling at the harsh sigh that followed. “ Besides, I obtained vital information as well as something extra special from playing my little game. Boss will definitely like it and maybe Tomura too ! You can even tell him we’ll have lots of fun playing with Heroes as we manipulate them in the palm of our hands. ” Himiko chirped.
“And why’s that?” Mr. Compress asked sarcastically. Really, what could the psychotic beta really have done while on her little escapade that would be so worthwhile?
“ Because, ” Himiko pauses for effect. “ I’ve obtained both little Izuku’s and the Todoroki boys blood !”
Mr. Compress didn’t know what to say. He certainly hadn’t been expecting that . Sneaking a look to the man beside him, he contemplated relaying the information now or later.
“Well?” Came the raspy demand. The scent of hard iron hitting him did nothing but making his own scent flicker in annoyance even more.
‘Looks like now.’ He thought with an internal groan. Ending the call, he knew the girl wouldn’t care, he turned around to fully address his superior. One intense red eye trained on him from behind the detached hand on his face.
“She didn’t elaborate, but it seems she did manage to gather some…” Thinking over his next words carefully, he hoped Himiko’s prediction would be correct. “Interesting samples to put it plainly.” He decided.
“Interesting samples of what ?” Shigaraki demanded. He didn’t give a damn if his own scent was now choking his other subordinates in his growing agitation. It was bad enough that they hadn’t managed to contact everyone yet but then the crazy bitch decided to run off and play some little game of hers? If it wasn’t for the fact that their boss seemed to like her for some reason, he would have personally disintegrated her by now.
“The blood samples of Bakugou Katsuki’s classmates. Midoriya Izuku and Todoroki Shouto.” Mr. Compress finally confessed as he tried not to breathe in the smell of decay lingering in the air. He watched the beta carefully, gauging whether to leave the man to his own anger or if it was safe to stay.
“I never gave her any order like that.” Shigaraki hissed through clenched teeth. His fingers itched to wrap around something but he held fast. Choosing instead to start scratching on the newest patch of healed skin on his neck. The slight pain he felt helped him keep his anger at bay. The same couldn’t be said for his scent.
“She did say-”
“ What else could that lunatic have possibly said that would be so important?” Shigaraki snapped. Purposefully sending a wave of the rotting smell towards the alpha.
Mr. Compress swallowed around the egg-sized lump in his throat as he tried not to puck. Croaking out where he’d been cut off, it took all of his will power not to try and show his dominance. His instincts demanding that he put the beta in his place but his common sense realized early that his life was worth more than that. “That the boss, and possibly you as well would be pleased to hear about this.”
Taking a cautious step back, Mr. Compressed decided to only leave until their boss or Chiyeko arrived. Somehow he always had a way of calming Shigaraki’s temper or tantrums where everyone else had failed. Chiyeko just managed to get him to shut up long enough for everyone else to breathe.
‘Why did the Boss trust him of all people to become his second in command, that I’ll never understand. Anyone, especially Chiyeko, would’ve been a better Underboss than this overgrown manchild .’ He thought.
“Why would he want-”
The shrill sound of a phone ringing cut off Shigaraki’s rants and Mr. Compress had never felt more relieved. Quickly pressing the answer button without looking at the ID, most of their subordinates often switched their numbers, careful not to leave any footprints to give the Heroes a reason to track them. Ever since then, Mr. Compress didn’t bother saving nor memorizing everyone’s numbers.
He brought the speaker to his ear. “What is it?” He asked in a rush.
“ Compress !”
Mr. Compress wanted to facepalm. ‘Great, first the psychotic beta and now her equally over expressive mate .’ He groaned.
“What is it Twice?” He forced himself to ask instead of pressing the end call button like he truly wanted.
“ Fuck you too asshole !
I’ve got some good news ! ” Twice cheered.
“Is it the same type of ‘good news’ that Toga just gave me?” Mr. Compress growled. They were all too used to Twice’s split speak to pay much attention to it, let alone get angry at it anymore whenever an insult was thrown their way.
“ You finally got ahold of her?!
Why did she contact you first ?!” Twice screeched.
Mr. Compress had to physically pull the phone away before his eardrums erupted from his ungodly shriek. “She didn’t contact me, idiot. She finally decided to answer her phone out of the blue.” He growled.
“ Oh, that’s a-”
“Get on with it Twice, I don’t have all day to listen to you talk about your mate when you’re the one who called me first.” Mr. Compress demanded.
“ Why should I tell you ?
I managed to convince someone to join the League!”
For a second, Mr. Compress thought he’d heard wrong. Twice had managed to convince someone to join their ranks? The beta was hardly able to talk without contradicting himself, how had he managed to actually convince someone to join them?. ‘What the fuck is going on? First, the maniac thinks she has done something amazing and now this? Someone has to be fucking with me.’ He thought.
“All right, where are you?” Might as well see who the unlucky soul was that would only serve as mild entertainment, if not annoyance, upon their arrival.
“ In the North district, near warehouse six .” Twice informed.
That wasn’t too far from them. Mr. Compress gave a grunt in acknowledgment before giving their own location.
“ I’m not taking him to base ?
Why don’t you come here ?” Twice asked.
“Of course not! We still aren’t sure who leaked our last location and the boss isn’t willing to risk it happening again.” Mr. Compress snapped. His scent once again flaring. “Especially in his own home.” He reminded. The small gasp he heard come over the speaker made his eye twitch at the sheer amount of shock the sound held.
“ I completely forgot about that! ”
“Clearly, just hurry up and get here so we can start the new procedures.” Mr. Compress groaned. He just wanted the conversation to be over with for his sanity's sake.
Fuck you .”
The line went dead and Mr. Compress couldn’t be more grateful as he began to regain control of his scent again , his head starting to pound from a too familiar headache he seemed to constantly have nowadays.
“What did he want?”
Whatever relief he felt at the end of the call instantly died at the reminder of the one who triggered his constant headaches.
Shigaraki growled at being ignored at first but his curiosity had been piqued while listening to the one-sided conversation so he let it go for now.
“It seems that Twice has found someone interested in joining our ranks.” Keeping his voice even, he hoped that whatever tantrum the beta had started had burned out during the call. His scent certainly seemed calmer even if it still made him want to gag. “Idiot wanted to take him back to the new base, I told him to come here instead.” Seeing the stiff nod of agreement helped make his shoulders relax slightly.
“Did he say who it was?” Shigaraki asked, his curiosity only growing.
It wasn’t a surprise when they’d gotten offers from more experienced and newly established villains after the incident in Kamino but after the botched kidnapping of the UA omega, they’d been adamant in screening and… ‘interviewing’ every new member who contacted them. The only part he took pleasure in participating in this “recruitment stage” was when someone failed to meet their expectations and he was allowed to get rid of them.
Being given the honor of killing the failures was the best perk he could ask for as second in command. Only barely beating out the free range he had of all information gathered on a daily basis.
“No, but I figured if they were roped in by Twice of all people then they couldn’t be that dangerous.” Mr. Compress shrugged “At best, we might actually get a new member. And if worse comes to worst, they fail and you get to play cat and mouse in the back for a while.” Seeing the wide smile poke out the sides of the hand at the last part made him shudder visibly.
Hopefully, Twice wouldn’t be too long, he hated being around Shigaraki in his bad moods but he’d rather deal with the tantrums over when he found something to smile about. Especially when his scent seemed to match his moods and put the barest hint of lilies into it when he was happy.
‘Maybe it’s a good thing he’s the right-hand after all… If he was his own leader with no one to give him rules or boundaries…’ Shuddering at the thought he pressed the first speed dial on his phone and waited. Their boss would like to know what was happening even if he didn’t really care about the outcome. He trusted their judgment enough to leave all matters like this in their hands. Plus he’d know not to call on them unless it was urgent in the meantime.
As they waited among their stolen spoils for their fellow villain, a different encounter was taking place not too far away.
A taunting laugh filled the room as a bound man looked on with one of the many stolen quirks in his arsenal. His eyes long replaced with grotesque tissue scars that only helped to show his status as a monster.
Across from him, a skeletal figure sits ramrod straight in a provided chair for guest. His clothes seemed to drown him as they hung off the wilted body in too many folds and creases. A deep frown and sunken eyes trained on the man restrained behind the thick glass.
“I would have figured you’d be to busy with work to pay me a visit. The second semester should have already started right?” The man asked. Not bothering to hide his amusement at his own words. “So why have you come to see me during such a busy time, All Might?”
“I’m here to settle things with you, All for One.” Toshinori declared. The bound man in front of him just continues to laugh as if he’d heard the funniest thing in his life.
“Is that so…” Sensei hummed. “You know, this place is a bit stiff with how they handle their prisoners.” His lopsided smile stretched wider behind his oxygen mask when he felt the small shift in All Might’s chair. “I can’t move freely, even to get a small scratch on my back. My vitals and brain waves are monitored at all times to the point that any thought of using one of my quirks are met with every gun in the room being pointed in my direction. It almost makes me wonder what they’d do to restrain my pheromones if I still had them.” He lamented as if he’d actually get sympathy from the fallen hero. “Being kept so far underground, banished to a place exclusive only for the most wicked and powerful. Truly, they couldn’t have picked a more fitting name for this fine facility.” He praised.
“Then you realize that there’s no way you’re getting out here?” Toshinori tried. Though he full well knew the answer already. When the smile didn’t leave the alpha’s face, he felt something heavy and sour settle in his gut.
“Let’s say for your ease of mind, that I believe that to be true. Why are you here now?” Sensei asked lightheartedly. “What could an imprisoned god possibly tell a wither boned sinner that I haven’t already?” The tension between them growing thicker the longer his words hung in the air. “Come now, won’t you tell your troubles to a fellow sinner?”
“First you’re a self-proclaimed god and now a lowly sinner? The mighty truly have fallen.” Toshinori hissed. But it seemed his words had no effect on the monster in front of him as he just laughed in reply.
“Whoever said that gods couldn’t be sinners themselves?” Sensei growled to challenge his beta nemesis.
Toshinori almost took the bait. He could feel his own challenging growl bubbling in his chest as he struggled to keep his own scent under control. The sudden loss of the remaining traces of One for All had thrown his body into a state similar to how it had been in his teenage years. But then his mentor's words slapped him almost literally in the face.
‘Don’t let that beast get under your skin anymore then he already has Toshinori.’ Gran Torino had warned. ‘I’d go in your place if I could but we both know it has to be you. Just like it had to be her.’ The older beta had said softly. Almost like it was said to chase away a still too fresh memory.
He replayed the words for a couple loops before he finally calmed down to meet the scar tissue of All for One’s eyes. Squaring his shoulders to sit at his full height, he took another steadying breath. To his satisfaction, he noticed that the self-confident smile the older man had worn was nothing but a thin line now.
“You love to hear your own voice don’t you?” Toshinori asked calmly.
“Now, now All Might. Try seeing it from my perspective won’t you?” Sensei mock pleaded. “I’ve been rather lonely with no one coming to visit me. The people here don’t like to talk you see, so I just couldn’t help myself now that I know someone will actually answer back!” His smile returned, but not for long.
“Where is Shigaraki?” Toshinori spat. He was here for a reason and they didn’t have time for the alpha’s incessant rambling.
Sensei paused, momentarily surprised by the complete change in subject but recovered quickly. “I don’t really know. Unlike you, I’ve already let my successor carry on.” He said truthfully. He’d been sure to keep all known hideouts and warehouses locations confidential to only the boys and those they trusted. Making sure that even he himself was kept in the dark about ninety percent of them just in case this situation were to happen.
“Which one is your successor?” Toshinori emphasized.
“Hm? Now, what could you mean by that?” Sensei feigned innocently.
“Don’t play games with me All for One.” Toshinori snapped, his scent finally spilling out, only adding to his annoyance. “The other boy at the Kamino ward, the one with blue fire hotter than Endeavor’s, we didn’t have a civilian name for him and we still don’t. The only name related to him that we could find was what he’s going by right now. But you know it, don’t you?” He asked, accused.
“Of course I do. I wasn’t so desperate as to allow someone unknown under my wing.” Sensei scoffed incredulously.
“Then who is he?” Toshinori pressed.
“His name is Dabi,” Sensei said with a sly smile.
“That’s not what I-”
“ All Might, you have three minutes remaining. ” A voice over the intercom interrupted.
Toshinori was quick to sit up straight again as if he’d been scolded by his master or Gran Torino. Taking another minute to calm down again as well as retract his scent, he decided against trying to look where eyes no longer existed. “That’s not what I asked All for One.” He managed after a deep breath.
“Oh, you meant his actual name?” Sensei could practically hear the beta’s teeth grind with the effort to not lose his cool again.
“Yes.” Toshinori hissed the word out with all the restraint he had.
“My apologies All Might, but I’m afraid I can’t divulge that information,” Sensei admitted though his tone sounded anything but apologetic.
Toshinori hadn’t expected that. To be honest, he’d expected the alpha to beat around the bush more before giving only a vague answer. “And why is that?” He asked with a bit more curiosity then should be necessary.
“I promised Dabi I’d keep his secret so long as he served me well,” Sensei said fondly. “And the last I knew, he was doing everything beyond even my expectations.” It was true that everything had come together much more smoothly then he could have dreamed when he decided to put the delinquent in charge of everything. He’d be lying to himself if he said he hadn’t thought about switching successors. But he was already too invested with Shigaraki and didn’t feel up to starting from stage one all over again.
“So that’s how it is…” Toshinori muttered mostly to himself.
“Now,” Sensei started suddenly, making the withered heroes attention snap back to him. “You’ve had your turn for questions. Isn’t it only fair that I get to ask one of my own?” He asked. When he only received silence, he decided to just continue with his thoughts. “How is everything up there? Is the world still shaken at the news of your retirement?” He asked eagerly.
“ Please don’t answer that All Might. We’ve been careful to make sure that he’s been cut off from any knowledge of the outside world. ” The same voice from before called over the intercom quickly.
“It doesn’t matter. I’m sure I can take an educated guess without you saying anything.” Sensei laughed mockingly. “It doesn’t matter though. I trust that both those boys will keep themselves concealed until the time is right. Building their influence and numbers in the meantime.” Even if what he predicted was wrong, he knew that at least one of them wouldn’t let him down in the grand scheme of things. After all, he had first-hand experience with even the most well thought out plan going south, but that didn’t mean things wouldn’t work out in the end.
Hearing the name of his boy made his attention snap back to the present.
“He’s supposed to kill both my successor and me, isn't he.” It wasn’t a question. Toshinori had no doubt in his mind that it was the truth.
“Correct.” Sensei agreed simply.
“Then what’s the other boy's purpose in your grand scheme of things?” Toshinori asked.
“To make society completely lose their faith and trust in the notion of heroes once and for all .” Sensei smiled wide.
“Hm?” Frowning thinly when Toshinori didn’t repeat himself. “I’m sorry but I didn’t quite catch that All Might.” He pressed when the silence stretched a little too long.
“I said,” Standing stiffly from the cheap chair. “I won’t let that happen. Either of those things.” Toshinori exclaimed, willingly letting his scent out in a show of dominance. He never did care to do this before but he figured if there was a time to do it, it was now. “Whatever future you’re reaching for, whatever future you’ve implanted into their heads, will never happen.” Finally letting the growl in his chest free he gave the villain his strongest glare.
“What I’ve implanted you say…” Sensei mussed.
“ All Might, I’m afraid we’ve already let this visit go on longer than advised. Please exit the door provided.” The same voice called.
“I’ll do everything in my power to stop whatever plan you have in motion. And even if I do fall at the hands of my masters own flesh and blood, I have faith in both my successor as well as many others to finish where I leave off.” Turning from the bound man he gave one last look over his shoulder. “Enjoy spending the rest of your life trapped in a place even the strongest titans couldn’t escape without help.” With that, he took his leave. Praying to every deity on his way up the winding maze of security that he hadn’t been lying.
When the doors closed behind the withered hero, those still in attendance behind the one way glass froze as the sound of almost childlike giggles filtered in through the speakers.
“The rest of my life huh?” Sensei mused. “It’s not either of our lives you should be concerned about… Toshinori....” His smile stretched so wide it honestly started to hurt.
As the guards looked on with silent apprehension at the still giggling alpha, Detective Tsukauchi pulled out of the gate and made his way over the long bridge separating Tartarus from the nearest town. Toshinori gave a heavy sigh beside him when the looming building finally faded behind them.
His mind was still reeling… He’d just faced his master's murderer outside the battlefield and told him that he would not only defeat him but his master’s own grandson as well… The pressure of tears pushed against his waterline but he didn’t want to cry right now. Had no right to cry right now.
There were things to be done now. Plans to organize and strategies to consider and no time to show any sort of weakness that could be used to the villain’s advantage. Setting his eyes ahead, he didn’t look back towards the prison or the monster that was now locked inside it, and instead, kept his eyes on the future. Whatever it held.
Constructive criticism is and will always be welcome in this house!
"By chance, did he… tell you all his villainous plans in detail?” Tsukauchi asked, breaking the deafening silence that stretched too long until it felt uncomfortable for him. He waited for his friend to gather his thoughts patiently until he heard a small huff from him.
“Sorry, but I was only able to get bits and pieces of new information. Though I’m not entirely sure how useful they’ll be.” Toshinori sighed. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw his omega friend nod slowly in understanding.
“Sadly we were all prepared for the long haul when he was still unconscious. Unfortunately, we all agree that the only one he’d be willing to talk to freely would be you.” Tsukauchi reminded.
“I know, Gran Torino said the same thing,” Toshinori admitted. “When we get back to the station I’ll write up my full report and we can start discussing-”
“Sorry, give me a second.” Digging his phone from the pocket of his oversized suit, Toshinori was surprised when he saw the I.D. projected on the screen.
‘Young Midoriya?’ Clicking the message to show the pictures that had been sent, he couldn’t help a soft smile from tugging at his lips. The sight of Todoroki and Midoriya faces greeted him. While the smaller omega was smiling, the duel colored teen had on his usual deadpan look but he noted Todoroki looked much more relaxed than normal.
Toshinori couldn’t help but smile when he saw them holding out their new hero licenses. Pride filled his chest at the sight until confusion took over for a second when he wondered who took said picture. The next image answered his question as he looked at both Uraraka and Iida giving their own smiles and showing off their own cards as well.
Thanks to you and everyone else, we were able to take another step forward! The caption below the pictures read.
“Who texted you?” Tsukauchi asked curiously. He tried leaning over slightly to sneak a peek but he couldn’t quite see it while driving at the same time.
“Don’t worry about it,” Toshinori said fondly while tucking his phone away from his friend’s prying eyes. “Just keep your eyes on the road will you?” The omega gave a laugh, choosing to let them fall into a comfortable silence once again as they made their way to the precinct.
Back at the 1-A dorms, everyone was winding down from the tiring day they all had. Almost everyone was letting their scents mingle with one another, the common room being their shared safe space and it made everyone more comfortable.
Todoroki and Midoriya were curled around each other as they lounged on the couch. Their scents were contained as they switched their attention from the smaller teen’s phone and their classmates chatting amongst themselves. Only a few hadn’t shown themselves yet, and those who were present were actively trying to think of ways to celebrate their monumental accomplishment.
“We could throw a party tomorrow night since it’s Saturday?” Momo offered. She wasn't sure if they had the supplies for one, but a ‘request out’ form to Aizawa in the morning would solve that.
“What about the rest of us who didn't pass?” Mineta accused from his spot on one of the other couches. The conversation he had been having with Kaminari completely forgotten as he looked to the female alpha. His friend made a small noise of protest when his scent apparently flared with his words.
“It’s just you and Bakugou dude. The only one who’d care about that is you.” Kaminari laughed, though his nose was still burning. The small alpha snapped his head around so hard he worried he’d gotten whiplash.
“You’re supposed to be on my side Kaminari!” Mineta cried in betrayal at the beta. He whined when he only received a small shrug in return.
“As much as I’d like to agree with you Kaminari, Mineta does have a point,” Uraraka said from her spot on the floor. Both Iida and Hagakure sat next to her as a small circle of books strung between them. Looking at Momo, she gave her friend a reassuring smile. “I like the idea of a party but why not think of something we can all do?” She asked gently.
Momo nodded her head in understanding before an idea came into her mind. Taking out a notebook from her bag, she grabbed one of her favorite pens and flipped to a random page. “We can make a list and see what works for everyone.” She smiled at everyone in the room.
The students all voiced their agreement enthusiastically, with their scents flaring in excitement. As several of their classmates began to throw out some ideas, Todoroki watched them with only mild interest but mostly kept his attention on Midoriya’s phone.
They’d been watching random videos since after dinner, waiting for the third member of their little “pack” to finish his study lesson with his “not” boyfriend. Midoriya had gotten his hands on a new hero documentary and they all wanted to watch it together.
“Deku, Todoroki, do either of you have any ideas?” Uraraka asked out of the blue.
Todoroki shifted as Midoriya paused the most recent video they were watching of someone with seemingly fewer brain cells than Kaminari overused his quirk try to use a pogo stick on a trampoline from the top of a house. Sometimes he had to hand it to American's that their fearlessness knew no bounds.
“Uh, sorry, I can’t really think of anything that you guys haven’t said already.” Midoriya laughed sheepishly. Rubbing the back of his neck with the hand not holding his phone, he gave the beta a small smile. “What about you Shoucchan?” Looking up as best he can from the position they were curled up in to give the duel colored teen a curious look. “Do you know of anything we could do?” He asked.
Before Todoroki could even think of an answer, he heard his own phone ring in his lap. Checking the caller I.D. had him turning the volume off and putting it back down. “I’m afraid I don’t have any experience in this field of… friendship gatherings.” He said simply. Everyone was looking at him with a mix of expressions he couldn’t really place. “Did I say something wrong?” He asked when no one said anything for a few moments.
“Would you like me to introduce you to-”
Asui shared a nod with Midoriya once her tongue had mostly retracted back into her mouth. “Shouldn’t you answer your phone Todoroki-kun? It could be important.” She asked with a finger to her lips.
“No.” Todoroki deadpanned to the straightforward beta. In truth, he probably should but he didn’t want to get a headache right before bed.
“O...K…” Momo said slowly. “Well… if either of you thinks of anything before bed please don’t hesitate to say!” She finished with a smile.
“Sure thing!” Midoriya smiled back.
“Of course.” Todoroki nodded. As everyone's attention seemed to shift away from them, he turned back to the other omega but froze when he saw a determined look being directed at him. The scent of calming evergreens wrapping around them had him relaxing even if he wanted to tense and throw up his defenses.
“Do you want me to answer the phone for you?” Midoriya whispered so that the others didn’t turn back. Feeling only a pinprick of guilt in using his scent to keep the duel colored teen from clamming up.
Todoroki actually thought about it for a split second before shaking his head. “Thank you for the offer, but I’m sure I can handle whatever he wants to talk about.” He reassured when he received a skeptical look in return. The calming smell only intensifying and for a moment he was worried that the others would smell it and turn back to see what was wrong.
“Alright, if you’re sure.” Midoriya relented after a moment. He was just beginning to reel in his scent when the sudden sound of Todoroki’s phone made him jump in surprise. “I thought you turned your sound off?” He asked as he watched his friend pick his phone back up. Dual-colored brows scrunched together in a way that was kind of cute.
“Only for him ,” Todoroki said absently as he stared at the name displayed on the screen.
“Who is it?”
“Are you going to answer her?” Right as the words left his mouth, the phone fell silent but only for a few seconds before starting up again.
The hesitation in his friend's voice was both surprising and worrying. Todoroki had confessed to him and Bakugou during the last heat they had helped him through that his father had picked up the habit of using Todoroki’s sister when he couldn’t get a hold of his son on his own.
“Maybe it’s not what you think?” He tried. The doubtful look that quickly flashed across Todoroki’s face made his stomach twist with dread as his scent flared out to wrap protectively around his friend. But as the phone started on its third round of rings, their classmates had started to turn to investigate the noise.
Todoroki rose carefully. Excusing himself with what sounded like reluctance before moving to the nearest hallway. Midoriya watched him go and felt the need to follow after him to make sure he’d be alright while still giving him his space and privacy. A hot hand coming down hard on his shoulder made him jump in surprise. Turning to see who startled him, he made a small squeak as to who it was.
Out in the hall, Todoroki checked to make sure he was alone before finally swiping to accept the call. He didn’t even get the phone all the way to his ear before his sister's voice came through loud and clear.
“ Are you alright Shouto ?!” Fuyumi asked as soon as the ringing had stopped and the voicemail hadn’t picked up in its place.
“Yes?” Todoroki hesitated. He was honestly surprised to hear the other omega’s high pitched voice on the other end and not the deep bass of their father.
Fuyumi released a grateful sigh of relief. “ Thank goodness. I thought there was something wrong when you didn’t… ”
Todoroki listened to his sister ramble on for a moment, letting his own shoulders ease at the sound of her familiar voice. When he finally noticed that Fuyumi had stopped talking, he felt a bit of heat that had nothing to do with his quirk crept up his neck as guilt settled in his stomach. “Sorry, I wasn’t listening.” No use lying when he’d been caught red-handed. The small giggle from the other end made the small bit of guilt in his gut eased.
“ So I’ve noticed .” Fuyumi teased, a small smile tugged on her lips that she hoped her baby brother could hear. “ But I was rambling again so I don’t really blame you .” She reassured. She and Natsuo have been slowly introducing the concept of playful teasing to their youngest sibling. But both were aware that they needed to take it slow.
“So why are you calling so late?” Todoroki asked when his sister giggles finally died down. “I know you don’t have class tomorrow but don’t you usually spend the weekend making lesson plans?” He remembered her always worrying about things for her class before he was moved into the dorms.
“ Oh, we’re actually going on field trips all next week !” Fuyumi gushed, momentarily forgetting the original question.
“That sounds like fun,” Todoroki said sincerely. It was always nice to hear Fuyumi so animated about her job after so long of either not seeing her, or the times he did see her, she always looked so sad.
"It will be ! Oh ! But that’s not why I called !” Fuyumi suddenly remembered. “ I was calling to congratulate you on passing your provincial license exam !” She cheered with as much support as she could put into her own words.
For a second, Todoroki felt his whole body grow rigid. His mind automatically flashing back to his original woes of why the other omega was calling. “How did you know?” He managed to ask. Hoping his voice stayed even. The bitter bite of dread and betrayal creeping up his throat felt and tasted like blood. It wasn’t Fuyumi’s fault that she was being used by their father to get to him. She just wanted them to get along.
“ Natsuo called me when I got off work .” Fuyumi was quick to rush out. The resignation she just barely picked up on gave her a clue about her baby brother’s train of thought. “ He said he saw the results on one of the forums he followed and couldn’t wait to tell you in person- ”
She made a sharp gasp and Todoroki worried for a split second that something was wrong until she continued.
“ I wasn’t supposed to tell you that !” She cried in horror. “ Oh, darn it ! Please don’t tell him I told you in advance. He really wanted it to be a surprise when he congratulated you… ” She pleaded.
To be honest, Todoroki didn’t know what the issue was but if it helped her not sound upset then he didn’t see what the harm was. “Sure, I’m not sure when I’ll be able to see him though since they’re still organizing when family members can visit.” He wondered for a second if he could talk to Aizawa about letting his siblings visit as a type of reward for their hard work.
"That was something else I wanted to ask you about, ” Fuyumi said, suddenly hesitant.
“What is it?” Todoroki didn’t understand his sister's sudden change in mood. He was starting to get dizzy from the way she could go from worried to happy to sad to happy to worried all over again in just a short period of time.
Fuyumi considered her words carefully. Hoping that her next words wouldn’t end the conversation early. “ I was planning a small gathering to celebrate your accomplishment !” She started, putting as much confidence into her voice as possible. “ And I wanted to know if you would be able to ask to come home for a day or two ?” Waiting with bated breath, she crossed her fingers in anticipation.
‘That’s it?’ Todoroki thought to himself. He had thought she’d asked him to do something impractical with the way she’d been so apprehensive in asking.
“I don’t see why not. Would you be opposed to me bringing a few friends along?” He started thinking of a few people who wouldn't mind joining him at his family mansion. Plus, if he has witnesses then his father wouldn’t be able to do as he pleased so freely.
“ Bring as many of your friends as you want, ” Fuyumi said instantly. It was almost surreal to remember that her heavily sheltered baby brother had actual friends . To hear him openly admitting to having friends made a few tears gather at the corner of her eyes. “ Just let me know how many your bringing so I make enough snacks and food for everyone !” She chirped. A list of things she’ll need to go to the store for already made in her head.
Todoroki gave a small nod before realizing she couldn’t see him. “Alright, I’ll be sure to call when I have a definitive answer.” He agreed. Listening for a few more minutes as Fuyumi asked a few more questions such as food and decorations, humoring her when she practically gushed about some things she might have seen at the store that would make for cute ornaments here and there. A small actual smile slipped onto his lips as he continued to listen to her rambling. When a sudden yawn came out of know where from his chest, a light blush started to heat his checks at his sisters knowing giggle.
“ I should let you get some sleep. It is late and the sooner you sleep the sooner you can ask your Sensei in the morning. ” Fuyumi said softly.
Todoroki chose not to mention how no matter how late he stayed up, he’ll always wake up before dawn instinctively. He didn’t want to ruin the light and happy mood with him making an off-handed comment.
Instead, he gave a thoughtful hum in agreement. They bid their goodnights and well wishes like normal until Fuyumi’s voice seemed to drop to a small whisper, almost like she wanted to tell him a secret.
“ We are proud of you Shouto. Both Natsuo and I. ” Fuyumi whispered gently. “ We haven’t told mom yet, and I made Natsuo promise not to since he was going to see her today. ” She heard the barest hint of breath hitching but she had more to say. “He’d be proud of you too, Shouto. Even if he isn’t here… ”
“Fuyumi.” Todoroki felt a prick of pain start behind his left eye. He didn’t shout, he never would at his kind-hearted sister, but they both knew what his tone of voice meant.
“ I know but… ” Fuyumi chewed her bottom lip for a second before continuing. “ I’m sorry I shouldn’t have- ”
“No.” He cut her off suddenly. “No, It’s alright. I’m alright.” Todoroki reassured quickly. “The pain isn’t as bad as it used to be. I think it’s getting better I just…” Pausing to take a steadying breath, he said, “You just surprised me, is all.” Putting a bit of pressure over his scar, he couldn’t help but flinched when it only made the pain behind his eye intensify. Even if he knew his scar had long healed, he still felt the searing pain in it, as if the wound was still fresh and raw.
“ If you say so… ” Going back to chewing her lip, Fuyumi wasn’t sure what to say now. Luckily, in a rare moment of reading the mood, or maybe just luck, her baby brother broke the tense silence.
“I want us to start talking about him. Even if I don’t remember much about him, he’s still my brother.” Todoroki said gently. “ Our brother. You shouldn’t have to tiptoe around me just because of a little headache.” He added. Though the last part sounded a bit more bitter than intended.
“ Little headache ?” Fuyumi sounded sarcastic to her own ears and hoped the other omega wouldn’t take it as rude.
Todoroki could practically see the quotation marks from her words and he couldn’t help but give a small huff of laughter. The sound sounding weird and instantly he stopped but it seemed that was exactly what was needed to ease the tension.
“ I’ll let you go alright ?” Fuyumi asked softly. Using her voice typically used for the classroom, but sometimes used on her siblings.
“Alright.” Todoroki agreed around another yawn. “Hey, Fuyumi?” He asked suddenly after a few seconds. For a moment, he thought she’d already hung up.
“ Hm ?”
“I love you.”
The words slipped out before he could stop them and for a split second, a prick of fear clenched his chest before his sister's voice came through the other end like a soft fall breeze.
“I love you too Shouto,” Fuyumi said gently. Big tears started to pool around her eyes, threatening to fall before she quickly whipped them away. “Get some sleep, hopefully, I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Waiting until the line disconnected before taking the receiver from his ear, Todoroki felt lightheaded. And to his shock, he realized the barest hint of a purr was bubbling in his chest. Stifling the sound once his brain caught up to his shock, he couldn’t help the uncomfortable feeling of slight paranoia that tugged at the back of his mind. Taking a minute to compose himself before making his way back to the common room.
It seemed the commotion from before had died down to Mina, Momo, and Iida all looking over the paper from before while the others talked and laughed among themselves. A few people seemed to have left while others had joined them.
“Shoucchan!” Midoriya cheered happily from his same spot on his couch when he caught sight of Todoroki. He felt the weight on his shoulder shift at his sudden exclamation. The sweet scent that had mixed with his starting to get the tinge of a burnt smell to it in annoyance.
“Finally half-n-half, stupid Deku wouldn’t stop fucking mumbling about going to check on you. Kept squirming too, fucking, was about to go back to E- my room .” Bakugou growled.
Just about biting off his own tongue with how fast he tried to correct himself. The unimpressed look he received from the duel colored teen made his teeth grind with the strength to not scream at such a late hour in the night. “Shut up and get over here.” He managed out instead.
“But I didn’t say anything.”
“ Get over here .”
Todoroki gave a ghost of a smile before doing as told. The two broke away from each other so that he could sit in his usual spot between them. Midoriya on his left with Bakugou on his right. They all settled back together, curling around each other as the remote was found and the T.V. unpaused from the waiting screen.
The mix of cool evergreens and caramel with clay helped lull him into a sense of relaxation he would never be able to accomplish by himself. Not even halfway through an interview with Mount Lady, Midoriya muttering to himself while Bakugou made passive-aggressive remarks every once and a while, he could feel his eyelids begin to droop.
Drifting lazily between sleep and awake, the same quiet, barely there rumble in his chest started up again. But unlike before, he was too tired to try and stifle it, too content to bother with the effort. His brain reasoned out that with all the noise from both the T.V. and his other classmates, no one else would be able to hear such a small sound.
When sleep finally won the battle, he missed how the whole room grew deathly silent. Everyone holding their breath with a mix of surprise and awe as they listened to the gentle purring coming from the couch. The added hint of iced coffee mixed into the already swirling mix of scents in the rooms only added to the small wonder.
Midoriya and Bakugou shared a look over their classmates head, neither quite sure what to do with their now sleeping companion. Talking with their eyes, they both agreed to leave him asleep until everyone else decided to turn in for the night. Their arrangement put on hold for now.
This is Molly with an important update concerning both this story and my own. My brother and I will not be posting for an undetermined amount of time due to an unexpected and urgent family emergency. Daime has already been contacted and is aware that Danny won't be working on the story for a while so don't worry about that. When everything has cleared and we both feel that we can return to our own respective works without issue then this message will be deleted in place of an actual chapter.
For now, this is goodbye.
