At The End Of The Road (Lies Happiness)

Chapter Text

Todoroki is in pain. He’s aware of this, but not much else. His brain is filled with cotton. He knows he’s in pain from training with his father for hours or was it days? He can’t tell at this point, all the days just blended into a mess of pain. But now he is close, so close to being safe. A few steps away from being safe even. He passes out three feet from the doorstep.

2 weeks prior

“HEY LISTENERS!!!!! FOLLOW IIDA FOR AN EXCITING ASSEMBLY!!!” Present Mic yelled to his nearly deaf English class.

“EVERYONE FALL IN LINE BEHIND ME!” Iida said to his classmates as they start to walk to the assembly.

“Hello everyone! It’s your favorite furry mammal, the principal! I’m here to announce the start of summer vacation. Since the League of Villains hasn’t shown up within the past two weeks, we have decided that it is safe to send you all home for the next month! You can start packing as soon as you leave this assembly!” the principal announced from his podium in between cheers from the student body.

As the principal spoke, no one noticed the slowly spreading ice coming from the dual quirk user’s foot.

“Hey, Todoroki! You excited to go home man?” Kirishima asked, pumping his fist in the air excitedly on the way back to the dorms. “Me, I can’t wait! It’ll be just me, Katsuki, my bed, and video games!”

Todoroki just nods as a response, his face completely void of emotion.

“You sure you’re ok Shouchan?” Izuku asked, worry clear on his face as he studied the other boy’s two-toned eyes. “I-I know you’re gonna say that you’ll be fine. I just... worry is all, and with your sister getting married she’ll be out of the house and well... If she’s not there I don’t know what he might do to you,” he finished, seeing the younger boy start to break down a little, and starting to break down himself just thinking about it. “I-If you want to talk we could step into the grass for a minute. It’s no trouble, really!”

Shouto nods mutely, following Midorya into the grass. “Midori-Izuku. I’m honored that you’re worried for me, but there’s no reason to be. He’s out of town the last week, so it’s only 21 days with him. After 14 years, I think I can handle 21 days with that bastard.”

Only 21 days. 21 days until he can go back to school. 21 days until he’s free from his father. 21 days until he gets to see Izuku. Only 21 days. He repeats this in his head while he packs, over and over and over again, until he starts to forget about the coming three weeks.

“Is that him?”

“Of course, look at the scar!”

"Shhhhhh! He'll hear you!"

“Oh yeah! Hey, um, Todoroki-san?”

A group of young girls caught his attention.

“So, uh, can we like, have your autograph? Pretty please?”

“Alright. Just get it over with,” he mumbled.

As the train slowed to a halt one of the girls fell over onto his chest.

“I am so sorry Todoroki-sempai!” She flirted shamelessly, fluttering her eyelashes at him. “Will you  ever  find it in your heart to forgive me?”

Todoroki checked the current stop and sighed. He still had sixteen minutes until he was home. This was gonna be a long ride.

“Shouto. As you’ve arrived home, I will expect you in the training room as soon as you have put your bag in your room. I wish to see what that  fool  All Might has been teaching you.” His father’s booming voice echoed throughout the halls of his childhood prison.

“Of course Father. I will be there in a minute,” Shouto answers, his eyes downcast and submissive, the image of the perfect son Endeavor expects him to be as he prepares to begin his long painful weeks of hell.

“Get up! I created you to be better than this! Arghh! You’re just as useless as your pitiful excuse of a mother!” Enji shouts as he chokes Shouto, his hand burning his son’s throat as he shoves him against the wall. “You are a failure! You’re almost as bad as  Touya , you insignificant brat!” he snarls, throws Shouto to the ground where he lays, gasping for air, his throat hitching every few seconds as he tries to breathe.

“Don’t talk about Mother that way!” the injured ice-maker rasps, hate clear in his voice.

“You dare to disrespect me, your father! Enough! I have wasted enough time on you today. You  will  do better tomorrow. I don’t need to remind you what happens if you fail,” he threatens, storming off through the door. Still on the floor, Shouto closes his eyes, blocking tears he knows won’t fall. That display of weakness had been beaten out of him years ago. He slowly picks himself up, heading back to his room to unpack and prepare for dinner.

14 days later

Only 7 days left. 7 days until he’s free from his father. 7 days until he’s safe. 7 days until he gets to see Izuku. Only 7 damn days.

Todoroki is a mess of bruises and burns. He tries to avoid mirrors. No use in making himself puke, just to get beaten for that too. Every single offense, from walking too loudly, to eating too much, Endeavor punishes with beatings, even more than usual. Usual. There's nothing usual about this house. Todoroki's beginning to wonder how he’s still alive, much less happy, and dating the love of his life. And he is happy. Sometimes. When he’s not here. His  chosen  family, Izuku, Uraraka, Iida, and Shinsou, all love him for him and accept all of his issues and habits that his rat bastard of a father had managed to instill in him. He somehow managed to ask out Izuku, and he said yes to him. So, yeah, he’d call his life pretty ok. Until, somehow, his homophobic asshole of a father found out about his relationship with Midorya Izuku, a boy,  the  boy that his father cannot stand.

“Shouto. What is the meaning of this?” Endeavor holds up his phone, more specifically, a picture that Uraraka had taken of the two of them when they had gone out on a date. It’s a sweet picture of the two of them holding hands and gazing into each other's eyes, smiling sweetly. Ironically, Izuku had been the one worried about it reaching his father, and Shouto had told him that his father would never find out. He couldn’t have been more wrong though. A sharp slap brings him back to the present.

“Is this what I think it is? Are you in some kind of relationship” he spits the word out like it’s repulsive. “with All Might’s brat?”

He can’t tell at this point, the past two weeks just blended into a mess of pain. But now he’s close, so close to being safe. A few steps away from being safe even. He passes out three feet from the doorstep of Aizawa Shouta.

Thump

It’s a quiet night in the Aizawa household. Hizashi is at the radio show, Shinsou is working on his homework in his room, Eri is sleeping peacefully, and Aizawa himself is dozing off in an armchair until something large outside his apartment falls with a thump. Aizawa immediately jumps out of his chair, gets his capture weapon in an offensive position, and opens the door, quickly scanning the hallway for the source of the noise. Of all the things he thought the noise could have been caused by, a gravely injured student was not one of them. “Todoroki! Why ar- Oh God, you need help. Hitoshi!”

“Yeah, Dad?”

“Get the emergency kit!”

“Oh my God, is Dad ok? Are you ok? I’m on my way down!”

“It’s not for your father.”

"Another stra- Todoroki-kun! Is he ok? What happened!?"

“I don’t know. We have to wait until he wakes up, but until then I’m going to try to see what I can do while he’s still unconscious.”

Aizawa hissed, flinching at the sheer amount of bruises and burns covering most of Todoroki’s chest and arms before applying a salve to his bruises to help them heal faster, and burn cream. He also cleaned and stitch a cut that was oozing blood and pus before deciding that he’d better wait till his student was awake to treat the rest of his injuries.

A few hours earlier

Aizawa hissed, flinching at the sheer amount of bruises and burns covering most of Todoroki’s chest and arms before applying a salve to his bruises to help them heal faster, and burn cream. He also cleaned and stitch a cut that was oozing blood and pus before deciding that he’d better wait till his student was awake to treat the rest of his injuries... but he didn't have to be awake to tell Aizawa what happened. He's a teacher and a father. A damn good one. Any self-respecting teacher or parental figure would at least suspect something about a student like Todoroki. Quiet, reserved, moves quickly and flinches easily. To anyone who's looking, it's obvious. It's also obvious that no one  was  looking. Todoroki had probably been expected to deal with injuries like this, and worse without letting anyone know, and it infuriated Aizawa. And that's a hard thing to do. He takes a deep breath, grabs his capture weapon, and heads out to find Endeavor. They need to talk.

Finding the flaming trash can- Aizawa had silently promised to never call him by his name again, as with the Purple Grape Baby- it was quite easy. Just look for the trail of flaming villain bodies.

“It’s come to my attention that my student was harmed sometime during the break. Would you happen to know anything about it?”

"What are you talking about? Has my son been in contact with you? I don't remember giving permission." Endeavor's eyes squint, and he has a vague look of anger displayed on his face, most likely thinking about the horrible things he would do to his son once he had returned home.

Approved? Approved? Aizawa was unaware any such approval was needed to contact your goddamn teacher! The rules that man had in his household were insane, but unfortunately familiar...

Don’t let anyone know where you are.

Eat fast, and then get out.

Speak when spoken to.

Stay away from them.

Run away.

Run.

He shook those thoughts from his head. No time to get hung up on the past. Right now, he needed more information. But who... Todoroki’s mother had been out of the picture for years, but if he could talk to her, she would probably have information and be willing to share it. Although, being in a mental hospital would take away her right to testify in court... Nevertheless, it was a good place to start. Now just to find out where it is...

Chapter Text

The first thing Todoroki notices when he wakes up is the sound of... Mariokart? Why is there Mariokart in his house? Oh God, he's late, there's a video game playing, he slept in, his father's going to kill him. Then he realizes, he's not there anymore. He kind of remembers running away... Oh. He's at Aizawa's house. When he finally brings up the strength to crack open his eyelids, he's surprised to find Shinsou and  Bakugo  of all people sitting on the couch next to the futon, where he's laid out. Bakugo must have seen he's awake because the next thing Todoroki knows Bakugo's saying, "Oi. Half n' half's awake."

Shinsou looks over at him, kind of worriedly, and says, "I'll call Dad, he's probably gonna want to talk to him, find out what happened."

"Yeah, but he went to talk to that one," with a thumb directed at Todoroki, "s shitty dad. He might not want to be bothered."

"I'll text him. He doesn't have to respond right away, but at least he'll know."

Wait. Aizawa went to talk to his father. That cannot end well. His father is nothing like what the tabloids say, and Aizawa won't be expecting that, he'll get hurt or possibly even killed, and it'll be all his fault for not telling him what to expect!

"Um. Todoroki? You still with us? You look like you're trying to conceal an overload of anxiety, and believe me, I know the look."

"Yeah." He coughed, his voice rough from his earlier training session. "Yeah, I'm ok."

"Don't pull that bullshit on me. Look, you need help, and no one's going to give it to you unless you actually let people into your life! I know right now therapy sounds stupid, and I was at the same place once, but trust me, you won't regret going. At least think about it." Bakugo finishes off his rant very differently than the way Todoroki had envisioned it going.

The door opened, and the three of them flinched. Aizawa stepped through the doorway, relief clear on his face.

"Todorki, you're awake. Thank god."
