Midoriya’s shoes slapped against the pavement as he ran, his heart beating hard against his chest. Todoroki, Kirishima, Iida, and Momo followed closely behind, panting and appearing almost as anxious as he felt. Momo informed them that the tracking device that she had managed to attach to a Nomu was a few buildings away. The window of the building was too high for them to peer inside and Midoriya climbed onto Iida’s broad shoulders. At first he saw nothing, his eyes slowly adjusting to the darkness. Then he saw it.
Bakugou’s lifeless body lay a few feet away from the window, his skin ghostly and his clothes soaked in blood. His eyes were glassy but seemed to see Midoriya as he gasped, falling off of Iida’s shoulders. He assumed that he had leaned backwards too far, but he soon realized that the others had disappeared. He found that he was alone in the alley until a figure on the ground caught his eye. Bakugou’s body was now in front of him.
“Kacchan!” Midoriya cried, rushing to him and dropping to his knees. “Please be alive, please be okay!”
Bakugou didn’t respond and Midoriya shuddered as he touched his freezing skin. He was dead.
“Don’t go! Please don’t go! Please! You can’t die, not yet!” Midoriya sobbed, tears sliding down his freckled cheeks and he cried over Bakugou’s body.
Midoriya woke up in a cold sweat, a trembling mess. His hand shook as he pushed himself up and glanced at the time. It was still fairly early. He had just finished eating dinner with his mom after meeting All Might. The image of Bakugou’s lifeless body were still fresh in his mind and he felt nauseous. Midoriya had been so scared when he failed to save him and his heart had broken when he heard that Bakugou had been kidnapped when he woke up in the hospital.
It had hurt him whenever he thought of his childhood friend alone and scared in some villain’s lair. Midoriya needed to make sure that he was safe. He climbed out of bed and dashed down the hall, pulling his red shoes on quickly.
“You’re going out again?” Ms. Midoriya asked curiously, seeming concerned from where she sat on the couch. He had just snuck out to see All Might an hour before and she was worried with villain activity worsening every day and about Bakugou’s kidnapping.
“I-I’ll be back soon!” Midoriya called, tugging on a jacket.
He ran until he stood in front of Bakugou’s house, a feeling of dread washing over him. He knew that Bakugou had been at the police station to tell the police what had happened after he was captured. He should be back by now, but Midoriya found himself worried. What if a villain snuck through his window while he slept and hurt him? He needed to see Bakugou, to make sure that he was safe.
He didn’t want to knock on the front door because the thought of talking to Bakugou’s parents after years of not seeing them made him nervous and he felt bad for bothering them so late at night. He walked around the house until he came across a window that appeared to be a bedroom. He saw Bakugou in the bright light that illuminated his room. He was sitting at his desk, staring at nothing.
Midoriya watched him for a moment, he looked calmer than usual and relaxed. He could tell that he was tired but he seemed to be distracted.
Midoriya tried to wave to grab his attention but Bakugou was half asleep. Midoriya climbed the tree that was closest to the window and activated One For All to jump off and landed skillfully onto the roof and knocked gently on the window. Bakugou jumped and his red eyes found Midoriya, his demeanor changing until he looked as if he wanted to push Midoriya off of the roof. He threw the window open and glared icily at the other boy.
“What the fuck are you doing here, Deku?”
“Hello,” Midoriya greeted him, hoping that he seemed less nervous than he felt inside.
“Answer the damn question!”
“I needed to see you, Kacchan.”
“What the hell is that supposed to mean? You didn’t need to climb up here like a monkey or some shit! Use the door like a normal person!” Bakugou demanded.
Midoriya laughed as he realized that him climbing the tree was pretty crazy when the front door was only a few feet away. “I didn’t want to bother your parents.”
“You’re bothering me now!” Bakugou yelled, then regretted it. Midoriya looked hurt and looked down as if he was too scared to meet his eyes. "Come inside at least, you idiot!"
"Okay!" Midoriya smiled and crawled into Bakugou's bedroom.
“You think you’re cool now or something?” Bakugou asked, leaning against the wall and shoving his hands into his pockets.
Midoriya cocked his head to the side quizzically, “Not really?”
“Don’t think that I wouldn’t hear about your disguise.”
“Kirishima told you, huh?” Midoriya asked, already knowing the answer.
“It sucks that I didn’t get to see you trying to act tough. I saw you wearing that gold chain, though.”
“And I didn’t look cool?” Midoriya asked, laughing. The events of tonight felt like it had happened a long time ago. It all seemed so silly now, buying disguises and sneaking around.
“You looked like a damn nerd,” Bakugou told him and Midoriya felt tears spring to his eyes. What would he ever do without Bakugou’s insults?
“You’re crying,” Bakugou observed as his eyes widened. He felt awkward around people when they cried and didn’t know how to react. Especially since Midoriya had been laughing just a moment ago.
“I’m just so happy, Kacchan,” Midoriya struggled to explain in between sobs and relieved laughter that he couldn’t contain any longer. He was relieved. He was so glad that Bakugou was okay.
“Then why the hell are you crying?” Bakugou demanded, confused and irritated that he couldn’t understand why Midoriya had become so emotional.
“I’m just so happy...I’m so happy that I get to live in a world with you still in it. I’m so grateful that I can spend many more years with you. I want to hear you yell at me and call me a nerd every day. I’m just so glad...that you’re alive,” Midoriya wiped his tears away with his sleeve in vain, but tears streamed freely down his freckled cheeks with no sign of stopping.
“Why wouldn’t I be alive? What would have happened to me?” Bakugou demanded.
"You have no idea how scared I was! I don't know what I would have done if something had happened to you, I'd never forgive myself! I almost lost you…" Midoriya cried.
Midoriya thought of all of the things that could have happened, seeing Bakugou’s lifeless body again. He suddenly couldn’t stand being so far away from Bakugou, being across the room from him felt like they were miles apart. A heavy silence fell over them as they both struggled to find what to say next, the only sound was Midoriya's muffled sobs.
Surprisingly, it was Bakugou who spoke first.
"They didn't hurt me, ya know," Bakugou spoke in a normal voice, which sounded like a whisper compared to his usual obnoxiously loud voice. "Their plot was to throw a temper tantrum and try to convince me to join their shitty side. I wasn't in as much danger as you think, it didn't seem that they had plans to harm me. But I'm safe now and only ended up with a fucking headache in the end." His shiny red eyes met Midoriya's wide eyes and Bakugou looked calm.
Midoriya nodded and cried harder as Bakugou watched helplessly.
"I'm alive, Deku. I'm not going anywhere, I promise," Bakugou told him.
"I almost lost you because I was too weak to save you," Midoriya whimpered guiltily.
Bakugou realized that Midoriya was still blaming himself over what happened and he felt responsible for Midoriya's pain.
"Hey, you know why I told you to stay back when that asshole with the top hat was pulling me into the portal, right?" Bakugou asked. Midoriya shook his head and he continued. "I was worried about you...I didn't want...I didn't want you to get hurt because of me."
Midoriya was so shocked that he stopped crying, his eyes wide. "Really? I thought you didn't want me to get in the way..."
"Whatever! I'm only telling you this because if you had tried to save me, you could have gotten seriously hurt and that's the last thing I want to happen! In the end, you did rescue me! So stop fucking crying! I'm safe because of you!"
"You're right, you're safe and I'm so happy that you are, Kacchan! I mean it with all of my heart," Midoriya smiled and Bakugou tried to glare back to make him stop, but he only continued smiling.
"Stop smiling so much, dammit!" Bakugou yelled, feeling odd with Midoriya being so cheerful around him.
"I'm sorry, but I'm just so happy," Midoriya said, beaming.
"Shut up! Quit being so fucking loud! My parents are sleeping, you dumbass!" Bakugou snapped, his face turning a bright red.
"You're the one being loud, Kacchan----"
"Shut up!" Bakugou shouted.
"I really missed you," Midoriya told him quietly.
"I was gone for two days," Bakugou said.
"That's two days too many."
Bakugou looked at the floor, feeling embarrassed.
"Quit being so overdramatic, idiot."
"I don't want it to happen again," Midoriya said.
"I sure fucking hope you don't," Bakugou snapped sarcastically.
"I'll protect you, Kacchan! You'll be safe as long as I'm around!"
"What makes you think you're strong enough to protect me? Besides, I don't need an annoying nerd like you around all the time! You just jumped onto my roof in the middle of the night!"
"It was important!"
"Starting tomorrow, I'll devote myself to protecting you! I won't let anything happen to you again!"
"Shut the hell up, dumbass! Don't try to protect me! Just leave me alone!"
"I'll follow you forever and make sure that you're safe---"
"The last thing I want is some nerd following me around like a damn puppy!" Bakugou shouted, pushing Midoriya towards the open window.
"Wait----!" Midoriya cried, trying to struggle against Bakugou's grip.
"Go away!" Bakugou snapped, pushing Midoriya out the window.
"Okay, Okay. I'll go," Midoriya mumbled, sliding down the roof and landed expertly on the ground. He looked up and smiled kindly. He waved up at Bakugou, who grimaced. "Goodnight, Kacchan!"
"Shut up!" Bakugou shouted and a few birds sleeping in a nearby free flew away, startled by his outburst.
Midoriya turned to run back home but Bakugou's voice stopped him.
Midoriya couldn't hide his shock, his green eyes widening. "You're welcome! I would do anything for you!"
"Stop with the sappy shit!" Bakugou yelled, trying to seem as irritated as possible. He tried to convince himself that thanking Midoriya wasn't a big deal and that he still hated him. But he found himself staying at his window all night, waiting for Midoriya to return.
Midoriya waited for Bakugou to wake up for what seemed like hours. He normally was late for breakfast and loudly complained that everyone ate his serving.
"Save some for Kacchan!" Midoriya reminded everyone in the noisy chaos that was the morning rush.
Momo had made mochi and everyone was piling heaping piles onto their plates with chopsticks.
"If Bakugou wants some he can come down here himself," Kaminari pointed out.
"Besides, he's super grumpy in the morning anyway," Kirishima said, who seemed to be a nagging mother to Bakugou sometimes as he was always lecturing him on how to be nicer.
"He's always grumpy," Jirou laughed, unplugging her ear jack from her cellphone.
"He never stops being grumpy," Kaminari added and Midoriya realized that he was trying to steal mochi from the plate he had prepared for Bakugou.
"That's just his personality, he was like that when we were little," Midoriya said, raising the plate higher, out of Kaminari's reach.
"It's way more peaceful without him. If he was here, he'd be shouting already," Jirou giggled, twirling her earphone jack on her finger.
"He'd be like, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU GUYS DOING HERE! STOP BEING SO DAMN NOISY!" Kaminari shouted, twisting his face into a dramatic scowl.
"I'LL BLAST YOU ALL INTO OUTER SPACE!" Kirishima yelled, joining in.
"You guys sound exactly like him!" Mina cried, laughing so hard that she nearly fell out of her chair.
"You guys are dead if he ever finds out!" Jirou told them, covering her mouth with her hand to stifle her laughter.
"Everyone quiet down!" Iida shouted, waving his hand in the air.
"Midoriya, you try it!" Kirishima suggested enthusiastically.
"You want me to mock Kacchan?" Midoriya asked, the idea was foreign to him.
"Yeah! It'll be funny! He's always the worst to you!" Kaminari added.
"Isn't that kinda mean?" Midoriya asked nervously, he wasn't trying to die today from one of Bakugou's explosions if he were to walk in.
"Come on, Midoriya! I know that you can do this!" Kirishima laughed, pumping a fist in the air.
"Midoriya! Midoriya! Midoriya!" Kaminari chanted encouragingly.
"S-SHUT UP YOU STUPID EXTRAS! I'M STRONGER THAN EVERYONE HERE! I'LL KILL YOU ALL RIGHT NOW 'CAUSE I'M VIOLENT AND IMMATURE----" Midoriya rambled loudly, then stopped when he realized everyone was looking behind him.
"What was that, Deku?" Bakugou asked, sparks shooting from his palm.
"I-I…" Midoriya stammered, flinching and trying desperately to form a sentence.
"You're dead now," Kaminari told him as he and Sero laughed at Midoriya's doomed fate.
"I heard you mock me too, don't think you're off the hook!" Bakugou spat and Kaminari fell silent, sipping from a milk carton.
"I saved you a plate!" Midoriya announced, hoping that Bakugou would be nicer.
"What the hell is this, a peace offering! I'll still kick your ass! I'm not eating that crap!" Bakugou spat, glaring at him.
"Ooh! More for us!" Kaminari said, attacking the extra plate with his chopsticks and piling the food onto his and Kirishima's plates.
"You guys are so fucking loud in the morning!" Bakugou hissed.
"That's funny coming from you…" Jirou mumbled, reconnecting her earphone jack into her phone, blasting music to tune out Bakugou's inevitable outburst.
"I'll kill you, too!" Bakugou shouted at her as Midoriya nervously rifled through his yellow backpack.
"Kacchan, please eat something," Midoriya pleaded, pulling out a chocolate protein bar.
"Stop trying to take care of me! I'm not a baby!"
"Leave me alone, dammit!" Bakugou snapped, slapping the protein bar away.
"Kacchan!" Midoriya cried, following him as Bakugou exited the dorm building.
"Go to hell!"
Midoriya sighed, giving up as he stopped at the dorm steps. He watched Bakugou walk and noticed that his shoelace was untied. A threat had been detected and Midoriya threw himself into action.
"Kacchan! Stop!" Midoriya yelled, chasing after him at lightning speed.
"What now----" Bakugou came to a sudden halt and Midoriya slammed into him, knocking both of them down the stairs. "What the fuck!"
"S-Sorry! Are you okay?" Midoriya cried, pulling himself off of Bakugou.
"What did you do that for, idiot!" Bakugou snapped, reaching up and touching his forehead.
"I'm really sorry! Your shoe was untied!" Midoriya explained, pulling bandages from his backpack.
"So you decided to attack me!"
"I didn't mean to. Here, let me help you," Midoriya offered, gently wrapping the bandages around Bakugou's head.
"Hands off, asshole! I can do it!"
"Okay," Midoriya mumbled, watching him fumble around with the bandages. "Are you sure you don't need help?"
"Stop making such a big deal! Just do it!" Bakugou yelled and Midoriya helped him.
"Ow!" Bakugou hissed, Midoriya had wrapped the bandages too tight.
"Sorry! I'll fix it!"
"For someone who wants to keep me safe and shit, you sure do like injuring me."
"I'm sorry…you can punch me in the face if you want," Midoriya said, squeezing his eyes shut as if preparing himself for the worst.
Bakugou glared at him, but softened slightly, amused by Midoriya's fierce loyalty. "Whatever. Just watch your back."
"Okay!" Midoriya nodded, smiling as Bakugou's if
words weren't a threat.
Bakugou continued the trek to the school building and Midoriya followed him.
"Wait for me!"
Bakugou rolled his eyes and cursed, but he slowed down enough for Midoriya to catch up.
"Dude, what happened to you?" Kirishima asked when he spotted Bakugou's bandaged head.
"Stupid Deku tackled me."
"That's not what happened," Midoriya spoke up from his place, kneeling beside Bakugou's desk by his school bag.
"Yes it is! And stop trying to put protein bars in my bag! Don't think that I didn't notice, dumbass!"
Midoriya froze, protein bar in hand. "I don't know what you're talking about…"
"I don't want to eat those gross healthy bars!"
"He just cares about your health, man!" Kirishima told him and Bakugou glared back.
Eraserhead entered the classroom, ending their dispute and the chatter from their classmates. Midoriya was too focused on Bakugou to focus in class, staring at him from his seat. He was so close, he wanted to hug him and protect him from everyone. He had almost lost him and was glad to still have him in his life.
Bakugou got called on to translate a paragraph in English and he spoke flawlessly to Midoriya's amazement.
"You're so smart, Kacchan," he whispered when Bakugou had finished.
"Shut up, moron."
During lunch, Bakugou noticed that Midoriya appeared to be waiting for someone by one of the long food lines. Afraid that he was waiting for him, Bakugou turned around and left. He went to one of the newly installed vending machines and purchased a sweet custard bun. He found that he didn't want to eat lunch alone and warily returned to the cafeteria. He spotted his friends loitering towards the back of the room, probably waiting for Mina and Sero to get their food.
"What's up, dumbasses."
"Hey, Bakugou! Kaminari's Nintendo switch came in the mail yesterday. Wanna play a few games tonight with us?" Kirishima asked.
"I'll kick your asses!" Bakugou promised, grinning, always up for a challenge.
"Threat detected!" Midoriya screamed, kicking the pastry from Bakugou's hand.
"What the fuck!"
"That's a snack and has nutritional value! You need to eat healthy meals, Kacchan!"
"Shut up, dumbass! I don't need your advice!"
"You have to eat all of the food groups! Did you not listen when your mom lectured us about eating veggies when we were little!"
"I don't need to eat vegetables, I'm not a little kid anymore!"
"You still need to eat vegetables, even if you're not a kid," Kirishima pointed out, laughing.
"Don't tell me what to do!" Bakugou shouted.
"Open your mouth," Midoriya instructed, sticking chopsticks with broccoli towards Bakugou's mouth.
"I'm gonna kill you!" Bakugou threatened, slapping the chopsticks out of his hand.
"I knew you would do that…" Midoriya announced, pulling something from his jacket pocket.
"Back up chopsticks?!"
"Please eat something healthy, Kacchan!" Midoriya pleaded.
"No! Stop it!" Bakugou snapped, grabbing his hand and trying to stop Midoriya from feeding him.
"See the shit I have to deal with!" Bakugou shouted, glaring at Kirishima and Kaminari.
"Just eat the broccoli, man," Kirishima offered.
"I don't know, dude. I'm kind of with Bakugou on this one, I haven't eaten a vegetable in five years," Kaminari said.
"Midoriya's been pretty hyper today, huh?" Kirishima asked, setting his menu down.
"Yeah, he has! He even mocked Bakugou this morning! I never expected that from him," Kaminari agreed.
"I wish I would have recorded it," Jirou giggled from beside Kaminari.
"Why the hell are you guys talking about that nerd?" Bakugou demanded furiously.
"Calm down. He got really scared when you were kidnapped, we all were. He probably just wants to protect you and keep you safe because he's worried," Kirishima said and Bakugou clutched his glass of cola so hard that he thought it would break.
"I don't care how he feels! He's stupid and weak and I can't stand him!" Bakugou shouted.
"Come on, tough guy, we all know that's not true," Kaminari said, grinning mischievously.
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?"
"We know that you care about Midoriya. If you hated him so much, you would ignore him because he wouldn't be worth your time. I've heard you say that you ignore people who don't deserve your respect, but you for sure don't ignore him. I mean, you even let him eat lunch with you today," Kirishima said.
"You probably love all of the attention he's giving you recently because it's an opportunity to hang out with him, huh?" Jirou added, hiding her smile with her hand.
"Wow, Bakugou's such a softie if you think about it!" Kaminari pointed out.
"Shut up, all of you!" Bakugou yelled, blushing until his face was as red as a ripe tomato. He was so flustered from their teasing that he sent sparks from his palm without realizing it.
"I've never seen you blush, Bakugou!" Kirishima laughed.
Across the table, Kaminari and Jirou were losing it.
"Sure, it totally looks like you don't secretly care about Midoriya at all!" Jirou teased sarcastically as she giggled.
"You're gonna set the menu on fire," Kaminari wheezed.
"It's okay if you love Midoriya, we won't judge you," Kirishima told Bakugou, who grew redder.
"I don't love anyone! Especially not that nerd! Love doesn't even exist!" Bakugou yelled defensively, only making the others laugh louder. "Stop laughing! It's not funny!"
"Hey, isn't that Midoriya right there?" Jirou asked, pointing outside with her earphone jack.
"Ha-Ha, so funny," Bakugou deadpanned, rolling his eyes and sipping from his glass of cola. He was the closest to the window in his booth, but he turned his head to not give her the satisfaction of him looking.
"Yo, it is Midoriya!" Kirishima exclaimed genuinely, waving to someone through the window.
Bakugou finally looked over and saw the freckled demon who had harassed him all day. "Not this shit again!"
Midoriya brightened when he saw Bakugou look at him and he smiled. He waved and Bakugou gave him the middle finger, then turned his focus to his soda.
"He's coming in," Kaminari said as the others watched Midoriya skip towards the entrance.
"I'm out!" Bakugou announced, leaping out of the booth and raced for the entrance, the only exit in the diner. He flew past Midoriya, who took a second to process what had happened.
"Don't talk to me!"
"Just let me care about you!"
"No! Stop following me!" Bakugou shouted, turning his head to glare at Midoriya, his red eyes blazing.
"I wasn't following you! Mina told me where you guys were at!"
"What are you, my fucking mom? You're being weird and clingy! Stop chasing me or I'll throw you into the sun----"
Bakugou ran into a display of fruit outside a corner store, a sturdy box made of wood. Pain shot through his leg as it clashed with the display and he fell to the ground.
"Kacchan! Are you okay?" Midoriya cried, rushing to his aid.
"Fuck you," Bakugou hissed from his place on the ground.
"Here, I'll help you," Midoriya mumbled frantically as he saw Bakugou struggle to stand.
"I'm fine! Don't touch me, you're bad luck! I get hurt every time you're around!" Bakugou shouted, starting to hobble away.
"You weren't looking where you were going," Midoriya reminded him as he wrapped an arm around Bakugou's shoulder and they hobbled together.
"Whatever! It's still your fault!"
Despite his harsh words and his fierce glare, Midoriya felt his heart flutter at Bakugou accepting his help.
"Let's go to the dorms, I have a med kit there with bandages," Midoriya smiled kindly and Bakugou didn't object for once.
Bakugou was relaxing on the couch downstairs when Midoriya plopped down next to him, smiling brightly.
"Go away! Everywhere I go, you show up!" Bakugou shouted.
"How are you feeling? Does your leg still hurt? Do you need help climbing the stairs?"
"Here," Midoriya smiled and shoved a cup of steaming tea at Bakugou. "I made tea for you! Hydration is important!"
Bakugou reluctantly took a sip and spit it back into the cup. "What the fuck was that?!"
"I don't know…" Midoriya laughed nervously.
"What does that mean? How the hell do you know what kind of tea you gave me?"
"It's kind of a funny story actually…we ran out of tea so I grabbed some leaves off one of the trees on campus and put them in water…"
"You're dead!" Bakugou shouted and Midoriya leapt off of the couch, racing into the kitchen area.
"You gave me dirty leaf water!" Bakugou snapped, nearly running into Kirishima, who was carrying a stack of dirty dishes from dinner.
"Can you guys not run in here?" Kirishima asked.
"Tell him that I'm really sorry!" Midoriya begged, grabbing Kirishima and forcing him between the two.
"Dude, don't use me as a human shield!"
"Tell Deku to show me what tree it was so I can force him to eat each leaf one by one!"
"Leave me out of this," Kirishima laughed, resuming his chores as he washed the dishes.
"At least let me make you some warm milk to help you sleep!" Midoriya cried.
"I'll tell you where you could shove your stupid milk!"
"Bakugou! That's inappropriate!" Iida reminded him loudly, he had been too busy studying at the table to notice their antics before.
"You really shouldn't be running with a bad leg," Kirishima said, shaking his head with worry as he watched Bakugou chase Midoriya around the table.
Midoriya had forgotten about his leg and came to a sudden halt, struggling to catch his breath. "Okay, let's call a truce! You're hurt and you shouldn't be running around!"
"You're just scared that I'm gonna beat the shit out of you!"
"No violence," Kirishima told him and Bakugou tried to casually lean against the wall to avoid putting weight on his leg, wincing slightly.
"My leg is fine, idiot!"
"Sure it is, man."
"Shut up! I'm going to bed!" Bakugou yelled, trying his best to hide his pain as he walked halfway up the stairs. He stopped and spoke to Midoriya without turning around. "Come on, Deku. Bring an ice pack to my room."
"I can bring milk, too!" Midoriya offered, beaming.
"Don't make it shitty! I can't trust your stupid ass after the tea!"
Midoriya nodded and saluted loyally, smiling brightly. "I won't disappoint you!"
"There," Midoriya smiled, placing the bag of frozen peas on Bakugou's leg and propping it up on a pillow.
Bakugou flinched and tried to hide his pain as he sipped from a cup of warm milk. "It's just a scrape, you idiot."
"It's still bothering you, right? You should be careful."
"Stop fussing over me!"
"Okay, okay!" Midoriya laughed then raced to the sliding glass door that lead to the balcony. He walked outside and looked around wildly, then closed the door. He locked the door quickly and Bakugou rolled his eyes.
"What are you doing, dumbass?"
"I had to make sure there were no villains lurking around outside."
"Yeah, because the highly trained pro heroes on campus wouldn't know if there were."
"I'm just looking out for you," Midoriya explained, then put on his most stern face. "You should lock your door every night."
"I will! Are you gonna leave now? I'm tired!"
"Yeah, I'll leave but first," Midoriya rolled Bakugou's chair beside his bed and pulled out a childrens' book.
"Don't tell me that is what I think it is."
"All Mights' Adventures! The first book from the series that we read together when we were little!"
"So? Why do I care?"
"I'm gonna read you a bedtime story!"
"Now you're pushing it!"
"I know, I know! I'll leave now," Midoriya smiled and opened the door, halting at the threshold. "Goodnight."
"Yeah, yeah. Just leave already," Bakugou grumbled, grabbing his pillow from behind his head and covering his face with it.
Midoriya giggled and closed the door gently.
Bakugou opened his eyes and yawned. It was pitch black in his room except the pale slivers of moonlight that escaped through the glass door. He stumbled towards the other door and tripped over something.
"What the hell?"
Bakugou crawled towards the object that had caused him to fall and reached out curiously. He was shocked when he found that the thing was warm and soft. He squinted in the darkness and racked his brain for what it might be. Two eyes suddenly revealed themselves in front of him, wide and green.
"The fuck?!" Bakugou cried, backing away quickly.
Midoriya screamed at the red eyes he saw in front of him in the darkness, still groggy from being woken up.
"Stop screaming, Deku! It's just me, you dumbass!"
"Oh! Hey, Kacchan," Midoriya smiled sleepily, blinking at him with his usual innocence.
"What are you doing out here?"
"I was...guarding your room in case something happened. You know, with the villain league still at large. I wanted to protect you."
"I fucking stepped on you!"
"You did?" Midoriya laughed, he was a deep sleeper and hadn't even noticed.
Bakugou shook his head and hated how amused he was by Midoriya's devotion to protecting him.
"You're crazy, aren't you?" He asked, punching him on his arm, gentle enough to be playful. "I'm going to the bathroom and you better be gone by the time I come back."
Midoriya yawned and nodded as he struggled to push himself to his feet sleepily, but when Bakugou returned he found him in the same place.
"What are you still doing here, nerd?" Bakugou asked, walking past and opening his door.
"I...I want to stay if that's okay with you. I'll just stay out here and be quiet," Midoriya mumbled quietly.
Bakugou sighed and turned, kneeling in front of Midoriya. "Stop being stupid."
"I just want you to be safe...every time I try to sleep, I see you getting kidnapped again. I just want you to know that you're safe at all times...I don't know what I'd do without you," Midoriya said, his eyes sparkling with worry and another emotion that Bakugou couldn't determine.
"Geez, Deku. I knew that you were all worried and shit about me, but I never thought it affected you that much..."
"Of course I'm worried! You're my friend," Midoriya smiled and Bakugou hoped that it was too dark to see that he was blushing.
"Okay, I'll let you sleep. I just don't know how I'll sleep knowing that villains could kidnap you again…" Midoriya mumbled.
"Stop worrying," Bakugou said. "I'll be there in the morning for you to annoy."
Midoriya giggled, his eyes shining. "Goodnight, Kacchan! I'm looking forward to annoying you!"
"Kacchan!" Midoriya cried, waving to Bakugou and beaming.
"Ten feet away!" Bakugou shouted, holding the butter knife he was using on his toast in the air.
"I won't make you get hurt this time, I promise!" Midoriya pleaded, but still stepped back a foot.
"Tell that to my forehead and leg!" Bakugou yelled, gesturing to his Midoriya-caused-injuries from the day before.
"I said I was sorry!"
"I'll stab you!" Bakugou held the knife up higher and Midoriya tried to not laugh.
"What would a morning in the dorms be without Bakugou threatening Midoriya?" Jirou quipped.
"Okay, we're taking the knife away from you," Kirishima said, taking the butter knife away from Bakugou and Midoriya silently thanked him.
"Bakugou should be banned from having knives ever," Kaminari pointed out. "It should be a law."
"Shut up! All of you!" Bakugou snapped, standing up and washing his plate off.
"Wait for me!" Midoriya cried, cramming toast in his mouth as he hurried after him.
He found Bakugou waiting for him at the bottom of the steps and wondered if he was dreaming.
"Kacchan! You actually waited for me?"
"Don't make such a big deal, okay?" Bakugou shouted, then remembered their conversation last night and how much Midoriya cared about him. "How could I leave without my bodyguard?"
"K-Kacchan?" Midoriya sobbed, staring at him with wide eyes.
"What are you crying about now?"
"Are we friends now?"
"I...I don't have friends, only enemies and people I happen to hate less than everyone else!"
"You hate me less than everyone else?"
"Aww, that's so sweet, Kacchan!" Midoriya cried, tears rolling down his cheeks. Midoriya wrapped his arms around Bakugou's neck, resting his chin on his shoulder.
"...what are you doing?" Bakugou asked, feeling awkward and wanting to push Midoriya away.
"I'm hugging you..." Midoriya mumbled, nervous and wondering if he should start running from Bakugou's wrath soon. He had acted without thinking and regretted it.
"This is too close, didn't I say to stay ten feet away?" Bakugou asked, feeling his face burning up.
Midoriya laughed and Bakugou's heartbeat caught his attention. "Your heart is beating fast, Kacchan."
"Shut up! I'm just...just not used to this kind of thing, okay?" Bakugou mumbled, his face on fire and he feeling as if he was going to explode.
"This is so embarrassing…"
He heard the click of a phone camera and turned his head. Kaminari stood with his phone in hand, surrounded by his classmates. Jirou giggled and Kirishima grinned.
Bakugou pushed Midoriya off of him and hoped that no one could see how much he was blushing.
"We were trying to walk to class. Sorry to intrude, man," Kirishima said.
"Shut up! You didn't interrupt anything, dumbass!" Bakugou yelled. He turned to Kaminari, who swallowed hard. "Delete that picture!"
"I'm not scared of your empty threats," Kaminari laughed and Bakugou glared at him.
He tried to snatch Kaminari by his shirt collar but Kirishima put himself between the two boys.
"Hey, calm down," Kirishima told Bakugou firmly.
"Delete it or I'll blow your ass up!" Bakugou shouted at Kaminari.
"Fine, I deleted it," Kaminari said, tapping a button on his phone.
"Asshole," Bakugou snapped, wheeling around and trudging to the school building.
As he walked, he realized that he was only mad because they interrupted the hug, which he enjoyed very much.
"Wait, Kacchan!" Midoriya cried, chasing after his friend.
"Don't follow me!"
"There are tons of bushes around, a villain could be lurking anywhere!"
Bakugou turned around to glare at him, but his heart softened at the sight of him. Midoriya looked determined, his small fists clenched and his green eyes gleaming. He seemed ready to beat up any villain that dared to touch Bakugou, to Bakugou's amusement.
"Hey," Bakugou said carefully. "I appreciate it."
"Huh?" Midoriya asked, his eyes widening. It wasn't like Bakugou to say anything remotely kind, especially not to him.
"You heard me! Thanks for trying to protect me and stuff, it's annoying but it's...nice. So I appreciate it, okay?"
"Okay! I promised that I would always protect you!" Midoriya nodded, smiling brightly.
"I don't need protection," Bakugou mumbled, turning around.
"But you like having me around?" Midoriya asked hopefully.
"Of course not!"
Midoriya laughed and Bakugou stuffed his hands in his pockets.
"I'll protect you too, you know!"
"Really? That's nice of you!"
"Shut up! I wasn't trying to be nice!"
"But you were!"
"I feel safer already," Midoriya smiled at Bakugou and he blushed.
"Stop being so stupid, it's not a big deal," Bakugou said, but Midoriya knew that it was.
Midoriya was glad to have Bakugou in his life and felt warm at the thought of Bakugou caring about him. He knew that there was a long road ahead on their journey of becoming heroes, but he felt better having Bakugou at his side.
"We'll take care of each other and save people together!" Midoriya announced, smiling.
"That sounds boring, I just wanna kill some villains," Bakugou snapped, but when Midoriya wasn't looking, he smiled.
