That Which Holds Us Together
Each art piece has two versions, with and without text. The text version contains a quote from the story that was my inspiration for the piece, and hopefully the art reflects it. I've also included links to the fullsized versions of the textless art, so you can see all the details better if you want :)
The Title Banner
I wanted the title piece to show both Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji being happy, since in the story Wei Wuxian especially has a lot to go through. Putting Cloud Recesses in the background was an easy choice, but I struggled a lot with finding the extra details to add to the image. I ended up using white silhouettes of cranes in flight, as cranes are a symbol of several good things in China, including peace and harmony, something I wished for the pairing :) The other symbol I used is one form of Double Happiness, which is to wish people good luck and happiness, and is used, among other things, at weddings :)
With the title text I wanted to try something different, with the words making sort of a winding path that eventually leads them together again :)
Wei Wuxian and A-Yuan
The first story snippet featured A-Yuan and Wei Wuxian during a night hunt, and I wanted to bring that feel of darkness and danger into the art, as well as show Wei Wuxian's determination to protect A-Yuan. I chose a bamboo forest for the setting, and while I don't know if there was a full moon that night, I think it always makes for a good background :)
Wei Wuxian and Lan Xichen
The second snippet was a scene with Lan Xichen and Wei Wuxian, with Lan Xichen helping the other after he has been injured. I wanted to show a warm, caring Lan Xichen, and a slightly lost Wei Wuxian, since he's not always best at asking for help from others and tries to handle everything on is own :) He is lucky to have not only Lan Wangji, but other people around who only want the best for him ^_^
Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji
The third snippet was a wonderful scene with Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji, where Wei Wuxian finally shares something about where he was during the time he was lost, and why some things still scare him. I wanted to show the warmth of that, so even though the picture is mainly blue, hope is blooming in the shape of a lotus flower slowly opening to the world, just like Wei Wuxian is opening his thoughts and heart to Lan Wangji.
Working on these pictures was certainly a challenge, and a lot of that had to do with their long hair :D Sometimes the quality of the source picture is not the best, so I had to fix a lot of hair that was just a mess of coloured blobs O_O It was also interesting trying to find some element that was unique to each picture, like the symbols for the title banner, the bloodspray on the nighthunt pic, the Gusu Lan emblem on the Lan Xichen pic, and the lotus and subtle ripples of water on the image of them hugging.
Hopefully the images still feel as parts of a whole, forming in their own small way a story for you to see. But to get the full picture, please go read Music Plotter's wonderful story, and leave her some love :)
