I Thought You Were Dead!

Work Text:

It was a quiet morning as Jin Dacheng and Jiang Yuelou sat in the conference room, both men discussing the logistics of their undercover mission to infiltrate one of the largest triads involved in one of the most prominent opium dens in Jing City as a new member.  They had pretty much everything figured out but in this meeting they were discussing one very important question: whether or not to tell Chen Yuzhi about the undercover mission.

“I still think that we should tell him…it’s not like he’s going to tell anyone” Jin Dacheng grumbled.  Jiang Yuelou shook his head.

“No one else can know about this.  Only you and I can know” he argued.  Jin Dacheng looked at him incredulously.

“You’re seriously not going to tell Dr. Chen about this plan?” he asked.  Jiang Yuelou shook his head.

“No, I’m not going to tell him” he replied.  Jin Dacheng huffed.

“Don’t you know how bad of an idea this is?  What happens if something happens to you?!  What am I going to tell him?!” he exclaimed.  Jiang Yuelou rolled his eyes.

“Nothing’s going to happen to me” he assured.  Jin Dacheng gave him a look.

“Jiang Yuelou, you do realize that to do this mission and to go undercover, you’re going to have to die right?  And do you know what that means?!  IT MEANS I’M GOING TO HAVE TO TELL CHEN YUZHI THAT YOU DIED!” he shouted.  Jiang Yuelou blinked before the weight of Jin Dacheng’s words hit him and his eyes widened.

“Shit” he hissed.  Jin Dacheng huffed.

“That seems like an accurate response” he grumbled before he looked at Jiang Yuelou.

“What are we going to do?” he asked.  Jiang Yuelou sighed.

“I don’t know…I didn’t think about that…” he murmured.  Jin Dacheng looked at him with wide eyes.

“You didn’t…JIANG YUELOU!” he shouted.  Jiang Yuelou huffed as he looked over at him.

“Just lie” he stated.  Jin Dacheng glared at him.

“It’s not that easy to lie to Chen Yuzhi; he’s like a fucking human lie detector” he argued before he sighed.

“If I tell him that you died, he’s probably going to want to see your body” he stated.  Jiang Yuelou nodded.

“Then let him see my body” he replied.  Jin Dacheng shook his head as he pointed at him.

“No, see, that’s where we’re going to run into a problem.  Since he’s a doctor, he’s going to want to check your body to make sure you’re actually dead” he stated.  Jiang Yuelou groaned and ran a hand through his hair.

“Fuck” he grumbled before he looked at Jin Dacheng.

“Fine, then don’t let him see my body.  Why don’t we give him an article of clothing?  Make it stained with blood or something” he stated.  Jin Dacheng looked at him with wide eyes before he sighed and shook his head.

“Isn’t that just a bit cruel?  What about Keying?” he asked, his voice soft.  Jiang Yuelou’s eyes widened before he groaned.

“When you give Chen Yuzhi the article of clothing…just tell him to not show Keying.  I’m…I don’t want to do that to her” he whispered.  Jin Dacheng looked at him before he sighed.

“Fine…but you owe me big for this.  I don’t like lying to Chen Yuzhi, even if it’s for a mission.  I don’t think it’s right” he murmured.  Jiang Yuelou nodded.

“I know…but I want him and Keying to be safe.  That’s why only you and I can know” he declared.  Jin Dacheng looked at him before he huffed.

“You’re gonna be sleeping on the couch for the next month for this, I hope you know that” he murmured.  Jiang Yuelou sighed.

“Yeah…yeah, I figured” he murmured.  Both men then looked at each other before they both sighed; this was going to be hard for both of them.

A few weeks later, as Chen Yuzhi was sitting at his desk, working on updating patient’s files, Jin Dacheng stepped into the clinic, a solemn look on his face.

“Dr. Chen” he called out.  Chen Yuzhi looked up from his paperwork and when he saw Jin Dacheng, he frowned.

“Vice-Commissioner Jin.  What are you doing here?” he asked, standing up from his desk and walking over to Jin Dacheng.  Jin Dacheng looked at him for a moment before he sighed and hung his head.

“Dr. Chen…I’m sorry” he whispered.  Chen Yuzhi frowned.

“What?  What are you sorry for?” he asked.  Jin Dacheng said nothing before he removed his hands from behind his back, holding out a charred leather jacket to him.  Chen Yuzhi frowned as he looked at the jacket.

“That…that looks like Yuelou’s jacket” he murmured before he looked up at Jin Dacheng with wide eyes.

“Yuelou…what happened?  Jin Dacheng, what happened?  Where’s Jiang Yuelou?” he demanded, panic entering his voice.  Jin Dacheng shook his head.

“He was out on a case and…and something went wrong.  When the men came back, this…this was all they could find” he whispered.  Chen Yuzhi looked at him with wide eyes before he blinked.

“Jiang Yuelou…Jiang Yuelou’s dead?” he whispered.  Jin Dacheng nodded.

“I’m sorry” he whispered.  Chen Yuzhi shook his head.

“No.  No, you’re lying.  You’re lying, he’s not dead.  He’s not” he argued before he glared at Jin Dacheng.

“Where’s his body?  I want to see for myself” he growled.  Jin Dacheng’s eyes widened and he quickly reached out, placing a hand on Chen Yuzhi’s shoulder, stopping him.

“Dr. Chen, there was no way he could have survived an explosion like that” he murmured.  Chen Yuzhi shook his head.

“This is Jiang Yuelou we’re talking about, Jin Dacheng!  It would literally take God himself to kill the man!” he shouted.  Jin Dacheng sighed.

“Dr. Chen…” he started when Chen Yuzhi shook his head, tears streaming down his face.

“What am I going to tell Keying?” he whimpered.  Jin Dacheng looked at him with compassion in his eyes before he held out Jiang Yuelou’s tattered jacket to him.

“Maybe don’t show this to Keying” he murmured.  Chen Yuzhi sniffled and looked at the jacket before he reached out with shaking hands, taking it from him before hugging it to his chest, burying his face in it.

“I really am sorry, Dr. Chen” Jin Dacheng whispered before he turned and walked out of the clinic, heading over to a figure that was standing next to a phonebooth that was near the clinic.

“You owe me” he hissed.  The figure, Jiang Yuelou, said nothing and just nodded instead, his eyes never once leaving Chen Yuzhi’s clinic.  Jin Dacheng then huffed before he turned and walked off, Jiang Yuelou staying behind to watch as Chen Yuzhi hugged his charred jacket tightly to his chest, burying his face in it before he collapsed to his knees.  Jiang Yuelou’s eyes widened and he took a step forward, wanting to comfort the young doctor, but he remembered that he was supposed to be dead, so he unfortunately had to hang back and just watch Chen Yuzhi’s shoulders shake as he sobbed into Jiang Yuelou’s jacket.  Jiang Yuelou felt tears come to his eyes and he quickly turned away, disappearing into the crowd of people before his urge to comfort Chen Yuzhi took off and he blew the entire mission.

Later that evening, when Chen Yuzhi returned home, Keying was waiting for him on the couch, petting the ragdoll cat that normally came over every day for food.  When she saw him, her eyes widened and she smiled brightly as she put the cat down before hopping off the couch and walking over to him.

“Gege!” she greeted.  Chen Yuzhi looked at her and when she looked into his eyes and noticed how red they looked, she frowned.

“Gege?  What’s wrong?” she asked before she noticed the charred leather jacket in his arms.

“Hey…isn’t that gege’s jacket?  Why is it burnt?” she asked, looking up at Chen Yuzhi.  Chen Yuzhi just looked at her, tears filling his eyes as he knelt down, placing the jacket to the side before he looked at her.

“Keying…Jiang Yuelou…he—” he started before he looked away, tears streaming down his cheeks.  Keying’s eyes widened in realization and she shook her head.

“No…no…gege…he’s…he’s not” she whimpered.  Chen Yuzhi looked at her and he shook his head.

“I’m sorry Keying” he whispered.  Keying shook her head again, this time shaking it vigorously.

“No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no!” she screamed, causing Chen Yuzhi to pull her in for a hug, holding her tightly.

“Shh, shh…shhh” he soothed, gently petting her hair as Keying clung to him, burying her face in his neck.

         “No…gege…” she sobbed.

“Hush…hush…” Chen Yuzhi hushed, still hugging her tightly.  Keying continued to sob into his neck, causing him to sigh before he picked up Keying, carrying her into his bedroom.  He then sat down on the edge of his bed, rocking her from side to side like he used to when she was little as she continued to sob, gently stroking her hair.

“Shhh…shhh…” he soothed, trying his best to try and comfort her but it was hard; Jiang Yuelou meant the world to them and to have him just…ripped out of their lives was just…just too much.  Chen Yuzhi then took a shuddering breath before he laid down, still holding Keying in his arms as they slowly fell asleep, tear stains on their cheeks.

A few days later, after Chen Yuzhi told Keying about what had happened with Jiang Yuelou, as Chen Yuzhi was heading to his clinic, he swore he saw someone who looked like Jiang Yuelou walking just a few feet in front of him.

“Jiang Yuelou?” he breathed before he quickly started after the man.

“Jiang Yuelou?” he called out, but the man didn’t respond and just continued to walk away.  Chen Yuzhi shook his head as he rushed after the man.

“Jiang Yuelou!” he exclaimed.  The man didn’t even turn around and kept walking, causing Chen Yuzhi to follow after him.  Both men continued to walk through the crowded street, Chen Yuzhi struggling to get closer to the man but more people continued to get in between them, widening the gap until Chen Yuzhi could no longer see the man.  He then stopped walking, his eyes widening as tears began to well up in them.

“Jiang Yuelou” he whispered.  He stood there for a moment before he noticed the man heading down an alley, causing his eyes to widen before he quickly pushed through the crowd, rushing after the man, following him down the alley, only to find a dead end.  His eyes widened and he looked around in shock and surprise before he let out a soft sob.  He looked around once more before he took a deep breath and shook his head, heading out of the alley and back to his clinic.  He then unlocked the doors to his clinic and pushed them open, looking around his clinic before he walked over to his desk and sat down, placing his medical kit down on the ground beside him.  He sat there for a moment, lips trembling as tears welled up in his eyes before he covered his face with his hands and began to sob.  As he sobbed, he didn’t notice a figure leaning against the outside of his clinic, looking inside with tears streaming down his cheeks.

“Yuzhi…I’m sorry” he whispered before he pushed himself off and walked away, disappearing into the crowd.

A few weeks later, as Keying was fast asleep in her bed, a figure quietly opened the window that led to her room and slipped inside.  The figure then quietly walked over to her bed and turned on the beside lamp, shining light onto her sleeping form.  The figure smiled fondly at her before they reached out and gently pet her hair, brushing her bangs out of her face.  At the gentle touch, Keying stirred, causing the figure’s eyes to widen and take a step back as Keying rolled over and blinked sleepily.

“Who’s there?” she murmured.  The figure said nothing and Keying squinted, her vision still blurred with sleep, but she could tell that there was someone in her room, causing her eyes to widen.  She then opened her mouth to scream when the figure quickly put a finger to his mouth, hushing her.  Keying shook her head and opened her mouth to scream again when the figure rushed forward and covered her mouth with his.

“A-Ying, shh.  Don’t wake your brother” he whispered.  At the sound of his voice, Keying’s eyes widened and she looked up at the man, recognition flooding her eyes.  The figure then stepped bad, removing his hand from her mouth as Keying quickly threw her covers off and slipped out of bed, rushing over to him, throwing her arms around his waist.

“Gege” she whimpered.  The figure, Jiang Yuelou, smiled softly as he wrapped his arms around her and hugged her tightly.

“Hi baby” he whispered.  Keying then let out a sob as she hugged Jiang Yuelou tightly.

“Gege said you died…” she sobbed.  Jiang Yuelou sighed.

“I know…” he murmured.  Keying then looked up at him in confusion.

“But…you’re not dead?” she asked.  Jiang Yuelou laughed softly as he picked Keying up and held her in his arms and walked over to her bed, sitting down on the edge of it, Keying sitting in his lap.

“No, sweetheart, I’m not dead.  I just faked my death” he explained.  Keying frowned.

“Why?” she asked.  Jiang Yuelou sighed as he reached up and stroked Keying’s hair.

“Because I’m currently undercover” he answered before he looked at Keying.

“You cannot tell your brother you saw me.  Do you understand?” he asked.  Keying blinked before she nodded.

“I understand” she answered.  Jiang Yuelou smiled and stroked her hair.

“Good girl” he praised.  Keying then frowned again.

“Why are you here then?” she asked.  Jiang Yuelou smiled fondly before he leaned down and pressed a kiss to her forehead.

“Because I missed you.  And I wanted to see you” he explained.  Keying said nothing before she snuggled up against him, wrapping her arms around him.  Jiang Yuelou sighed as he hugged her tightly, gently stroking her hair.

“I missed you too, gege…but not as much as gege misses you” she murmured.  Jiang Yuelou frowned as he continued to gently stroke Keying’s hair.

“What do you mean?” he whispered.  Keying sniffled.

“I hear him sometimes…at night.  He sleeps in your charred jacket and cries himself to sleep almost every night…” she murmured before she looked up at Jiang Yuelou.

“He really misses you” she murmured.  Jiang Yuelou was quiet before he sighed heavily and leaned down, pressing a kiss to Keying’s forehead.

“I miss him too.  I’ll be home soon” he promised.  Keying looked up at him.

“You promise?” she whispered.  Jiang Yuelou nodded.

“Yes, baby.  I promise” he murmured.  Keying smiled sleepily as she snuggled against him, resting her head on his chest as she shut her eyes.  Jiang Yuelou smiled and gently held her, stroking her hair and humming softly as he rocked back and forth, making sure that she was fast asleep before he stood up and carefully placed her down, tucking her in before pressing a kiss to her forehead.

“Sleep well, baby” he whispered, stroking her hair before he reached out and turned off the bedside lamp.  He then stepped away from her bed and turned, about to head out the window when he paused and looked towards Keying’s bedroom door.  He took a step towards the door before he paused and shook his head.

“No” he whispered, stopping himself before he turned back towards the window, only to pause again.

“Fuck it” he hissed, turning and heading towards Keying’s bedroom door, opening it before slipping out, heading to Chen Yuzhi’s bedroom.  As he quietly opened the door and slipped inside, he heard the soft sounds of sobbing, making his eyes widen before he quickly walked over to Chen Yuzhi’s bed and turned on the bedside lamp.  As he looked down at the young doctor, his heart clenched in pain; Chen Yuzhi was curled up in a fetal position, wrapped in Jiang Yuelou’s charred jacket, his shoulders shaking as he sobbed.  Jiang Yuelou hated seeing his doctor cry and when he couldn’t take it any longer, he quickly reached out and bundled Chen Yuzhi into his arms before sitting down on the edge of the bed, holding him tightly as he rocked back and forth.

“Shhh…shhh…shhh Yuzhi” he soothed, reaching up to gently stroke Chen Yuzhi’s hair.  Chen Yuzhi immediately curled into him, reaching up and clutching at Jiang Yuelou’s arm as he continued to sob.

“Jiang Yuelou” he whimpered, not realizing that Jiang Yuelou was there, alive, and was holding him.  Jiang Yuelou didn’t reply, not wanting to wake Chen Yuzhi up and cause him to realize that Jiang Yuelou wasn’t actually dead.  Instead, he just held the young doctor, holding him tightly as he ran his fingers through his hair.  Chen Yuzhi continued to cling to Jiang Yuelou, soft sobs shaking his shoulders as Jiang Yuelou held him, humming softly.  Jiang Yuelou continued to hold him, humming softly as he ran his hand through his hair, until Chen Yuzhi’s shoulders stopped shaking and he finally relaxed, nestled in Jiang Yuelou’s arms.  Jiang Yuelou looked down at his doctor, who now looked so peaceful, and smiled softly before he reached up and wiped away the tears from his eyes, leaning down to press a kiss to his forehead.  He knew that he should just leave, since it was dangerous for both Keying and Chen Yuzhi to be there, but he missed the two of them terribly and he wanted to make sure that Chen Yuzhi got a full, good nights worth of sleep, so he scooted himself onto the bed, back resting against the headboard as he held Chen Yuzhi in his arms, soon drifting off to sleep.

The next morning, when Chen Yuzhi awoke, he found that the night before was probably the first night in a long time where he had actually slept through the night and had felt…well rested when he woke up.

‘What a weird dream…it felt like Jiang Yuelou was with me’ he thought to himself before he got out of bed, removing the charred jacket and placing it reverently on his bed before he padded into Keying’s bedroom, walking over to his little sister’s bed and giving her shoulder a shake.

“Keying…come on sweetheart.  It’s time to wake up” he murmured.  Keying stirred before she rolled over, blinking up at him.

“Gege?” she murmured.  Chen Yuzhi smiled and stroked her hair.

“Come on, sweetheart.  It’s time to get up” he murmured.  Keying yawned and sat up, rubbing her eyes.

“I had the strangest dream…” she murmured.  Chen Yuzhi looked over at her and raised an eyebrow.

“Oh yeah?” he asked.  Keying nodded.

“I dreamt that gege came to visit…that he held me and rocked me back and forth, humming softly” she murmured.  Chen Yuzhi blinked before he laughed softly.

“Funny…I had the same dream” he mused, tears coming to his eyes.  He then shook his head, clearing his throat before he looked at Keying.

“Come on, let’s go get ready for school, okay?” he asked.  Keying nodded and slipped out of bed, both she and Chen Yuzhi heading out of her bedroom to get ready for the day.

After Keying and Chen Yuzhi got ready for the day, they headed out of their house and towards the clinic, but on their way to the clinic, a person came up behind Chen Yuzhi and pressed a gun to his back, making him and Keying freeze.

“If you don’t want me to blow your little sister’s brains out, Dr. Chen, I suggest you do what I say” the man whispered.  Chen Yuzhi gritted his teeth and snarled.

“I’m not going anywhere unless you let Keying go” he hissed.  The man huffed.

“And what if I don’t?” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi chuffed.

“Then I’ll make a scene…there are always cops watching” he replied.  The man tsked as he moved the gun from digging into Chen Yuzhi’s back to being pointed at the back of Keying’s head, making the little girl yelp.

“Or I could just shoot her right here, right now” he mused.  Chen Yuzhi’s eyes widened before he shook his head.

“No.  No, don’t hurt her.  I’ll go with you, I promise.  Just…don’t hurt her” he begged.  The man nodded.

“I won’t…but both of you will have to come with me” he declared.  Chen Yuzhi took a deep breath before he sighed.

“Fine” he whispered.  The man nodded.

“Good man” he agreed before he gave both of them a rough shove, the gun still pointed at the back of Keying’s head as they continued walking until they came upon a black car.  The man then stepped forward and opened the back door, motioning to it with his chin.

“Get in” he ordered.  Chen Yuzhi nodded and carefully helped Keying into the car before he slid in after her, the man slamming the door shut before he got into the front passenger side, the car soon speeding off.  However, like Chen Yuzhi said, there was always cops watching and Jiang Yuelou was definitely watching, due to the fact since he had been keeping an eye on Chen Yuzhi and Keying since he “died”.  He watched the car speed off before he turned and ran to the Jingcheng Police Department, rushing up the stairs to Jin Dacheng’s office, bursting in.  Jin Dacheng looked up with wide eyes but when he realized who it was, he huffed.

“Do you ever fucking knock?” he grumbled.

“We have a problem” Jiang Yuelou panted, ignoring his question.  Jin Dacheng raised an eyebrow.

“Problem?” he repeated.  Jiang Yuelou sighed heavily.

“Chen Yuzhi and Keying were kidnapped” he declared.  Jin Dacheng’s eyes widened.

“What?  Why?” he breathed.  Jiang Yuelou shook his head.

“I have no idea.  All I know is that you need to get them back” he ordered.  Jin Dacheng frowned and didn’t say anything, making Jiang Yuelou look at him pleadingly.

“Jin Dacheng, please.  I can’t lose them” he begged.  Jin Dacheng looked at him before he sighed heavily.

“Fine.  Fine.  Again, you owe me for this” he growled, pointing a finger at him.  Jiang Yuelou smiled thankfully before he nodded.

“Alright.  Thank you.  Thank you” he breathed before he turned and rushed out of Jin Dacheng’s office.  Jin Dacheng watched him leave before he sighed and ran a hand through his hair.

“I don’t get paid enough for this” he grumbled.

In a warehouse down by the docs, Chen Yuzhi and Keying’s hands were bound behind their back before they were forced to their knees.  One of the triad members then walked over to Chen Yuzhi and yanked his hair, causing him to let out a hiss as his head was yanked back so he was looking up to see Lu Ka Si, the leader of the triad in charge of the largest opium den in Jing City, smirking at him.

“Dr. Chen…so nice to finally meet your acquaintance” he purred.  Chen Yuzhi snarled.

“What do you want with us?” he demanded.  Lu Ka Si chuckled.

“You’re a doctor, no?  You make medicine.  You’re the perfect distributor” he declared.  Chen Yuzhi’s eyes widened.

“You want me to help you distribute your opium through my medicine?!” he exclaimed.  Lu Ka Si chuckled again.

“Of course.  Your clinic is in the perfect area, you distribute pills to patients…it’s a win-win for everyone” he explained.  Chen Yuzhi shook his head.

“I’m not going to help you distribute your opium and hurt people!  I’m a doctor, I don’t hurt people, I save people” he hissed.  Lu Ka Si smirked.

“You may be able to save others, but you won’t be able to save your sister” he purred as  he pulled a gun out of the holster that was strapped to his hip and pointed it at Keying.  Both Keying and Chen Yuzhi’s eyes widened before Chen Yuzhi shook his head.

“No, no.  Please, don’t, don’t hurt her” he begged.  Lu Ka Si smirked again.

“Do as I say and maybe she won’t get hurt” he purred.  Chen Yuzhi gritted his teeth, just as the doors to the warehouse were slammed open and Jin Dacheng as well as the rest of the Jingcheng Police Department ran in, guns drawn.  Lu Ka Si growled and looked over his shoulder at him before he turned back to Chen Yuzhi and Keying, still pointing the gun at them, before he smirked.

“If I’m going down, then I’m taking your sister with me” he declared as he pulled the trigger.  Chen Yuzhi’s eyes widened.

“NO!” he shouted before he launched himself in front of Keying, taking the bullet for her.

“GEGE!” Keying screamed, eyes wide in horror.  Chen Yuzhi hissed in pain before he coughed, spraying blood, slowly fading in and out of consciousness.  He could barely keep his eyes open, but he could hear the sound of gunfire echoing around him as well as Keying sobbing behind him.

“Keying…don’t…don’t cry, sweetheart” he whispered as he began to fade into unconsciousness.  However, before he completely slipped away, he looked up and saw a figure bathed in sunlight walking towards him, a figure he thought he recognized.

“Jiang Yuelou?” he whispered and before he knew it, everything went black.

Two days later, when Chen Yuzhi finally awoke from his unconsciousness, he found himself in a hospital bed with Keying laying curled against him, her face buried in his side.  He smiled softly and reached over, gently stroking her hair until she stirred and lifted her head.

“Hmm?” she murmured before her eyes widened.

“Gege” she breathed, quickly sitting up.  Chen Yuzhi smiled softly.

“Hey sweetheart” he murmured.  Keying’s eyes then filled with tears as she shook her head.

“Why would you do that?  I already lost gege, I can’t lose you too!” she exclaimed.  Chen Yuzhi shook his head.

“Your life is more important than mine, Keying.  I don’t care if I die, but I do care if you do” he replied.  Keying sniffled.

“But if you die, who’s going to take care of me?” she whimpered.  Chen Yuzhi’s eyes widened slightly before he sighed.

“I’m sorry Keying.  I didn’t think that far ahead” he apologized.  Keying sniffled before she carefully laid down and wrapped her arms around Chen Yuzhi, giving him a squeeze.  Chen Yuzhi smiled and reached up, gently petting her hair as he sighed.

“What happened?  Where am I?” he asked, making Keying look up at him.

“Jin da-ge came in and saved us.  He and the police I think arrested everyone in the warehouse then rushed you here” she explained.  Chen Yuzhi frowned.

“But it felt like…someone was holding me…and telling me to hold on” he murmured.  Keying looked at him and bit her lip; he wasn’t exactly wrong.

As soon as Chen Yuzhi fell unconscious, the figure whom Chen Yuzhi saw, who was indeed Jiang Yuelou, rushed over and knelt down beside him, pulling him into his lap as he pressed a hand to the bullet wound.

“Yuzhi…Yuzhi, hold on.  Hold on, baby, hold on.  We’re gonna get you help.  You’re gonna be fine; you’re gonna be fine” he whispered before he looked up at Jin Dacheng, who was looking down at Lu Ka Si’s dead body, which Jiang Yuelou had put a bullet in.

“Jin Dacheng!  Get Yuzhi to a hospital.  Now!” he barked.  Jin Dacheng looked up at him and nodded before he motioned for two other officers to come over and take Chen Yuzhi from Jiang Yuelou.  Once Chen Yuzhi was taken from him, Jiang Yuelou rushed over to Keying and untied the ropes from around her wrist, pulling her in for a hug.

“I got you, baby.  You’re safe now.  You’re safe now” he promised, Keying burying her face in his neck.

“Gege” she whimpered.  Jiang Yuelou hushed her as he leaned down, pressing a kiss to her head.

“I got you, Keying.  I got you” he assured.  Keying wrapped her arms around him and let out a sob as Jiang Yuelou lifted her into his arms as he stood to his feet.

“Come on, baby.  Let’s go get you checked out too, okay?” he murmured.  Keying nodded and Jiang Yuelou turned, carrying her out of the warehouse as Jin Dacheng and his officers rounded up the triad members that they had arrested after Jiang Yuelou had shot Lu Ka Si.

“Maybe you were hearing things, gege” Keying murmured.  Chen Yuzhi sighed.

“Maybe” he agreed.  Just then, there was a knock on the door, making Chen Yuzhi and Keying look up to see Jin Dacheng poking his head into the room.

“Dr. Chen?” he called out.  Chen Yuzhi smiled softly.

“Vice-Commissioner Jin.  Come in” he replied.  Jin Dacheng nodded and stepped inside, walking over to him and Keying, looking down at them.

“How are you feeling?” he asked.  Chen Yuzhi sighed.

“I’m okay…my chest hurts, but I’m okay” he replied.  Jin Dacheng hummed before he sighed.

“You’re lucky to be alive, Dr. Chen” he murmured.  Chen Yuzhi laughed softly.

“I guess I have a guardian angel watching over me” he mused.  Jin Dacheng hummed before he and Keying shared a look; they knew exactly who Chen Yuzhi’s “guardian angel” was.  Jin Dacheng then sighed again before he reached out and patted Chen Yuzhi on the shoulder.

“Get some rest, Dr. Chen” he murmured.  Chen Yuzhi nodded, Jin Dacheng flashing him a small smile before he turned and headed out of the room, Keying snuggling against Chen Yuzhi as he let out a sigh, eyes soon slipping shut as sleep took him.

About a week later, as Chen Yuzhi was unlocking his clinic, a figure in a brown leather jacket, white Henley, black pants, and black boots pushed past him and plopped down on his desk, a small smirk on his face.  Chen Yuzhi blinked, stunned, before he looked up at whoever just pushed past him into his clinic.

“Excuse me, you can’t just—" he started when his eyes widened and his mouth fell open in shock.  Sitting before him on his desk was Jiang Yuelou, a soft and fond smile on his face, his arms crossed in front of him.  Jiang Yuelou then uncrossed his arms and hopped off his desk, slowly making his way over to Chen Yuzhi, stopping before the man, who looked at him with wide eyes and an open mouth.

“What’s wrong?  Dr. Chen doesn’t welcome me?” he asked softly.  Chen Yuzhi looked at him, stunned, before he shook his head.

“Jiang Yuelou?” he whispered.  Jiang Yuelou smiled a little wider.

“Hi baby” he replied.  Chen Yuzhi continued to stare at him before he threw his arms around Jiang Yuelou, burying his face in Jiang Yuelou’s neck as he let out a sob.  Jiang Yuelou smiled softly and wrapped his arms around Chen Yuzhi, reaching up to stroke the back of Chen Yuzhi’s hair.

“Shh…shh” he soothed.  Chen Yuzhi let out another sob, giving Jiang Yuelou a hard squeeze before he pulled back and looked Jiang Yuelou in the eyes.

“What are you doing here?!  Jin Dacheng told me you were DEAD!” he screamed.  Jiang Yuelou huffed.

“I don’t play hard to get; I play hard to get rid of” he declared.  Chen Yuzhi shook his head.

“What?” he exclaimed.  Jiang Yuelou then chuckled softly as he reached out, wiping away the tears from his eyes.

“I faked my death.  I never died” he explained.  Chen Yuzhi’s eyes widened and shook his head again before he reached out and grasped Jiang Yuelou by his jacket, giving him a hard shake.

“You…you…why didn’t you tell me?!” he screamed.  Jiang Yuelou looked at him and huffed as he reached up, gently cupping Chen Yuzhi by the back of his neck.

“Yuzhi, it would have been dangerous if you knew what I was doing” he argued.  Chen Yuzhi shook his head and let go of Jiang Yuelou’s jacket as he took a step away from him; Jiang Yuelou’s hand falling to his side.

“I don’t care!  We’re supposed to share things like this, Jiang Yuelou!  You can’t…you can’t just leave me in the dark!” he exclaimed as tears came to his eyes again.

“I…I cried for you…Jiang Yuelou.  Every night.  I really…I-I really—” he started before he let out a sob and he shook his head.

“I really thought you had died” he whimpered.  Jiang Yuelou looked at him with wide eyes but before he did anything else, he quickly walked over to the clinic doors and shut them before he walked back to Chen Yuzhi and cupped his face in his hands.

“Yuzhi…” he murmured before he leaned in and captured Chen Yuzhi’s lips with his.  Chen Yuzhi’s eyes widened and he let out a noise of surprise as Jiang Yuelou pulled away, looking at him with tears in his own eyes.

“I’m sorry, Yuzhi.  I should have told you.  I should…I should have let you know what I was doing before I went and did what I did.  I shouldn’t have…I shouldn’t have done that to you and Keying.  I’m sorry, baby.  I’m so sorry.  I shouldn’t have put you through that” he apologized as he wiped away the tears.  Chen Yuzhi sniffled and let out a wet laugh before he looked at Jiang Yuelou.

“I missed you.  So much” he whispered.  Jiang Yuelou smiled, tears in his eyes, before he leaned in and kissed Chen Yuzhi again.

“I missed you too” he replied as he pulled away.  He then took a deep breath before he looked into Chen Yuzhi’s eyes, gently stroking his cheeks.

“Forgive me, Yuzhi” he whispered.  Chen Yuzhi looked back at him and smiled fondly.

“Of course” he replied before he reached out and gently pinched Jiang Yuelou in the side, causing Jiang Yuelou to let out a cry of shock.

“Yuzhi!  Wha—” he started when Chen Yuzhi pointed at him.

“Don’t you ever do something like this again” he warned.  Jiang Yuelou smirked before he moved his hands from Chen Yuzhi’s face to his neck and waist, pulling him against him.  Chen Yuzhi gasped and clutched at Jiang Yuelou’s shoulders as Jiang Yuelou smiled devilishly at him.

“I wouldn’t dream of it, my love” he purred before he kissed Chen Yuzhi soundly on the lips.  Chen Yuzhi’s eyes widened again before he relaxed and moved his hands from Jiang Yuelou’s shoulders to around his neck, kissing him back.  The two men continued to kiss, their mouths moving against each other’s, before Chen Yuzhi pulled away, panting softly.

“Yuelou…I have patients” he whispered.  Jiang Yuelou hummed before he moved his hand from Chen Yuzhi’s neck and gently stroked Chen Yuzhi’s cheek.

“Okay” he agreed as he pulled away, straightening out Chen Yuzhi’s suit before he smiled slightly.

“I’ll see you tonight” he declared.  Chen Yuzhi blinked in surprise.

“You…you will?” he asked.  Jiang Yuelou smiled and nodded.

“Of course I will” he promised.  Chen Yuzhi nodded in agreement and Jiang Yuelou smiled before he leaned forward and kissed Chen Yuzhi on the nose.

“Bye” he whispered before he slipped past Chen Yuzhi and walked over to the clinic doors, opening them before slipping out, leaving Chen Yuzhi alone.  Chen Yuzhi watched him walk away before he huffed and shook his head.

“He’s lucky I love him” he murmured before he turned and began getting ready for the day.

Later that evening, after Chen Yuzhi was done with work, he headed out of the clinic, only to find Jiang Yuelou leaning against it, a soft smile on his face.

“Told you I’d see you tonight” he teased.  Chen Yuzhi tsked and gave Jiang Yuelou a gentle shove before he closed up the clinic, motioning for Jiang Yuelou to follow him as he headed home.  Jiang Yuelou nodded and pushed himself off of the clinic and walked over to him, both men walking side by side, their shoulders touching as if they couldn’t bear to be apart from each other any longer than they absolutely had to be.

When they returned to Chen Yuzhi’s house, Chen Yuzhi looked over at Jiang Yuelou.

“Just wait here for a moment” he instructed before he turned and pushed open the doors that led to his house, heading inside as Jiang Yuelou patiently waited outside.  Chen Yuzhi then walked over to where Keying was sitting, holding the ragdoll cat in her arms again.

“Keying” he called out, making Keying look up at him with wide eyes and a big smile.

“Gege!” she replied, placing the kitty down before she stood up and walked over to Chen Yuzhi, who smiled fondly at her.

“Keying, I have a surprise for you” he declared, causing Keying’s eyes to widen.

“Really?” she breathed.  Chen Yuzhi nodded.

“Mmhm.  Now, close your eyes” he instructed.  Keying quickly nodded and squeezed her eyes shut tightly as Chen Yuzhi turned and looked over at Jiang Yuelou, who was standing in the entrance of the gate, and smiled, nodding.  Jiang Yuelou smiled in return and quietly stepped inside, quietly closing the gate behind him before he continued to walk into the courtyard until he stopped about halfway, a soft smile on his face.  Chen Yuzhi nodded again before he stepped aside, allowing Jiang Yuelou to be within Keying’s line of vision.

“Okay, Keying.  Open your eyes” he whispered.  Keying then opened her eyes and when she saw Jiang Yuelou, her eyes widened and she gasped before she took off towards the man, throwing her arms around him and hugging him tightly as she nearly knocked him off his feet.

“Gege” she sobbed, burying her face in Jiang Yuelou’s chest.  Jiang Yuelou smiled and gently stroked her head, chuckling softly.

“Hey baby.  Did you miss me?” he whispered.  Keying looked up at him and nodded; even though she had seen him that one night when he came to visit and when he had come to save them in the warehouse, she still missed him dearly.  Jiang Yuelou smiled before he reached under Keying’s armpits and lifted her into his arms, holding her tightly.

“I missed you too, sweetheart” he murmured.  Keying threw her arms around him and hugged him, causing him to laugh before he looked over at Chen Yuzhi, who was leaning against the doorway, smiling fondly.  He smiled as well before he hefted Keying in his arms and walked over to Chen Yuzhi, pressing a soft kiss to his doctor’s lips.  When they pulled away, Jiang Yuelou smiled a little wider.

“I’m back” he greeted.  Chen Yuzhi smiled a little wider as well.

“Welcome home” he replied.  Jiang Yuelou smiled before he continued on into the house, Keying still held tightly in his arms.  Chen Yuzhi watched them walk into his house before he smiled and let out a little laugh as he followed behind after them.  Jiang Yuelou was home, their family was complete again, and that…that was all Chen Yuzhi ever wanted.
