Hungry Like the Wolf

Chapter Text

Scorpius's perspective

I’m done. I want school to be over! I don’t care anymore! We are currently just over halfway through exam season, but it feels like it’s never going to end. Everyone is stressed and none more so than Rose. These exams don’t really count for anything in the long run, but Rose is panicking, a lot. Merlin knows how bad she’ll be next year when we actually have our N.E.W.T.s, I just hope I’ll be able to calm her down a bit, so she doesn’t end up killing herself. I mean I know they are going to be stressful; I’ve even seen Fred and James revising and taking their exams seriously, but Rose gets so worked up about them. Too make matters worse we are currently in the middle of a heat wave, this means that when I’m trying to revise, I inevitably get distracted by Rose. She has taken to wearing shorts and vests to revise in and not much else. It is impossible to revise when Rose is sat next to me all legs, giving me flashes of her cleavage and biting her lip when she’s thinking. It is impossible to concentrate! So, when it is just the two of us revising, I’ve taken to taking my shirt off to distract her. It’s really just so much fun to see Rose loose concentration and try to focus back on work only to give up five minutes later. Plus, it means that Rose takes a break and relaxes which is an added bonus.

Al, Rose, Rachel, Emma and I are currently in and empty classroom revising for Charms. Rose is taking the lead explaining and sections that we’re struggling with, apparently, she finds teaching it helps her to remember it. We’ve been studying all morning and my head feels like it is going to explode, and by the looks of it everyone feels the same way.
“Can we take a break? I don’t think my brain has been working for the last twenty minutes!” Rachel groans.
“Fine with me. My head feels like is going to explode.” I add for good measure.
“Fine, ten-minute break.” Rose agrees collapsing into the chair next to me. I shift so I can wrap my arm her and Rose can use my shoulder as a pillow.
“So, are you guys ready for Remembrance Day?” Rachel asks. Since the battle of Hogwarts, 25 years ago, the 2nd May has become a day of remembrance, hence the name, everything shuts down, and then there is a gathering at Hogwarts of friends and family of those we lost. Though throughout the years it has become more of a propaganda tool meaning that anyone with enough money and influence can also get a ticket to the event. As it is held at Hogwarts the 6th and 7th years are allowed to attend. However, I can’t help but remember what side of the war my family was on. My being there is sure to upset a few people, even if my grandmother did lie to Voldemort. Focusing back on the conversation I find that it has moved on slightly onto what each of the girls is going to be wearing, while Al looks to be taking a nap on the next table.
“It’s just a weird dress code is all I’m saying!”
“I mean it’s not really, it’s just dress robes.”
“Yes, but while it’s not explicitly said it’s expected that we wear black or some ugly muted colour.”
“I don’t suit dark colours they wash me out!”
“Don’t be ridiculous. You’d look great in a black dress.”
“But everyone will be wearing black! I don’t want be just another girl in a black dress! I’ll just blend in!”
“And there’s the actual reason!”
“Emma if you want to go out with Fred just ask him!”
“I can’t do that!”
“Of course, you can!”
“And anyway, how have you not sorted out your dress yet? We don’t have another Hogsmeade trip till after exams are over.”
“I’m going to order a couple in and return the ones I don’t like.”
“Cutting it a bit fine?”
“Oh, Rose you worry too much.”

“I can’t believe we’re still coming last even after winning the Quidditch Cup.”
“Really? After all the pranks Fred and James have pulled this year?”
“But they always do that, and we won last year.”
“Barely, and we didn’t win by much.”
“We were only 12 points ahead but it wasn’t that bad.”
“Actually, I may have almost got caught a few days before the feast creating a swamp tunnel.” James mutters guiltily
“Of course, you did.” Al groans exasperatedly “Why don’t the two of you plan ahead more I mean if the Wolf can pull off equally elaborate pranks and never get caught then why can’t you two?”
“Because we like getting the recognition. That and we get accused of pranks that we didn’t commit anyway so we might as well have fun while we’re at it.” Fred grins.
“James, Ashley’s staring at you again.”
“Aren’t you going to do anything about it?”
“What do you want me to do?”
“I don’t know tell her to stop.”
“Look I’m just glad she’s not making shit up and is leaving me alone.”
“If she keeps mooning at you like that people will start to think something did happen.”
“Even she admitted that nothing happened!”
“And scandal travel faster than the truth. I doubt if half the school actually knows that it didn’t happen.”
“Sorry bro, I did my best but even I can’t work miracles.”
“Can we just stop talking about it?
“Fine, you ready for the real world? Only 5 more weeks left at Hogwarts.”
“Thank you, Lily. That’s a much better topic of convocation.” James groans
“You’re welcome. But seriously you do have a plan right.”
“Of course, I’m not an idiot. Uncle George is looking for people to work on the production line. So, I’m going to apply there and when a R and D position opens up, I’m going to apply for it with Fred. After all we’re a package deal.”
“Well that’s a given I doubt the two of you could function for more than three days without each other.”
“Exactly, and people never seem to last long in the R and D department so it won’t be long before we can apply for a junior position.” Apparently, they lose half of them because they don’t like being that near explosions. Some leave because they think the work is too childish and beneath them, and the rest seem to think that working for a joke shop will be easy then quit when they realise how much work is involved in creating each new product.
“Well, all that’s left is for you to pass your exams.”
“Ugh, I know charms is kicking my arse.” James groans.
“And then there’s the final prank.”
“Lily, how many times we won’t tell you what the final prank is going to be.”
“Oh, come on! Just a hint.”
“What about you Scorpius? Got a plan for after Hogwarts?”
“I will find out James!” Lily growls
“Sure, you will. Just like you have every year.” James laughs
“Anyway, Scorpius after Hogwarts figured it all out?”
“Well that’s still a year off! I don’t need a plan yet.”
“I’m beginning to see why you’re a Gryffindor. No planning.”
“Oh, fuck off.” Merlin, James can be a dick sometimes “I don’t know, I know I want to work outside, but I don’t know if I want to work with plants or animals.”
“Fair enough. What about you Lily still want to join the Holyhead harpies?”
“Hmmm not sure their management has been pretty shit recently, maybe Appleby Arrows.”
“You can’t try for Appleby! Mum would kill you.” Al exclaims
“Oh please, she’ll just be happy that I’m following in her footsteps. And anyway, I have a few years before I can even try out for a team.”

“Ugh why did you we have to spend so much time on Inferi? The pictures are horrific.”
“Yeah the pictures are the problem. Never mind the fact that they used to be people.”
“I know it’s just that every time I go to check a fact the pictures are just there. Their eyes look like they’re staring at me.”
“Yeah I know what you mean. I don’t get why this was the topic that Patterson seemed to enjoy the most.”
“I know. Honestly I don’t get why she applied for this job she clearly doesn’t want to teach and hates kids.”
“She just hates everyone.”
“Al, don’t be mean.”
“I’m serious have you ever even seen her smile? Or just not look angry?”
“Oh, come on I bet she’s just here so she can get some work experience. It’s not like anyone expects her to last past this year. Thanks to the curse.”
“You know what I think you might be right.”
“Come on what’s another topic we could revise?” I ask getting us back on track
“Well there’s the curses that give you an incurable disease that has no counter curse.”
“How about Dementors”
“Al! Are you just going to pass on everything?”
“Are you hungry?” I interrupt, before this can go on too long, he can never work when he’s hungry.
“Ok how about this we go get food then come back and carry on working.”
“But we’re not scheduled for a break for fifteen minutes!”
“Rose even if we work till then Al not going to get any work done and will probably just distract us instead.”
“Come on Rose we can go get some strawberries. You know they are your favourite.”
“Fine, but then we’re coming back and finishing the chapter in Inferi. And I don’t care if you don’t like the pictures Al.”
“Fine come on I need food.”

“I can’t believe the year’s almost over it’s gone so fast.”
“I can.”
“Merlin soon we’re going to have to start applying for apprenticeships and jobs!”
“Rose, take a deep breath. You’re not behind you can figure that all out during the summer. Yeah don’t worry you’re top of the class you can do anything you want to.”
“Exactly! At least you to know what jobs you want I can’t even choose between plants and animals.”
“maybe you can find a job where you can do both?”
“Well I have plenty of time to look. What about you Al?”
“Did you get a summer placement at St Mungo’s? I know you applied in January.”
“Err, I’m not doing one.”
“What who could possibly be a better option than you?”
“I don’t know someone who wants to be a healer?”
“Al you’ve wanted to be a healer since you were six!”
“I know but that fortnight when you were both six and I couldn’t do anything. And I was constantly exhausted. I could barely think how to get to bed at the end of a shift and the healers there were getting off shit then straight away doing research on what it could possibly be. I was so scared of hurting someone.”
“But you didn’t you were great.”
“thanks Rose but I wasn’t if you guys hadn’t woken when you did, I think I would have broken down. I just it was too much I don’t think I have the right aptitude for being a healer.”
“Fuck man. Have you talked with anyone about it?”
“Yeah, I became friends with Annabel Warren, one of the healers who came to help. I’ve talked about it with Madam Pomfery and Rachel about it too, and I’ve realised that I’m not the right fit for being a healer.”
“So, you’re sure that it’s not the right path then? Have you told your family?”
“Only you guys so far.”
“Do you know what you want to do instead then?”
“No clue but I’ve got a year to figure it out.”
“Maybe you could do something with charms, you’ve always been good at that?” Rose suggests, I think she’s diverted her nervous energy about the exams into being worried about Al’s future.
“Rose! Please, can you just drop it? I’m going to look into it during the summer and that’s the end of it.”
“But what if you figure out what you want to do and you’ve taken the wrong subjects? You might have to re-sit the year!”
“Merlin’s pants its April Rose and we’re half way through our exams there’s no point in dwelling on it.”
“No! Rose it’s my life drop it. And anyway, it’s not like I’m taking divination they are all core subjects.”
“Rose, it’s Al’s decision. Leave him be. If he wants to focus on his exams and figure it out after then that’s ok.” I say softly
“Fine, I’ll drop it but I think you’re an idiot for not looking into it.”

“And now for the weather.” I’m currently collapsed on the sofa in the common room, listening to the radio for the weather report. Hopefully there’s going to be a break in this heat. What it’s going to be like in July I don’t know, but I know it will be hell.
“Good evening, tonight is another clear night for most of the country, with highs of 15 degrees Celsius in London, 12 in Manchester and 13 in Hogsmeade.” Great it’ll actually be a manageable temperature. Maybe I’ll manage to sleep “Unfortunately, there’s doesn’t seem so be any break in this heatwave coming anytime soon.” Guess I’m melting in my Defence exam then. “In fact, it looks like the temperatures are likely to rise, even further. Tomorrow we can expect the temperature to rise again I’m afraid with highs of 34 degrees in London, 31 in Cardiff, 32 in Cornwall, 27 in Manchester and 29 in Hogsmeade.” Fuck, that is not the news I wanted to hear. “Please remember to drink plenty of fluids and if you are outside to apply some sun cream if you want to avoid sunburn and to wear a hat. Don’t forget it’s not just you who’s suffering in this heat, your owls and cats will be as well so keep them well watered and try to avoid sending long distance letters. Finally, a reminder from the ministry be careful when brewing potions in this heat, make sure you are doing this in a well-ventilated room and that you have a cooling charm in place. There have been a couple of cases of people fainting while brewing their potions, luckily none of the potions exploded but one did apparently come dangerously close. So please be careful.”
“Damn it!” Some fifth-year yells before they radio turns it off. How are we supposed to survive our exams this year I don’t know? Thank Merlin I’m not taking my N.E.W.T.s or O.W.L.s. After that weather report, I’m tempted to go get some ice cream but that would involve moving and there’s no way I’m doing that. Al’s currently off somewhere with Rachel, while Rose said an hour ago that she was going to do a bit more revising. I love her but Godric I can’t look at another text book right now, she’ll probably turn up in the next half hour or so after she’s been kicked out of the Library.
“Ugh! Kill me!” Rose groans collapsing onto the sofa next to me.
“Sorry, I like you too much to do that.” I mutter continuing to read my book. “Why, what’s happened?”
“History of magic, I can’t remember the Druid festivals and what they mean. Or which ones had sacrifices or anything. There are only eight but I’m getting them all jumbled together. Four of them are fairly easy, I mean they’re Christmas and Halloween, and spring and Autumn Equinox are just kind of self-explanatory. but the other four. Ugh they have such weird names! I’ve been on this for 2 hours! I should know them by now.” Wait, Rose has been revising for two hours! No wonder she’s struggling. She has a bad habit of when she can’t remember something refusing to stop revising until she can remember it, when what she really needs to do is take a break. Last year she once skipped all her meals because she couldn’t remember the exact method and quantities of ingredients for a Draught of Peace, she ended up almost fainting walking back to the dorms. Putting my book down and turn to face her.
“Rose, have you taken a break recently.” Rose glances at me guiltily “Rose how many times do I have to say it, if you don’t take a break you won’t learn anything.” Wrapping my arm around her waist I pull her into my side. “You’re not doing any more revising today.”
“No, buts I’m not letting you go.”
“I hate you.”
“I love you too.” I say, pressing a kiss to her hair.
